All 18YO citizens should register for SS, male or female.

Equality means equal.

When ditsy bowheads have to register with selective service, we will end the draft -- or send these barbies to molten death.

I'm of two minds. Part of me, that believes in equality, says "Hell yeah, it's about time."

But most of me seems to be an atavism, and believes that dying is a man's job.

Make of that what you will.

Fixed.

No, no. Going back to Afghanistan would be naive, and akin to snatching defeat from the jaws of victory. John McCain told me so.

How does Barack wanting to decrease funding to our armed forces equate to him wanting to beef up our military. In his own words he has stated that he wants to slow advancements.

IMHO, a society can be judged in part on how they treat women.

Forcing them into the armed services and placing them in situations where they are physically overmatched is just sad.

If they choose to be there, fine. But mandating their participation on the basis of equality is essentially denying the femininity of the female and all the priviliges they should be afforded.

The relevant section of TFA:

Obama: Opposes a draft but supports having women register with the Selective Service. "I think that if women are registered for service - not necessarily in combat roles, and I don't agree with the draft - I think it will help to send a message to my two daughters that they've got obligations to this great country as well as boys do," he said. Supports a large national service volunteer program that he says could have spillover effects on encouraging people to enlist. Obama says stop-loss policies amount to a "back-door" draft and opposes its use.

Can't disagree with this. Women in combat is a larger and more theoretical issue that isn't to be decided by a CiC, but equality means equality, and SS registration shouldn't have a gender bias any more than any other federal right or responsibility.

Well, it doesn't change my vote. It makes me want to vote twice for the man. I'm glad I never got called, but I accepted the responsibility. Time to earn your keep, ladies.

well, why shouldn't women be required to sign up for selective service if men have to? i've never understood that. women need to be required if men do........or else nobody does.

Physically overmatched? I didn't realize there was so much hand-to-hand combat going on. Also, it's "privileges."

I agree with it, I'm just shocked this has gone under the radar. I would think the Dems would want to do away with selective service, not broaden it.

Possibly by not spending $200-300 Billion on operational costs in places like Iraq.

Johnny Savage: IMHO, a society can be judged in part on how they treat women.

Which societies tell women that they can not be all they can be?

What next, women are too delicate to worry their pretty, empty heads on things like voting, choosing their own mate, choosing whether and when to have a child, choosing to stay employed after marriage, choosing to become a welder or a doctor instead of a womb or a prostitute?

Or too delicate to drive a car without male presence? or drive at all?

Equal society will always have it over inequal societies. America learned to deal with blacks being in the same units as whites (who had no problems with latinos). America can learn to deal with women being expected to carry their weight on equal terms in all ways instead of only some.

On a related note...

Swing State Virginia Tosses Military Ballots, Allows Nonresidents to Vote

This year's election mischief is not limited to the fraud perpetrated by Obama's old ACORN friends. Swing state Virginia has been finding lame excuses to toss out military ballots, even as it allows nonresident college students to vote there.

The military votes are getting tossed in plush Fairfax County, where supervisor Gerry Connolly is running for Congress as a liberal Democrat. I wonder why he would want to disenfranchise our troops.

As if to replace the military voters who will not be allowed a say in the election, bureaucrats have visited Fairfax County jail to encourage criminals to vote.

yeah I agree with Obama's stances more so than McCain. The Nat'l Guard chief should sit at the table with the big boys especially seeing how much more expanded it's role has become over the last few years. Veteran's care should take into account non military related injuries as well as allow for family care. I like McCain's card idea as it would allow vets to use a closer non-VA hospital.

On paper and overall Obama's stances seem to be a bit more fair and better overall for the military, at least in regards to the common enlisted guy or gal. In practice who knows but let's hope that at least some of this stuff does get implemented.
