hershmire: cmunic8r99: it's Daylight Saving Time.

/couldn't help myself

Came in here to say that. Grammar nazis unite!

Actually, nazi is not a proper name for a grammar enthusiast. It's an informal contraction of Nationalsozialistische. It doesn't make sense to call someone a National Socialist Grammarian. Even if it did make sense, however, it would be proper to capitalize Nazi. Whee!

/Sorry.

Hmm....4000 clocks, 2 people, 2 days...If they spent 16 hours a day for those two days doing nothing but winding clocks, they would still have to changing more than one clock per minute per person to get it all done...

2008-10-27 01:12:38 AM
Those clocks look pretty old. Doesn't she have to wind most of them almost every day anyway?

Meh, we have the same daylight savings time: That means no, we don't use it.

DST is such a stupid mind fark. Midnight and noon actually have astronomical meanings, you know, except when DST is in effect. I think DST is wrong, not just that it disconnects you from the changing of the seasons, and by extension, nature, it's a huge confusion causing waste. What's wrong with changing your schedule, if necessary, to reflect the changing of the seasons? DST is just a big stupid game.

I never understood why some people like to collect stuff, especially something ridiculous like this. What a waste of time and money.

Portable clocks with widespread. More breaking news: pulling batteries out of clocks at clock store does not actually stop time.

I didn't read this whole thread, so I don't know if it has been said, but wait till she has to change the batteries. I'd think that'd be more of a pain.

You may have noticed that March of this year was particularly hot. As a matter of fact, I understand that it was the hottest March since the beginning of the last century. All of the trees were fully leafed out and legions of bugs and snakes were crawling around during a time in Arkansas when, on a normal year, we might see a snowflake or two.

This should come as no surprise to any reasonable person. As you know, Daylight Saving Time started almost a month early last year. You would think that members of Congress would have considered the warming effect that an extra hour of daylight would have on our climate. Or did they?

Perhaps this is another plot by a liberal Congress to make us believe that global warming is a real threat. Perhaps next time there should be serious studies performed before Congress passes laws with such far-reaching effects.

What a waste of time (changing the clocks).

The biggest waste is the time and money spent in companies checking the old change didn't take effect on servers (this past weekend), and doing it again the next.

Mind_Field: In cases like this, I can't help but ask myself, "Was Monty Python's Flying Circus a comedy series, or a documentary?"

That's funny. When I moved back to Cali from Houston, some of my friends commented that they thought King of The Hill was funny. I had the same response, "It's not funny. It's a documentary and it should be showing on the Discovery Channel".

I've long wondered if people who collect things really have a mental illness, say, OCD, and just use their collection to justify it. This lady fits my theory to my satisfaction.

Cerebral Ballsy: I've long wondered if people who collect things really have a mental illness, say, OCD, and just use their collection to justify it. This lady fits my theory to my satisfaction.

Well, no, some of us are cultural historians, that's all. I've been collecting music (not records) since the age of 11, and I've always made an effort to share my collection with others. When I say, "not records," that's because the sounds are what matters, not the medium that preserves them.

Eventually, all this collecting turned into the MySpace page "Pilsner's Picks," which is reachable through my Fark profile.

Why not collect clocks? Some timepieces are really beautiful, both as works of art and of engineering. I wouldn't make that claim for some of the clocks in this lady's collection, though.

I own one collector clock, which was given to me as a gift. It's the standard clock from a 1960's Russian (U.S.S.R.) submarine. Oddly enough, it's a wind-up. I don't wind it up because it ticks very loudly, I just keep it in my living room as a display piece.

Hey, so this is completely related to what I did yesterday*. I went to work this morning and apologized to the boss about getting to work late. She then proceeds to tell me that today is the change of the hour, and I'm actually about 20 minutes early. Glad that's all that happened though. The whole DST thing probably keeps the woman's collection from going even more overboard, as she actually touches them twice a year.

/From AZ (standard always), working in Mexico (Changed to standard yesterday*)

I don't know how many of those 4000 clocks are wind-ups, but I'd reckon that a lot of them are also battery-powered.

How much money per year do you suppose she spends just on batteries alone?

Personally, I'd get carpal tunnel just from winding a few dozen of 'em.

/ Mother-in-law doesn't change some of her clocks.
// She lets them be off by an hour for a half year.
// If I was in that house in the pic, I'd sneak in and set the alarm on all those clocks on that table behind her.
