As if it takes a cop to wave a flag.

Police details rape the state budget. Police officers work their regular shift, then they do the details at overtime rate.

2008-10-08 12:12:14 PM
This annoys me more than anything about cops. Its protecting their pay more than people.

Always shocked me they have cops doing this. Every other state I lived in had your usual hung over working stiff doing it because they were too drunk or incompetent to do the real work.

Welcome to Massachusetts.

Next step, of course, retiring on disability after a one-day stint as 'acting chief'.

HECKLE!

Welcome to my state. A cop intentionally drove the wrong way down a one-way street yesterday to prove that flagmen can't handle traffic incidents. Real brilliant here in Taxachusetts.

2008-10-08 12:23:07 PM
Paying someone overtime to stand around holding stop/slow sign in their hand is pretty stupid & a waste of taxpayers money. Governor Patrick gets a hero tag.

2008-10-08 12:23:17 PM
There are places that use cops to direct traffic for road crews? Really??? I always thought that cops would find that type of work demeaning.

2008-10-08 12:24:22 PM
No kidding, when I moved here to Mass I could not beleive they had cops guarding every pothole for $75/hr.
This is a complete scam, police unions (and fire unions) have WAY too much power here. I'm amazed this law got passed - especially by a democratic governor. Bravo I say, bravo.

2008-10-08 12:25:16 PM
What a bunch of jerks. Heck, I didn't even know that police officers act as flaggers in some places - here in Washington, they've always been civilians, and I just figured it was that way everywhere. I guess they figured it was police officers everywhere, hence they're "entitled", eh?

Guess what, tools? It doesn't take a cop to direct traffic, and our "civilian" flaggers do a perfectly fine job of directing traffic safely. Sorry to cut into your overtime or whatever, but then these people could use jobs too ya know.

2008-10-08 12:25:33 PM
How much training and intelligence does it really take to hold a sign with two sides and rotate it every two minutes?

I am not surprised the cops believe they are the right men for the job.

2008-10-08 12:25:34 PM
In many cases, the cops are all of thwe above.

And this, Ladies and Gentlemen(Ahem), is the real BS behind it. It certainly is pretty easy to be "injured" while "working" on a construction site. I've gone past some road work where the cops are just sleeping there...while making 40.00 an hour.

Now tell me they are honest hardworking types....I need the laugh.

Our state's contractors often have some connected dude's twenty-something daughter doing the flagging, so we got that going for us.

2008-10-08 12:26:15 PM
sigh. the police in America seem to just act like any other gang, serving their own interests at the expense of everyone else. the only difference is they have the blessing of the government. Police are a necessary function of the government, but we really need to overhaul the entire law enforcement apparatus in America IMO. they need at least an iota of accountability.

Let me guess...no one gave him a ticket.

Combine this with the fact that in Boston, -no- construction job, no matter how inconsequential, must be supervised by police. It's a racket, nothing less; they've got their panties in a bunch because they see a market that they don't have 100% control over.

$40/hour buys a lot of demeaning.

I love the union stance: They are taking food off of our tables.

Do these cops actually think this is more or less likely to make the public respect them and the authority they wield?

Nobody wants to pay someone $40/hr to flag traffic when $20 (which is still way high, IMO) will get people stampeding to do the work. Expecting the public to pay for that is just disrespectful. If a community is going to pay sworn police officer wages, that officer needs to be doing something only they can do. Even just running speed control in the work site- they will be doing the work they should be doing, they'll still find the criminals they've been claiming to find, and work zone fines will more than pay for his time. One ticket an hour will cover the costs of his pay and equipment.

Cops acting like the emotional infants most of them are? Shocking.

This calls for the img1.fark.net tag.

Pincy: There are places that use cops to direct traffic for road crews? Really??? I always thought that cops would find that type of work demeaning.

Yeah. Here they use construction workers, or occasionally prisoners when the prisoners are doing the work. The guards just sit in the vans and do whatever guards do when they are alone.

2008-10-08 12:40:07 PM
What we should do is SPLIT the police force! Make two separate yet equally powerful groups (in terms of jurisdiction, funding, manpower, equipment, etc) each half the size of what we have now.

Give them incentives to hassle the other side with parking tickets and other B.S. cop work just as much as they do any other civilian. For example, if the cops in TFA were in group 'A' then the cops in group 'B' would be the ones arresting these asshats for disturbing the peace. Harassment charges could be filed by the worker in group B's court so it wouldn't get thrown out.

