But because the entrees were breaded or pre-browned, some consumers thought they also were precooked and simply warmed them in the microwave. Microwaving did not get them hot enough to kill salmonella bacteria in the raw chicken.

When they cut into it and started eating oozing, pink, gooey raw chicken they didn't get a clue that something was amiss?

I came in to see a "Fark super-AD fan" post something about GOB.

Only took 6 posts.

I was gonna say that.

I once bit into a fried chicken sandwich from a fast food place that was completely raw on the inside. That shiat was farking nasty, you gotta be an idiot to not notice something like that.

TFA: In March, the USDA issued a public health alert to remind consumers that the "instructions on the package need to be followed for safety," spokeswoman Laura Reiser says.

In order to "follow" instructions, one must first know what those instructions are -- in this case, the consumer is required to read the instructions.

For a lot of people, that's asking too much of them.

Disneyland has instructions above the sinks in the bathrooms on how to wash your hands. I mean, if you don't know how to wash your hands, are you going to know how to read? Or care that there are instructions?

Yes. I grew up on a 40 acre farm, and we had chickens and cows. I've helped butcher cows out in the field as well as chop the heads off chickens before stuffing good tasty meat in the freezer for later enjoyment.

Only thing that kind of grossed me out was watching a cow's tongue quiver for an hour after setting it aside on the pickup truck bed...twitch, twitch, twitch...

Those signs are there so I can grab the Japanese guy by the back of his shirt and point to something before he just walks out of the bathroom without washing his hands and touches everything I'm about to touch.

I'm guessing that the phrase "alcohol was involved" figures into this.

My last two comments were incredibly ethnocentric. Let me make it clear that I love all of God's children. I just happen to think that God looks a lot more like me or Kirk Douglas than the rest of you.

Maybe people should, oh I dunno, prepare their own food more. Wait, what am I saying these people cannot manage to heat up pre-prepared food correctly.

too bad salmonella isn't fatal

2008-10-15 05:26:12 PM
I guess if it only happens once a year, that's not so bad.

But Jebus that's stupid. Those chicken breasts are supposed to be cooked for 45 minutes at 350 degrees. Why would someone think they could be warmed up in a microwave, even if the lack of directions wasn't a tip-off.

I always thought these salmonella news stories were hilarious. Having diarrhea for a day is not news. Especially if you get it because you are dumb and don't read the preparation instruction.

If treatment for your illness is Gatorade (new window), then it is not news.

At least with the comming of socialized medical care we can see more people die at an earlier age.

I really wish they wouldn't fix this. Really, something needs to come in and cull the herd. If you are too much of an idiot to cook yourself a pre-prepared meal without making yourself ill, you deserve your discomfort.

No relation. It's a quote from a well-known (I thought) Monty Python sketch. "Gob" made me think of it.

I think they are talking about Antioch Farms, judging by the specific products named. I bought some yesterday, and made dinner. It was good enough for cheap frozen food. But it says in large letters on the top of the box "RAW Product. Cook to an internal temperature of 160 degrees F as measured by use of a thermometer." And on the back, under the cooking instructions, it says very specifically not to use a microwave and microwaving raw chicken is not considered to be safe.

I don't know how much more clearly they can label these unless they start naming the product "Raw uncooked chicken that needs to be baked in an oven for 30 minutes or else you might die, stuffed with broccoli and cheese."
