FTA: The couple spent hours "force feeding" the machine and maximised their point-earning potential by cutting cans in half

I'm not sure they really wanted that piece of information broadcast to the world, but I suppose they probably told the reporter without thinking.

Pro tip: break in to the side, then feed the same cans in over and over. You're saving the environment, after all. It's worth the effort.

I hate when smug bastards claim that they are helping clean up their town/city/world while collecting cans at the same time. You're doing to to make money and that's the only reason. It's true that cans are litter and it's good to pick them up. But if you're going to get all holier-than-thou you had better be picking up any garbage you see, not just the payables.

props for being environmentally friendly and all, but if they had spent the time they took collecting stuff and putting it into the machine getting and working at a part-time second job they probably could have earned considerably more than the 3,000 pounds the flight cost...

I'd love to do something like this, however there's already a fleet of people on bicycles riding around raiding dumpsters for cans where I live. Actually caught a guy cutting through the chicken wired protecting a dumpster from unauthorized access (Due to illegal dumping) just to rifle through the trash to look for cans.

still, while not being the best option, the fact that a couple can suck in their pride and pre-conceived notions of romance and status, and do something so zany, together? They were made for each other.

You did NOT just post that. I thought of that show for the first time in 20 years on Friday. And here you are posting a pic of the Vulture and crew.

They're too drunk.

Actually, I have a feeling that the best way to collect old aluminium cans is to go round the night before collection-day in areas where they'll pick up your recyclable materials from the kerb(/curb)side.

Then cutting the cans in half.

Some parts of the world have an arcane mode of transportation available to the public, and those people walk a considerable distance* to and from it.

It says they took the long way home from nights at the pub, which suggests they were walking.

Nice start -- I picked up an entire 4-piece drum set that was set out on the curb for trash pickup. Turns out, this vintage (1960's era) set was worth over $700+. I sold it on eBay and bought an entire, brand new Pearl 7-piece set in its place with the money - I did not spend a dime out of pocket......farking sweet!

Can't forget the Great Wendy's/Airtran Giveaway of 2005, either.

I got 8 round-trip tickets for me, family and friends by fishing around in their dumpsters at 3 AM a few nights. Also found a sweet Wendy's uniform.

Unfortunately, every time I eat at Wendy's now I have flashbacks... you can never get that dumpster smell out of your mind.

So... cutting cans in half and announcing it? One fail there.

Announcing the prize to the BBC and now requiring that they pay taxes on it? Fail two.

When I lived in northern California they had machines like that. You put in your recyclables and it spit change back out at you.

It paid for beer every few weeks.
Wish they had those machines in the midwest.

2008-10-06 03:23:58 PM
They were collecting large amounts of metal cans and redeeming them for club points which they redeemed for air miles.

Does England have no low level scrap recycling? It looks like they got ripped off on the metals, even with their can splitting.

/But it sounds like a great way to get people to recycle plastic bottles.
//And glass.

Mrs Till, 24, a merchant navy navigation officer, said: "Sometimes we were posting 600 items a time into the machine. We would be there for hours putting stuff through the slot.

Ha, the machines here print out a receipt for the service desk, but the supermarkets won't pay out more than $10 max, to keep the homeless away.

There is no deposit on cans and bottles in the UK so there is no benefit... unless of course there is still a few drops of alcohol in them!

That's a great story. They cleaned up a portion of the world, and got paid well for it.

More people should be doing stuff like that.

What I want to know is why there is no program like that anywhere in this country. I'd gladly participate.

That may be an F-84F but I do believe that Sybarite's reference was to a short lived TV show called "Salvage 1". Andy Griffith's character owned a junk yard and built a space ship to take him to the moon to salvage the old Apollo stuff.

http://www.tv.com/salvage-1/show/3650/summary.html

Oh man, I guess this means I'm officially an old timer.
