You start dressing him up, hire a dog pyschiatrist and just basically treat him like a really hairy kid.

Ah, OK. I almost ran over one of those things with a cart full of lumber at Home Depot on the weekend. Why someone takes a 12oz dog in a sweater on a 16 foot leash to a hardware store is beyond me.

Yea, seriously. Whenever I take my chihuahua to Lowe's I always make sure that he stays in his purse.

That's true. My cats have always assured me that dogs are subhuman. Only higher beings should be allowed to sleep on the bed with their own pillows and have a plate marked "Kitty" at the table.

Way to take the fun out of owning a dog.

Yeah, I got Baxter so I could assert myself as pack leader. And when this inferior, subordinate canine performs within my parameters, then and only then will he receive a modicum of affection.

Expert? Alert me when they speak to someone other than Cesar Milan.

2008-10-22 10:01:45 PM
True enough, but I wish he wouldn't use Cesar Milan to back up his argument. That jackass does more terrifying dogs into doing his will than actual useful training. Friend of mine at U-Florida's veterinary school took a behaviour class where the professor spent two entire lectures on all the things wrongly stated in that Dog Whisperer show... Yet, people seem to venerate him just because he's on TV.Ugh.

2008-10-22 10:02:16 PM
I personally find that Cesar Milan's philosophy of "exercise, discipline, affection" to be incredibly obvious, yet rarely practiced.

My wife and I love our dog, sure. Do we give him tons of affection? Yes. We also humanize him to each other, mainly in a joking way that amuses both of us. We also realize that he his still a DOG, which is basically a domesticated wolf. He also walks at least four miles a day an gets disciplined (rarely, because he very rarely misbehaves). If you exercise and discipline your dog properly, then you can give them all the affection in the world and not have much of a problem.

/affection does not mean dressing your dog up and painting its nails
//it also does not mean passing one your neurosis to the dog and then expecting them to deal with it like a human
///my soap box, I'll get off now

Jakevol2: What is the worst that can happen by treating my dog like a person? Seriously what is so wrong with treating my dog with love and respect?

Treating your dog with love and respect is one thing. Allowing it to do whatever it wants, whenever it wants, and completely run your life is another.

I work with animals every day, and it just amazes me how many people have absolutely no control over their own dogs, and even are afraid of them. They just can't bring themselves to teach their dogs to sit, or come when called, or walk on a leash without dragging them all over the place. Why? Because they wouldn't want to offend their precious "baby" by actually asking them to do something. Then when their dog bites people, or tears up their house and furniture, or runs off into the street to get run over, they wonder why??

Dogs need rules.

One reason I prefer cats. It doesn't matter if you baby them or just take care of their basic needs. They still look at you like you're their servant.

I agree that people should not humanize their pets, but I wouldn't follow Cesar Milan's advice on dogs. He is a control freak with "little man" issues.

I have dog, I love dog. I provide the best of care for dog. However, dog is animal.
Dog lives outside. Dog eats dog food. Dog sleeps in dog house.

A couple of years ago I was dining at in-law's house for thanksgiving. A dog was UNDER THE TABLE licking my feet and running its nose around the rim of the table. THANKSGIVING DINNER FOR DOGSAKE.

I understand if you want to treat your dog like a person, but PLEASE don't expect everyone else to feel the same way.

So true, I've seen people try to train their dogs like it was a kid that spoke english like they could sweet talk it. The dog does not know what words you are saying 99.9% of the time, only how you act and if it doesn't think you are in charge it will do what it wants because why should it give a damn about some big quietly mumbling creature that drops food all the time.
