Oh Joe the Plumber, will your zany antics ever end?

I feel sorry for this guy. McCain tried to turn him into a prop, and it failed, and now the guy's gonna continue to get shredded even though there's really no point to any of it. I'd be pretty angry at the McCain campaign if I was him. Of course, I'd also have the sense to keep my mouth shut and not do any further interviews just to see my face on the TV, so maybe that's all moot.

Ahh, the third rail of American politics: Most Americans, from your average everyday vampire hunter to your hard working blue-collar types, are tax-dodging jerks.

Of course, the moral of the story here is, if you're going to get involved in talking about taxes for a candidate, PAY YOUR FARKING TAXES!

It really isn't hard.

Man, I am really ambivalent about this. I feel bad for him because of all the attention he's getting, but I also think it's all really, really funny. I don't really follow celebrity gossip, so I guess this is feeding that base part of me.

Not necessarily. I'd charge 10,000 per interview. Then I could afford to pay my back taxes.

I'm sure now that he's McCain's "buddy" this will all be taken care of it. It's the least he can do 00 he must have mentioned that guy 20 times last night.

Owing the IRS is as good a reason to want lower taxes as any.

So Joe's name is Sam?

And he lives in Toledo and not Holland as reported earlier?

How do we know this isn't some judgment against someone with the same last name?

There are weird "villages" and "towns" and "cities" around those parts. Basically, Holland is Toledo.

Holland, Ohio, located near the western area of Toledo... (new window)

Normally, I would guess the McCain campaign thoroughly checked Joe out and obtained Joe's permission before using him like a rag doll in the debate. But this is the McCain campaign we're talking about.

Joe approached Obama and challenged him, which I think is farking awesome, any of us should be able to do that, to any of the candidates, without giving up our privacy, and I would be pretty disgusted to have someone like that dragged through the political shiatstorm. Unfortunately, though, Joe took the bait and talked to FoxNews and FamilySecurityMatters.com and so on; he walked right into the shiatstorm, poor guy.

Unlike Rev. Jeremiah Wright, Bill Ayers, Ayers' wife, Levi Johnston and others who never sought to be part of the campaign.

So true, I work in MN, but I live across the River in North Dakota so I only have to pay a fraction of the income taxes that I would if I lived in MN.

Most of us also probably make questionable deductions as well and pad some of our figures on the forms. It's like our weight, we all lie about it.

BuckTurgidson: Joe approached Obama and challenged him, which I think is farking awesome, any of us should be able to do that, to any of the candidates

Last time Sarah Palin had that happen, the McCain campaign went into more contortions than Cirque du Soleil trying to claim that it was a "gotcha" move, and we should ignore her direct contradiction of McCain's "to the gates of hell but just short of the Pakistan border" policy on finding Osama bin Laden.

She isn't going to let it happen again.

Obama: still answering questions.

I can't feel all that sorry for him--I just don't think that he "happened" to be on that street by coincidence, at least as a relative to Charles Keating. And knowing his own history, he chose to be used, possibly for some nice perks. Maybe like being able to afford to get his license back, so he could get his own business up and running.

Maybe four years ago, this would have been a great way to mug a candidate. But, we've got a much less captive media, and a much more connected and energized base, who are willing to track things down.

You do know that McCain is going to keep a hate on for Katie Couric for the rest of his natural days though. And probably Joe as well.

Plus he lied. He sold himself as someone who is right on the 250K line, when in reality he is in the 100K and would actually be getting a tax break from Obama.

He was playing Devil's Advocate. And he's sticking to it. Possibly to get enough cash to clear up that tax mess and maybe get his license back...

the_pgoat: Also, it appears that he is indeed registered to vote.

Questions were being raised Thursday morning whether Mr. Wurzelbacher is a registered voter.

Linda Howe, executive director of the Lucas County Board of Elections, said a Samuel Joseph Worzelbacher, whose address and age match Joe the Plumber's, registered in Lucas County on Sept. 10, 1992. He voted in his first primary on March 4, 2008, registering as a Republican.

Ms. Howe said that the name may be misspelled in the database. (new window)

That misspelling may be enough to get him purged from the voter rolls if the Ohio Republican Party has anything to say about it.

I'll defend that. That is a technicality, which people may use, but it's all legal. There are no tax laws saying you have to pay state taxes if you spend most of your workday in a state. It's the advantage of living on a border. And while you take advantage of some services brought to you by Minnesota, you're also excluded from claiming residency, which bars you from a whole host of state services.

This guy flat-out owes $1200. If he can afford to buy his business, he can afford this. And, if he claims, "oops I forgot" like McCain has concerning his backtaxes on his properties, then guess what, he's either:

A) irresponsible
B) an idiot who doesn't know taxes are paid every year (or quarter) and shouldn't be running any business
C) has so many assets, this one slipped through

It could be A and B at the same time, which means Obama blocking him from buying his business is a net gain for the economy. If it's C then he's not average. He just happens to be named "Joseph."
