Why is this Ironic? Al Gore is from Tennessee, which is close to Mississippi, and he invented the Internet. ; )

I have obtained a picture of the computers they placed in every classroom:

"We done put dem 'puters in all a da rooms, but nobody done told us dat you be needin' the 'lectricity in da room too. We gonna buy up dem Duracells and shove em in da 'puters to make em work now."
2003-01-02 04:18:26 PM
Well sure, when you only have four classrooms, it's easy.
2003-01-02 04:18:28 PM
sure the computers are there, but do they know how to use them?

In related news, "New poll shows that Mississippi has the highest student to dead kitten ratio in the country."
2003-01-02 04:22:30 PM
Wasn't there a study recently that suggested that computers in classrooms were actually a hinderance to a student's education?

That would not bode well for Mississippi.

Wrong, dude! Next on the list: electricity.

I'm sure this will result in a complete turnaround in the state's educational rankings. We all know that having a computer makes children smarter. It has nothing to do with society or other skills in the classroom.

I believe Mississippi is still 50th in the nation in education.
2003-01-02 04:26:21 PM
I say there, let me be the first to pose some sort of humorous comment alluding to the low breeding, lack of education, and general backwardness of the citizens of the state of Mississippi!

Wait.. blast! I've been usurped!

Yeah Gelatinous basically stated what was on a lot of our minds. I really do wonder how long it will be before teh pr0n becomes a problem in that school.

while the sarcastic responses crack me up (alas, i cannot be in this post as my initial thoughts have been iterated), i think the article speaks also of a slightly sad movement afoot in educational america. we have such a blind trust in some sort of inherent academic value in being 'wired' that we're forsaking good old-fashioned RRR.

like putting the cart before the horse.

don't get me wrong, a wired classroom has the potential to be an ever more enriching environment. i guess something has to be popular before considered valuable. you know, like liberty x. or something.

but man, i miss broadband... (is in Ireland)

/crazy rant

These kids don't need computers. A central computer lab might be useful, but school systems don't need to waste good money that could be buying books for the libraries, repairing leaky roofs or paying underpaid teachers more on computers that are only going to be used to download mp3's, view pr0n and enter chatrooms.

Wow, isn't this fun. Let's make fun of Mississippi. At least the Nebraska people have to stay quiet after Eli Manning took them behind the woodshed.

Not to mention I would rather live in Mississippi than any of those states whose names end in consonants.
2003-01-02 04:32:23 PM
Mississippi isn't quite as backwards as a lot of people thing.

Montgomery Ward is out of business, and Sears hasn't put out a full catalog in a number of years, so most places have put in indoor commodes....

I believe Mississippi is still 50th in the nation in education.

Out of how many?

I have a sister who is constantly complaining about the lack of eligible men. So in humourous disgust, I set up a web site advertising her availability to the world.

I shall call it ...!

Aw, thank God! Now, let's talk rust-proofing.

"At least the Nebraska people have to stay quiet after Eli Manning took them behind the woodshed."

Aren't there some good MAC teams that deserve a bowlgame more than a bunch of .500 also-rans from a major conference?

CruJones has the right spirit here. Who needs proper educational values when your 6-6 football team beat the Huskers during a down year? ;)
