The smaller, local papers where I live use those news service stories a lot. They're clearly credited which I appreciate, but I don't think most people realize they're basically ads.

The service sells ads in the guise of content. It's effective for the company being pitched and cost effective for the purchaser to fatten the copy content.

I guess it's win/win but it seems a shame that most people don't realize they're commercials. And this particular one is rather douchey.

Talk about improper...wow. These guys have no tact whatsoever.

Not to mention how having a loaded weapon attached to a bed is probably one of the worse ideas I have ever seen. I can imagine someone waking up from a nightmare or in the middle of a dream grabbing the trigger and blowing their feet off...or the family pooch at the foot of the bed.

I have said this before in other "gun nut" threads and got nothing but contempt and scorn. I shall attempt again.

Despite popular belief....shotguns are NOT suitable home defense.
Even with a bedside rack you can not get the weapon up and into battery and in firing position in order to then rack the slide quickly.

An ideal CQB (close quarters battle) weapon is one that can be in your hand and ready to fire in less than one second. A shotgun takes too long and requires both hands and a 12 gauge is EXTREMELY difficult to engage unless you are standing up and in a proper firing position.

Snub nosed revolver is the way to go.
On your back or laying on your side in bed you can have the weapon in your hand and firing in half a second.

I do NOT claim the scattergun as "worthless"
I simply wouldn't rely on it as your first line of defense if you are suddenly and rapidly attacked. An aggressor can be on you too fast. You may not be able to get a long arm into battery in order to bear down on your foe. A snubbie in your hand is nearly impossible to pry away at point blank range.

S&W 2" .38 Special Model 10 loaded with six 158 grain +P wadcutter hollow points is my "home invasion kit"

It sounds like something out of a wacky redneck sitcom.

Their sales pitch is to offer a product that does not secure the weapon from access by an 8-year-old. That is extra fail on top of the inherent stupidity of the device. If you're going to leave a shotgun unlocked in the open, just lean it in the corner.

You're ignoring or discounting the inherently increased accuracy of firing a stocked long gun: longer sight radius, steadier hold. I agree with you on 12-ga. recoil, bird shot is for birds and slugs have quite a kick to them.

I also disagree on the snub-nose, for accuracy reasons.

Posting the FAQs on the beside shotgun for hilarity...

What is The Back-Up©?
The Back-Up is a rack that allows you to keep your shotgun within easy reach. Many people keep their guns on a bed stand, under a bed, in a closet or standing in a corner. However, none of these locations are safe because they do not give you easy access to your defensive tool when you really need it. Protection is effective only when it is readily available and easily used. Our unique patented design gives you quick and easy access to your protective device, while conveniently staying out of the way.

Why would I use The Back-Up© with a shotgun rather than a handgun?
While it is always best to use a weapon that you can handle and you are trained to use, there are several reasons why a shotgun is better than a handgun:

A shotgun is visible and intimidating. You may be able to scare off an intruder without firing a shot.
While a handgun uses merely single bullet, a shotgun has a spread pattern, which makes it easier to hit your target when you are under the stress of a home intrusion.
Shotguns are safer for people in adjoining rooms. If you miss an intruder with a handgun, the bullet will go though the wall. A shotgun, using #4 shot, will stop any intruder but will not penetrate completely through many types of walls.
I already have a shotgun handy. Why not keep it where I have it?
Because you would have to get up and find it, losing valuable time.

Will The Back-Up© scratch or mark my shotgun?
The special Polymer material will not scratch the stock or the barrel of your shotgun. Also, both sides of the gun abut the padding and box spring on one side and the bedding on the other. Therefore there should be no occasion for The Back-Up© to scratch you shotgun.

How do I know The Back-Up© will fit my shotgun?
Our unique patented design is adjustable to any legal size shotgun. The adjustments are easy to make and The Back-Up© brackets can be adjusted from 15 inches to 24 inches to provide a custom fit to your device.

I sleep on the right side of the bed. Can I use it there?
Because of our unique patented design, you can adjust to fit The Back-Up© on either side of the bed, placing it where it is most convenient for you. In fact, we suggest you have The Back-Up© on both sides of the bed.

I travel a lot for business or hunting. Is The Back-Up© portable?
Yes The Back-Up© is very light and portable. The unique patented design and construction gives you the ability to collapse it easily for travel, and place it wherever you need it.

Children visit regularly. What should I do?
It is never wise to keep a loaded weapon close to children. Unload your shotgun, put it away and lock it up.

AnthraxRipple: I also disagree on the snub-nose, for accuracy reasons.

You're incorrectly assuming that people who own guns actually know how to shoot, and have good aim.

The vast majority of folks who have them, the gun is a magical totem, whose mere presence creates a bubble of security in a 20 foot radius. There's no actual thought of using it, because there's no need. The bubble will protect them.

Can't the bad guys see it? Are they so foolish as to test it? Everyone knows that entering the bubble causes dire consequences for those with bad intentions, such as instant appearance of authority figures such as the police, or instant death upon the merest touch of the trigger.

Target practice? Safety instruction? Why? I'm not a moron- I can clearly see the magical powers the gun holds.
