This is smart parenting. I got my first pocket knife for my eighth birthday, and have carried one ever since. I think I started learning knife safety when I was about six, those pinewood derby cars were fun to make.

I got started with gun safety when I was even younger. My first memory of my grandpa was him showing me his pistols and freaking out about keeping it pointed in a safe direction with my finger off the trigger. Now it is just instinct to follow those safety rules. I did not get my own guns until I could legally buy them myself, but went shooting regularly with my dad throughout my teens. Now I have cooler guns than him and he is the one begging me to take him shooting.
