The American constitution was founded and crafted on the assumption that the people would protect their rights with guns. You know, the one immutable, irrefutable debating point of the populace, the one true check against tyranny, greed, and corruption. Unfortunately, not only is it the first thing made illegal, it is tabooed by the very populace who's rights were meant to be kept by force.

Canada is buying good paper (actual mortgages) to free up capital rom healthy banks. This is actually really smart. The US should have done this 1 year ago.

Instead the US is buying mortgage based securities which will probably be mostly unrecoverable because of the way they are structured.

Tomorrow, Canada will own $25 Billion in mortgages. If half these houses forclose than we will own $12.5 Billion in Mortgages and $12.5 Billion in houses which can be resold.

albo: and remember, that health care may not be as free once your largest trading partner stops buying your stuff

Quite true. 80% of our economy is exports to the US, primarily commodities. BC lumber, Saskatchewan potash, Ontario and Quebec manufacturing will all take a hit. Despite oil price drops, Alberta is probably one of the most attractive places on the planet economically at the moment.

albo: hitchking: When people are worried about their savings and their jobs, it's nice to know that no employer or insurance company can take your coverage away.

yeah, but who's going to pay for that coverage when tax revenues are down because business is slow and people are out of work?

you'll have the same population needing the same amount of health care or more, but less money to pay for it. you guys have a magical money tree in Alberta you can take it from?

Not that we need it, but yeah,we do. (new window)

Alberta has chronic worker shortages, no debt, turns a surplus every year (13 billion last year), and is weighted in the two commodities that will suffer the least- energy and agriculture. If things get truly shiatty elsewhere, I expect the flood of people here to get much worse.

what_now: So, I'm planning on driving to Montreal this weekend, but I don't have a hotel room. It's about a 6 hr drive from Boston, I think. How much will a room run me? It doesn't have to be fancy, just clean.

Saborlas: Canada has French Canadians. USA still gets the better part of the deal.

Doctor Funkenstein: If you guys would build a wall around Quebec and never let any of them out of it, you'd be pretty much flawless.

You miss the beauty of Canada. Quebec is our poison pill. You guys would have invaded us long ago if not for that one reason. That's because we know what American's kryptonite is: French intimidates and scares them.

itsfullofstars: To bad the Canadian dollar is tanking.

As an aside, a tanking Canadian dollar is great for exports to the US. When our dollar falls relative to the America's, they buy more of our stuff. A high Canadian dollar is one of the reasons the automotive industry has been so hard hit (aside from the fact that Chrysler and Ford suck. GM sucks too, but the Oshawa plant is actually a great plant)

My Baloney Has No First Name: High banking standards have kept Canada's financial institutions afloat and out of the kind of trouble that has sunk many of their international peers, Finance Minister Jim Flaherty said Wednesday.

That's a nice unbiased source there. Especially in the midst of an election campaign.

That's what I was thinking. The Conservatives are all sunshine and lollipops on the economy, trying to convince us that it's all their doing and that Dion hasn't a clue when it comes to money, when it was Paul Martin under Chretien (*ptooey*) that got the government books back in order in the first place.

This is a good thing. We Canucks had a nice run where we could do all our US shopping, got it done, and now are ready to go back to the more economically-stable position of lower-value dollar that helps fuel our export economy.

I see the fantastic job the gov't has done in the financial arena (e.g., actually passing legislation to give any jackass a home loan whether they can pay for it or not, throwing billions at companies/in the toilet, etc.), so I CANNOT WAIT until they take over health care here. My god, it will be so great. I mean, it's obvious, the government is expert and knowledgeable in all areas.
