I was expecting (hoping for) vandalism, but supposedly it's an accident. Actually, I'm even more surprised there hasn't been backlash against a Citgo sign, but then again, Massachussetts.

Does it do as well at "Roll over!" and "Play dead!" as the Red Sox have been doing?

/Sox fan. I suppose I really didn't expect them to get this far.

The ALDS and Game 1 gave us all false hope against a team they are currently 9-13 against this year....

lunchinlewis: Why does Boston support Hugo Chavez?

Because we're mostly godless socialists up here. But don't worry, gentrification is getting rid of the artists and old money liberals. Boston'll be as stiff and right wing as most every other American city once the rich Universities buy up all the low income neighborhoods with predatory capitalist tactics.

No question Minnesota will try to claim anything in a desperate attempt at recognition.

Doesn't make "Citgo sign" any less lame.

Actually since I didn't even know they had a famous Citgo sign, I'm not even sure how famous it really is.

If this one burns down, I'm sure Exxon would be happy to put up a big sign to make the citizens of Boston feel better about their skyline.

The Citgo sign is actually just a big billboard that's for rent, like any other billboard. It hasn't always been a Citgo sign, I can't remember what it used to be, but it was something different for a while.

Nope, it's been a Citgo sign since 1965, and was a Cities Service sign for 25 years before that (Cities Service is the former name of Citgo).

You might be thinking of the Moosehead sign on the Buckminster?

You have no idea what you are talking about.

2008-10-15 04:37:46 PM
The first sign featuring the Cities Service green-and-white trefoil logo was built in 1940, and was replaced with the trimark in 1965. In 1979 Governor Edward J. King ordered the sign turned off as an example of energy conservation. Four years later, Citgo attempted to disassemble the weatherbeaten sign, and was surprised to be met with widespread public affection for the sign and protest at its threatened removal.
To each their own, I guess.

Exactly my thoughts. Why hasn't the sign been taken down like Hussein's statues were? Oh, right, some dictators are OK.

Listen, I'm an Astros fan and I'm rooting for the Rays (lots of former Astros on that team) but Boston is far from eliminated. If anyone can come back from 3-1, it's definitely the Red Sox.

Saying Boston has a famous Citgo sign is like saying Philadelphia has a famous bell.

2008-10-15 04:39:16 PM
it is only famous because it is above the Green Monster (left Field wall) in Fenway. It isn't something pointed out on a tour of Boston.

NikolaiFarkoff: I'm even more surprised there hasn't been backlash against a Citgo sign

It's not really famous as a Citgo Sign so much as a driver's landmark. You can see it from all over town, so it's useful in a city of weirdly angled, overlapping one-way roads.

"Where the hell are we?"
"I dunno, where's the Citgo sign?"
"Ohhh, THERE we are."

Funny, I grew up in Tampa and don't care about the Rays. 1. I left long before they were a team. 2. If the pitcher doesn't bat, it's not really baseball.

Sort of like the Big Chicken in Marietta, GA. Even pilots use it.

What? No it wasn't. You're a moron. It has always been Citgo's sign from back when they first put it up under their previous name "Cities Service" in 1940. It has been turned off, attempted to be disassembled, formally declared a landmark, and recently had its glass neon tubes replaced with LEDs. But it has always been Citgo. Unless you're thinking about that one time when another company bought the sign for a year...what was that company's name again...oh right, it was "STFU, you moron".

Also, if you don't know about the Citgo Sign in Boston, then you must not know shiat about Fenway Park, the Red Sox, Kenmore Square, or Boston in general. That's fine, we like it that way. Stay in Bumblefark, MN or wherever you are and pretend to be awesome. Geezus, the sign was part of Field of Dreams when they visit Fenway Park, so you're obviously not a movie buff either.

I've always used the TransAmerica tower to navigate SF. I can't place the Sutro Tower, but then again I kinda suck.

Hell, I had a Duck Boat tour driver point it out once we were on the river portion of the tour. It's definitely talked about for all the tourists. That other guy is talking out of his ass.

I didn't know this about the Big Chicken.

"The new Big Chicken even includes the original design of beak and eyes which move, although this time the vibrations which plagued the first structure (even to the point of breaking windows) have been eliminated."

Breaking windows? WTH was it doing? Sounds like a bad Japanese horror movie.
