And it's populated entirely by dudes like this:

www.teampandemic.net

I'm pretty sure the residents of the Tuvalu could take 'em.

It may have 11 million accounts but that does not mean it has 11 million unique users.

Heck, one guy alone has 36 accounts for himself, and I know many others who have 2-3 accounts for multiboxing.

Not to mention it sucks

But how does it factor in on GDP and land mass?

Eldre'thalas server has to have 400,000 accounts for only 100,000 ppl--or whatever hyperbolic figure you want to use. It seems like I'm the only one with a single account, whereas everyone else has at least two accounts. It's insane.

Ok let's see if I can get these out of the way:

"I quit X long ago and my life is so much better now, I do all sorts of successful and fulfilling X. I can't believe I wasted so much of my life on it."

"70 Mage, 70 Warrior, 70 Hunter, 70 Warlock, 63 Paladin on Hellscream. For the Horde!"

"My husband plays this stupid game while our children mix poisons together in the garage and I work 3 jobs. Also I'm pregnant."

"You guys just need to learn about balance. I raid 8 times a week but I'm still a successful medical resident and I build a treehouse for my kids every night and also cook dinner and do the laundry."

Is that about right?

I wonder how much that number will vary if you deduct all the trial account users

11 million x $15 month = $1.98B a year.

Not too shoddy there Blizzard.

Wow. I mean I enjoyed it for a time. But its just way too time consuming. while I cant hate on people for playing it, I just dont think its possible to be really good at wow and have a reasonable social life. I played a bit in college, and the onyl reason I was able to have a social life is because I split a character with my friend, and even that was farking time consuming. Anyways, I got pretty sick of it once I hit 60. Didnt have a good guild. Didnt know how to find a good guild, and didnt care to be depended on to play a certain number of hours per week. To each his own, but dont try and convince me that you are really good at wow, and it doesnt affect your social life. And playing wow does not equal a social life no matte rhow hard you try.

(1) Blizzard does not count trial subscriptions in its user numbers. It does count users who are on their "free month" from having bought the game.

(2) Blizzard does count subscriptions and not users. It's debatable as to how many unique users they have. Blizzard won't say. It certainly is a few million less than the number they give out, but no one knows for sure.

(3) In any event, WoW is the most popular MMO that has ever existed. There is not a single other MMO that can claim even a million subscriptions, let alone users.

you're supposed to be good at it? it's like saying you're good at diablo, we're talking about a hack and slash not a flight sim. What qualifies as good at it?

I actually continued to pay that $15/month for about 18 months after I stopped playing, because I was convinced that I'd come back some day.

You guys DO realize that World of Warcraft is a computer game, and not a country, right? I mean it's one thing to say "WoW has as many unique users as the world's 75th largest country, but a correlation in population does not make it a sovereign nation.

//I play EQ2 anyways.

For the horde!

2008-10-28 05:15:55 PM
Minor fail on the "75th largest country" thing:

1 - World 6,706,993,152
2 - China 1,330,044,544
3 - India 1,147,995,904
4 - European Union 491,018,683
5 - United States 303,824,640
6 - Indonesia 237,512,352
7 - Brazil 196,342,592
...
17 - Germany 82,369,552
...
23 - France 64,057,792
24 - United Kingdom 60,943,912
25 - Italy 58,145,320
...
75 - Zimbabwe 11,350,111
76 - Greece 10,722,816

I know it's ticky-tacky, but if the European Union is a country, then Germany, UK, Italy, the rest of those weirdos can't be individual countries too, in the "most populated country" list.

They got rid of "World", (which is why it's 75 instead of 76), but they should have either discounted EU or the european countries in between.

There are three accounts in my household, one of them is supposed to be my daughter's, but I've pretty much taken it over. My sister and brother-in-law also play and we spend many friday / saturday nights after the kids are asleep dungeon diving as a group.

My parents used to play cards most weekends with their friends. We play WoW.

LOL...there were HUNDREDS of those posts.

The event was fun except for the fact that Blizz turned the entire game over to the rotten punks for almost a week. I did have a lot of fun pissing them off by sniping them from the bank rooftop in Ratchet.

nerdrage is funny. I got called every name n the book...and a few that hadn't been invented yet.

Cards with friends is no different than WoW with friends, that's my point. Except that when we're playing wow, we're playing cooperatively and we get to "accomplish" things as a group. It's fun - a lot of fun.

/Perhaps I should mention that we're all usually in the same room, around the dining room table with snacks and good company...

Can you enjoy WoW if you don't care about gameplay? Like, is it a decent medium through which to meet local people, sell or buy stuff, or find real-life activities? That's about the only reason I could see myself joining, if it were like a more dynamic craigslist.

I don't want to "accomplish" things with my friends. I want to stomp the shiat out of them and take their money, all while laughing, drinking beer and anteing up to do it again.

Don't get me wrong, I think WoW is a great game. But it's Busch League compared to weekly card games with friends.

r u serious? If so, I'd say no. You can find those elements too, and often will. But if you don't care about contributing to others' effort in-game, then there's little chance noone will care about you. If you like the gameplay, you get the rest as a bonus.

You can have both. I enjoy WoW, so do some of my friends and none of us fit into the category you refer to. That's not to say there aren't lots of them, but you'll find all walks of life in there.

My sister has a 1 yr old and a 4 yr old. I have older kids and we usually go to their house, put on a movie for my kids and let them crash on the sofas until we eventually wind up around 2am. We've gone later a time or two, and ended earlier also, but my sister who is the one who's going to have to be up with the 1 yr old the next morning is usually willing to keep going because she's getting her adult interaction time.

The truth is that when you have little kids, getting out of the house is very expensive impractical. Baby sitters are hard to come by!
