Yeah, pretty much this. As a financial consultant I did this all the time, as do CFPs and accountants.

Avoiding paying taxes unnecessarily is perfectly legit. There's a whole bunch of little ways to do it; income splitting, spousal claims (eg, the highest-earning spouse claims the deductions, even if it was the lesser-earning spouse entitled to them, such as a husband claiming tax breaks when his wife returns to school).

There's nothing illegal about minimizing your liabilities so long as it's an on-the-books method. Bank accounts in Lichtenstein not withstanding.
