I've seen less delusion from organized religion.

/suck it, Cubs

2008-10-06 08:55:34 AM
Face it, Cubs - you haven't won in the postseason since the Bartman. You need to forgive him, or his curse shall continue... until the next boneheaded things happens that you people can fixate on.

2008-10-06 09:29:35 AM
I didn't read TFA, but I'm going to assume it's similar to the 8 Reasons the Tigers will be Great in '08 seen last fall.

2008-10-06 09:32:36 AM
I really wanted them to win.. but after the loudmouth/uppity/righteous fans posting here, I am sort of glad they lost.

I am a die hard Cub fan. I'm not sure i fall into the 'loudmouth/uppity/righteous fans posting here' category, but oh well.

The fact is they choked. They were tight and did not play the way they did the whole summer. There were many games this season where they fell behind and they always had an attitude that they could come back. That attitude was gone forever as soon as the Dodgers hit the grand slam and went up 4-2 in game one. You could feel it.

The problem is, this is going to be the case every time they make the playoffs. Talks of curses and fans with long memories will ALWAYS carry that into the post season. So, make all the predictions and 'looking good on paper' you want, but until the players learn to overcome that atmosphere, they will never win it all.

The Red Sox overcame it and have been on fire ever since. Even looking like they have a shot to repeat.

2008-10-06 10:20:26 AM
Yeah. Keep telling yourself that. Where is the unlikely tag?

Dr.Knockboots: I really wanted them to win.. but after the loudmouth/uppity/righteous fans posting here, I am sort of glad they lost.

I blame someone whose name starts with aq. Not really. He was decent in the White Sox threads (there wasn't one yesterday-- still mad about this).

Oh, for f*ck's sake already.

It's the Cubs. They're f*cked, we're f*cked. Everybody's f*cked.

2008-10-06 11:31:24 AM
Oh for god's sake, can we not mention the cubs for the next couple months? The thing that makes this year worse than last year is that last year they didn't deserve to make the playoffs and I had no expectations of them advancing once there. This year they had a solid squad with amazing depth and they blew it. They just choked. Good luck to the Sox and I'll still be rooting for the cubs next year so all you haters have someone to point their fingers at call a ghey-fanboy-frathead-deuchebag even though none of those apply.

2008-10-06 11:31:46 AM
I swear I thought this was an Onion article. This goes to show how delusional Cubs fans actually are. In 2009, they may shine in the regular season, but come playoff time its back to being the Cubs. And why? Because they play too many day games.

What really pisses me off about the whole deal isn't that the Cubs "choked" or "blew it" or whatever....The Dodgers deserve some credit here, because they KICKED THE CUBBIES ASS!!!! Their pitching was better, their hitting was better, their defense was better....Period, end of story!!! (or Book It. Done. if you prefer)

All this sniping about the Cubs failure negates a strong showing by the Dodgers, which as a Dodger Blue bleeder, irks me to no end.... Yes, I'm aware that the Dodgers won a weak division, BUT, they just swept the team with the NL's best regular season record,so that arguement got old real quick....

In closing, SUCK IT CUBBIES!!!

/not really, if the Dodgers hadn't made it, I'd have been rooting for the Cubs too (unless/until they met the Angels in the Series)

I love how the "fans" have to change so the Cubs can finally win a title.

Last I checked, the players played, the fans cheered.

I really wanted good things to happen to the Cubs this year, if for no other reason than that my grandmother is a big Cubbies fan and she would be thrilled if they ever won another WS...

I don't know about you guys, but personally, I'd like to hear aquigley apologize for being such an annoying douche over the course of the season in this thread. Better yet, start a new one.

After that is accomplished, we can go about beating whoever writes articles like these before Spring Training is over.

I'm not really a Cubs fan (although I'd like to see them win one) but I've started to wonder if I'll ever witness a Cubs World Series title. And I'm only 26.

What is it going to take? A massive free agent pickup like the Celtics did last year? Even then, I doubt it would actually happen.

