Actually, how about this: No bonuses, this year, employees making over a certain amount in annual salary including stock options and the like. Make the ceiling high enough that only the highest of the people will get excluded from bonuses (I know a lot of lower-level workers rely on bonuses as part of their salary).

But that's lots of rich people tax money for the government. Otherwise, New York will need a bailout too.

I'm glad to see they came to their senses.

not really, they will offshore it.

It really just shows how out of touch the people at the top of the power structure really are. Renegotiating a contract to guarantee you millions of dollars in severance fees once it becomes clear that the government will come to your rescue is skirting dangerously close to "off with his head" territory. These people don't seem to think that it's possible. It is.

Oh hell no. They better not.

Oh yeah, that's right, in the USA we don't actually "do anything" anymore, so we'll just post on blogs and then go caption some cats.

Well according to Gordon Gecko money is basically transfered from one perception into another, so $20 billion to us regular folk is probably nothing to Wall St.

As long as we think that the 20 billion dollars is a lot of money they'll keep making poor people feel bad that they aren't rich like them.

I thought bonuses were a reward for being successful?

Relying on the gubmint cheese doesn't sound very successful to me, but I suppose that's because I'm a human and not a machine that only cares about red and black.

I want all of those execs brought from their happy slumbers over there on Melody Lane and I want them brought right here, each with a big ribbon on their head, and I want to look them straight in the eye and I want to tell them what cheap, lying, no-good, rotten, four-flushing, low-life, snake-licking, dirt-eating, inbred, overstuffed, ignorant, blood-sucking, dog-kissing, brainless, dickless, hopeless, heartless, fat-assed, bug-eyed, stiff-legged, spotty-lipped, worm-headed sacks of monkey shiat they are. Senescent Dawn: It really just shows how out of touch the people at the top of the power structure really are.

Au contraire.

The ones who are out of touch are those of us who think we live in a fair capitalistic system where the only transfer of wealth is welfare. We're the blind ones, not realizing just how the system is bent to favor these people. Need to save for retirement? These folks will skim a healthy chunk off the top, not just through sales fees but the bid/ask price diff. And if they lose money, a mind-bogglingly enormous bailout.

They just need enough of an illusion that the system is fair and working.

Does anyone still think this mess is entirely the government's fault?

I mean, the argument goes like this: Because the Federal Reserve's policies encourage bad behavior, it's the Federal Reserve's fault that banks indulge in bad behavior.

It's like saying that because guns don't prevent people from shooting themselves in the head, that it's Winchester's fault that their guns are on occasions used in suicides, since they're "encouraging" bad behavior by not preventing bad behavior.

Heh. I am actually quite fond of the directors cut of that movie. The theatrical release version was butchered.
