Are there any persistent online games that don't require such a huge investment in time? It seems like every one I've looked at requires way too much time to be worth it fun-wise as the casual gamer just ends up getting stomped by someone who seemingly has nothing to do other than play the game.

don't play on a PVP server, problem solved.

I play it somewhat often, but pretty much only with old friends who live distantly. In this regard its an excellent from of socialization.

(3) In any event, WoW is the most popular MMO that has ever existed. There is not a single other MMO that can claim even a million subscriptions, let alone users.

This smells of bullshiat, considering Warhammer Online made 750,000 by it's 1 month mark.

I is a complete waste of time. Me and my wife play, raid 2 nights a week, but don't have kids and are in school. It cuts into our time, but sometimes i think about my parents who spend about 5-6 hours a day watching television after work. At least I can watch TV while playing WoW. Its cheaper than a lot of forms of entertainment (two movie tickets are over 15 dollars) but to each person his/her own. It does cut into my social life, but I can hang out with friends I know in real life, but without driving hours upon hours to see them. Even after all that i still get down to the game store to play warhammer once a week. Yeah, Ive always been a nerd.

As for sex in WoW:

A few months ago a friend of mine asked me to take her to the airport for a flight she was taking. She said she was flying out to visit a cousin that she hadn't seen in a long time and to meet with the leader from her WoW guild to get to talk about some in-guild function they were arranging. She said her boyfriend couldn't take her since he was working. So I picked her up at work, took her to Newark airport and didn't think much of her trip. She was kind enough to pay for gas for the hour drive.

About 2 months after she returned, she and her boyfriend got in a huge argument, apparently about her taking webcam pictures of herself nekkid. In the course of the argument she revealed she hadn't flown away to see her cousin at all. There was no cousin there. There was only the guild leader she saw...for the cheating booty call.

"My husband plays this stupid game while our children mix poisons together in the garage and I work 3 jobs. Also I'm pregnant."

"You guys just need to learn about balance. I raid 8 times a week but I'm still a successful medical resident and I build a treehouse for my kids every night and also cook dinner and do the laundry."

Is that about right?

you forgot "why don't you get a real sword and fight real monsters instead of pretending to in a stupid game" or something like that.

Oh, and around Nov 13, there will be a LOT of cancellations on the Warhammer side.

Why? WAR has superior PvP, WoW has superior PvE. 'Nuff said.

I cancelled my WoW account soon after my wife was pregnant with our first child.

I know I couldn't handle the time investment in WoW & really be there for my daughter, but I'm not everybody & everybody shouldn't be me.

Yeah, a big mea cupla. I was doing it from memory and I was wrong and forgot about a lot of the older games. Lineage is the only other one to have more than a million paid subscribes. Runescape has more than a million members but most of those are not paid.

Here is the complete list:

Somewhat related, I bought Guild Wars today and might switch over to it from WoW. WoW is ok, but once I got to the part where I pretty much had to raid, I got turned off (there is no way in hell I'm spending upwards of 2 hours or more in a raid). I read that in Guild Wars there is little in the way of raiding and more focus on story in the PvE game and more intense PvP on the PvP side with less time needed at a stretch for both. At least that's what I hope.

Anyone here play Guild Wars and can give me some tips/advice?

It's very casual & digestible in one-sitting increments compared to WoW... like half an hour to do a Mission instance in GW, and sometimes much less if you're going for the Master's level completion bonus. If you have kids or real life demands, this is a good thing.

With Henchmen (NPC party members) & Heros (customizable NPC party members), you almost don't need other human players around... so it can be a super casual game.

Raiding is non-existent because party size is limited to 8, as I recall... haven't played in a while.

PvP is far more player-skill-based than gear-based like WoW, but to get the best character skills, you have to be pretty decent at PvE.

GW is not the same kind of game as WoW, but it can give you enough of a fix if you like online gaming.

Finding a good guild is important for PvP, but not so necessary for PvE... but like all online games, guilds do matter if you want human interaction beyond WTF N00B U SUCK & the random shiat like Barrens Chat.

Oh, and if I never have played GW before, then I'd start with Prophecies (the original). You unlock a lot of "free" skills without having to pay for them like the other installments... and buying crap skills can get expensive if you don't know what skills fit your builds (respecs are FREE in GW, unlike WoW, so experiment the shiat out of your d00dz when you're solo).

Oh... and when it comes to Mission instances, don't worry about being super-duper leveled to do them. They aren't tough in the way that WoW instances have Elite monsters in them. The GW Mission instances advance the story line, and you tend to want to do them much sooner than you'd attempt instances in WoW.

As a cosplaying, hyper-manic homemaking supermodel with a 4.0 GPA, 70+ hour work-week and bunches of level 70 characters, I'm getting a kick out of that.

zombie invasion is over. Sorry you didn't have fun with it like a lot of people did. It's a one time event but it's over now.

And to be fair the 20 masks thing will no longer be a requirement for the Hallowed title (in the next patch.)

They did at least finally give Prot Warriors some viability in PVP...

I hope so because in the hours that I have played during hallow's end I only have 3 of the 20 available, but all of the other prereq's complete for the title.