Reason One: A new owner cometh

Yep, in case you were living under a rock somewhere, here's a news item for you: The Cubs are going to be sold soon! Wow! Crazy! And while we do not yet know the name of the next person to own the Cubs, I can guarantee you one thing: that crazy son of a biatch will be flying into town in a moneyplane, and he's going to be looking to win. Maybe that guy will be Mark Cuban. Maybe it'll be a surprise. But whomever it is, you can bet that they will strive to give the Cubs all the financial backing they need to get the right players for the job. That is a huge advantage for the Cubs.

LOL. Like they don't have that right now?

Optimism is fine. Being overconfident and douchey is not. I present as evidence:

Every time I saw this silly badge this year, I thought of October, when everyone else would have fun posting it.

already talking about next year? wow.

cubs fans: this is one reason everyone hates you

2008-10-06 12:23:59 PM
Jesus, Cubs fans, can you just let it go for a few months? This eternal (and delusional) optimism thing is getting pretty old.

How about waiting until you actually win something to talk about it?

Yankee fans have the (well deserved) reputation of being arrogant pricks, but at least we have a reason. Cubs fans spent all summer telling everyone it was their year, then saw their team go out with a whimper as soon as meaningful baseball began in October.

Just let it go. The Cubs are certainly good enough to get back to the playoffs next year, but maybe hold off on all the "Book it. Done" crap until something is actually worth booking.

RomeoJr: I don't know about you guys, but personally, I'd like to hear aquigley apologize for being such an annoying douche over the course of the season in this thread. Better yet, start a new one.

Yeah, that is who I might have been referring to, but I wasn't boneheaded enough to call him out in a thread he is not in. He was pretty fair in some White Sox threads and wished them the best (as did I for the Cubs). He is not the kind of Cubs fan that I detest as he actually knows something about baseball.

I am trying my hardest not to make fun of the Cubs because the White Sox are in yet another must win situation and soon people may be laughing at me (thought it would be yesterday). However, I can't help myself and have poked fun at the Cubs on three Fark threads today, one you won't see, one hasn't hit Literland yet.

2008-10-06 12:26:45 PM
What they need is somebody from the Red Sox to come in and show them how to get past the weight of extended futility. Yes, it's not their fault the franchise has failed for a century, but it's their task to get past it. For as much talk as Piniella did over the season about ignoring the past, you could still sense that the players felt it. Once that burden is gone, they will be able to succeed. The key is to get past it. I don't know how, and obviously they don't either.

Good god, this seriously is getting a bit embarrassing to watch. #1 vs #2 in the NL...and it ain't even close.

Cubs. World Series. Book it. Done.

I can only book the NL pennant, because I have no idea who the AL team will be and I don't watch much AL baseball.
But the Cubs will be in the first World Series of any of our lifetimes. Book it. Done.

I am sure of the NL pennant, though.

I respectfully disagree. The only game of the series that the Dodgers geniuinely beat the Cubs was Game 3. In both Games 1 and 2, the Cubs beat themselves, by having a pitcher that couldn't find the strike zone, and a field that couldn't make plays.

I like aquigeley. I also like messing with him on FARK. I dont think he needs to apologise in general. He may need to buy a shedload of totalFARK subscriptions but since Im not one of the betters Im not affected by that. He is a first rate fan of a ball team with issues and he isnt a bit ashamed of it. He takes a lot of crap over it and gives some back. But he is (mostly) civil and generally far more positive about the Cubs than he is negative about the Evil Empire of White Sox. Alot of his Book It dones didnt happen but he had the balls to put it out there and is now taking his lumps instead of hiding. Most times he is just an exhuberant vocal and knowlegable Cubs fan with slightly delusional faith in his Cubs. Not a godawful douchebag Cubs fan.

Heres to you aquigeley type Cubs fans. Keep the faith and maybe next year it could happen.

New ownership and a new GM might be what the Cubbies need. It seemed to have worked in Boston. Oh, and get rid of Lou Piniella immediately, he's a disaster. Look at Terry Francona and Joe Torre, two guys who've had a little success...notice any difference in managerial styles between them and Sweet Lou?
