Cambridge city council is ready to ban hockey nets from being left along sidewalks in front of homes.

Portable basketball nets and skateboard ramps would also be banned under a new city boulevard bylaw.

Good idea...we all know how bad sports are for kids. Let get them hanging out and drinking beer as soon as possible and keep our boulevards beautiful.

Excellent! Now there's NO excuse for getting kids' fat arses off the couch. Good plan, eh!

2008-10-24 01:08:38 AM
Is it an issue of the kids playing in the streets, or leaving their shiat in the streets after they're finished?

News: City doesn't want hockey nets left in front of houses. Fark: In Canada

I think most cities in the civilized world would prefer not to have hockey nets left willy-nilly amongst the neighborhoods. What's significant that this is about Canada?

Wow.. my hometown on Fark.. Glad I don't live there anymore.

Idiots don't have anything better to do than to biatch about this. It was never as bad as they say in the article.

Welcome to Soviet Socialist Ontario. Land of Red-Tape and regulations.

" The bylaw grew out of few cases in recent years of people growing corn on the boulevards along the street curbs. The city had no clear-cut rules to deal with the vegetation.

Corn would be banned under the new rules, which specifically prohibits growing vegetables or grains.

Plants must be shorter than 45 centremetres, except for grass, which must be no taller than 20 centimetres."

Sounds like someone has waaaaay too much time on their hands. The citizens and the city...

Wow. I don't know what to say. We MUST truck in our vegetables from far away in order to keep the neighbourhood beautiful? I could understand banning big plants within a metre of two of the sidewalk or road, but banning growing your own vegetables completely? Part of me will be happy to see this twisted system we have built crumble and collapse someday.

They pretty much go together. Anyone with kids knows they just can't clean up after themselves. Deal with it, grownups, and post the get off my lawn signs.

Epsilon: What's significant that this is about Canada?

Let's put it this way... for the past several years, there has been a competition amongst municipalities to name one town or city Canada's 'Hockeyville'. One town near where I live shut down the main street through town - blocked at each end by an RCMP cruiser, lights flashing - so that a bunch of kids could play street hockey for an hour or two. There aren't many Canadians who don't know what the cry "CAR!" means, in the middle of a pick-up game...

The issue doesn't even seem to be about blocking the sidewalks - more about the perception of 'unsightly clutter'. City council needs to rinse the sand out.

I'm glad to see that Cambridge ex-pats are well represented on fark. I grew up there, my only goal was to leave once I finished high school.

There is a bit ao a back story that was not in the article. Some moran was growing corn on the boulivard, on a corner lot. It was considered unsafe but there was no by-law against it. Now they've come up with this doozy.

If I were a kid there now, I would have left my net out front as a form of protest.

/CAR!

Pope Larry II:

There are kids on my street that most of the time don't even move their net off the road for a car. We're two blocks from an elementary school with a paved lot they could play on if they didn't want to be interrupted, but they're too lazy to even move the damned thing off the road.

What I figure? You're allowed to leave it out, or leave it on the street. But I'm allowed to run it over or steal it. They don't make those things out of metal anymore, kids.

Also, define "boulevard" - I've heard like nine different meanings for it.

Actually I think what they are talking about is all technically city land, the little space of green lawn between the sidewalk and the street. People apparently have been treating it like their own property, which it isn't. You can greow what you want on your property, but not city property.
