The file containing names, Social Security numbers and dates of birth of people charged with minor offenses in 2006 and 2007 was on the Web site for 11 days before it was taken down Oct. 9.

Lawsuit!

Interim city chief information officer Kevin Ortell blames human error for the posting.

Wow! Kevin's a CIO and a rocket scientist!

The city is sending letters to those affected, along with information about how to protect themselves from identity theft.

STEP 1: Don't let the city post your personal information on their website!

Isn't the law that you have to prove someone actually got your info misused before you can sue the people that accidently made it available?

Right, because we all know that only people with bad credit smoke pot and drink alcohol.

But how do you accidentally post information to a website? Is there simply a choice between two buttons, one marked "encrypt in private storage" and the other "post to website" and then it all just happens?

If so, they need to move those buttons farther apart. And maybe while they're at it remove the command, "Bypass all security measures", that one always causes problems in the future.

I live in IN and if the state is working at it's finest potential, those people can expect to get notification in about 9 months to a year. It's just one big **FARKING** quagmire. I really don't know why I stay here. Mebbe I'm afraid the next state I move to will be worse??

I just moved to Connecticut from IN where I grew up. Things seem to go faster here, but don't expect ANYTHING to be free. It cost about $120 just to get a CT driver's license.