Division of power! Have the police police the police!

THIS

Brother in law is a cop. As soon as he put on his uniform he gets into what he calls "his character". He tried his character on me at his house once just before he left for work. Get "in character" when you hit the station house. He never did it again with me.

2008-10-08 12:40:52 PM
Arguing that allowing civilians to direct traffic endangers the public and holding signs that read "Governor Patrick Doesn't Care About Safety," they crowded around the flagger, called him names such as "scab" and "pathetic," and did their best to distract him from his work.

Governor Patrick isn't distracting the flaggers, douchewipes.
YOU are.

Throw them in JAIL.

nothingyet: Welcome to my state. A cop intentionally drove the wrong way down a one-way street yesterday to prove that flagmen can't handle traffic incidents. Real brilliant here in Taxachusetts.

To be fair Taxachusetts really isn't anymore. Taking into account government fee's and sky high property taxes, we're now pretty close to NH. Plus our economy is [was?] a lot better off.

Remember, it's still a tax if the government ends up with your money, even if they call it something different.

As for these Pigs, f they're doing this on duty, why doesn't the state fire them? If they're off duty, whats to keep a citizen from making a citizens arrest? [yeah, i know]

2008-10-08 12:43:42 PM
Heh. This article nicely sums up why people everywhere laugh at cops.

/flag work has always been done by construction workers where I live. Still waiting for the death and destruction...

As a contractor involved in big projects in congested areas sometimes you do need that authoritative figure out there (especially where crane work is involved). But for crossing guard work use a crossing guard.

2008-10-08 01:04:52 PM
Headline is one of those trick questions, isn't it? Last I knew most cops fell into all three categories listed.

2008-10-08 01:06:21 PM
Oh yeah, they've been on the radio all morning, crying and shrieking about safety issues and how they NEED to be in there.

Nothing like seeing a stinking goldbricker feeding off the public trough while yakking on a cellphone.

Howie Carr (resident cranky newspaper writer for the Herald) recieved a letter from an ex-wife of a State Police officer describing how they had a system that one officer would call in sick causing the officer on standby to come in for overtime pay to cover.

Worthless pigs.

Phoenix_M: Paying someone overtime to stand around holding stop/slow sign in their hand is pretty stupid & a waste of taxpayers money. Governor Patrick gets a hero tag.

THAT'S what this is??? Christ, that kind of work is done by illegal immigrants with barely a cursory understanding of traffic laws down here in Virginia, and I have yet to have a problem with them. These cops want $40 an hour to do that?

I normally take the side of the cops in cop bashing threads, but seriously, screw these guys.

2008-10-08 01:07:03 PM
I've done flagging during road construction, its the most boring shiat ever. I'd let the cops have that, I'd rather be busting my ass and actually working than standing in one spot holding a sign all day.

2008-10-08 01:14:29 PM
As a former road worker, engineer/surveyor, NEVER give the flag to the dumb guy.

That'll get you killed.

2008-10-08 01:15:44 PM
Classy.
Yeah, I trust those douchebags with my safety.

2008-10-08 01:16:23 PM
Back in the 90's utility companies stopped routinely hiring off-duty MSP troopers when they worked near roads which pissed them off. There was a telephone lineman who was injured when a state trooper rammed his cruiser into the ladder.

/Too lazy to go Google this, just trust me.

2008-10-08 01:17:02 PM
This is a pickle, since they're both unions...on the other hands, cops have been used to bust unions so often, it's ironic for them to have one. I'm going with the civilians here.

2008-10-08 01:17:55 PM
I can't believe how many people (cops, journalists, and farkers) don't realize that POLICE ARE CIVILIANS! (with the exception of military police of course)

Hmmmm, the other 49 states would like to argue about the union's concerns over the "risks" of using flaggers.

I hope these brainless thugs get fired for this, especially the one driving his car in the wrong direction. But they won't.

2008-10-08 01:43:11 PM
"I hope you sleep at night," Stoneham Patrolman Joe Ponzo yelled at the flaggers, the first to be used on a road project under new regulations.

Um, I hope you sleep at night? What kind of lame insult is that?

On the other hand, if there is an accident or mishap near (or as a result of) a construction/road crew site (it's been known to happen), who would you want to be the first responder: a cop or Simon Simple?
