And I'm sure the government will only use the mind reading machine for your own good.

What about the flying cars? 50 years ago they said those would be here today, and I'm still waiting... *tapping foot impatiently*

2002-12-29 01:10:24 PM
...if man is still alive...

2002-12-29 01:12:17 PM
what a useless article.

in the land of next tuesday...

2002-12-29 01:13:14 PM
Is there any actual research backing up these claims, or did some yayhoo just pull a bunch of random crap out of a Ray Bradbury book?

2002-12-29 01:13:51 PM
Thanks to Bush the trees won't need lights as they'll glow all on their own.

2002-12-29 01:15:48 PM
Yeah, we will have robot assistants 50 years in the future, just like 50 years ago they said we would have robot assistants 50 years in the future. Yes, I'm bitter.

I'm betting that PETA still isn't going to be happy with artificial turkey. I've seen arguments from vegans that the mere emulation of meat with today's products is still somehow a violation of the 'spirit' of veganism. Apparently eating something that merely resembles meat is some sort of thought crime.

Whatta buncha hooey.
I've been hearing this crap since 1972 delivered us mood rings.
*sigh*

Just take what any "futurist" says and divide it by ten, multiply the timeframe to it becoming reality by five, and there you have the truth...

Same people who said we'd have flying cars by now, etc. etc. etc.

When, in reality, when you look at it on a day-to-day basis, VERY little is different now than in 1950....

I'd be willing to bet if someone came from the past, say 1950, to today... they certainly would have their expectations lowered... it would be a hell of a lot less "different" then they imagined...

(modified for the thread at hand)

The year is 2050 and a man and his son are walking through New York.
They come up on a bare space among the office buildings and the man sighs, saying "Son, fifty years ago the Twin Towers stood right there."
The boy says, "What were the Twin Towers, Daddy?"
"Well, son, they were two of the tallest buildings in the world. They were filled with thousands of offices and thousands of people worked there. Then one day, some Arabs flew two planes into them and brought them to the ground, destroying them."
They stood in silence a while longer before the boy looked up at his father and asked -"What's an Arab?"

2002-12-29 01:19:56 PM
This is all fine and dandy.

But where are the giant robots?

Hilarity, etc

Optikeye, yes I also disagree with Bush's glowing tree initiative. right....

Jakal
Yeah, we will have robot assistants 50 years in the future, just like 50 years ago they said we would have robot assistants 50 years in the future. Yes, I'm bitter.

Jakal, Why don't you take a stress pill and install Bonzi Buddy.

2002-12-29 01:27:45 PM
Optikeye, I will install it once Bonzi Buddy can make me pancakes and stops reporting to the governments about what porn I look at.

2002-12-29 01:28:31 PM
what a bunch of crap.

some of those things are further from reality than flying cars were in B.C. "technology which will allow people to read each others minds"

2002-12-29 01:31:06 PM
Wow...I'll be 88. Hope there's still some good weed around by then.

2002-12-29 01:31:30 PM
If we were making real technological progress the turkey would cook itself and the robots will be chewing the food for me.

2002-12-29 01:34:39 PM
Forsythe P. Jones, In 50 years they will have tomatoes that can produce THC. The popularity of pasta skyrockets.

2002-12-29 01:36:00 PM
Futurists are funny. They make predictions just far enough into the future that they can apply for grants to research these ideas, but will have retired (in the bahamas with the nice grant money) before anyone realizes that their predictions will never even come close.

Had a CS prof once who was always asked why his stuff never actually worked; his answer was that he was "developing on a 20 year timeline". He gets six-figure-grants for lines like that. There's no justice.

Ever seen the IBM commercial where Sisko from DS9 rants about getting his flying car? Cracked me up...

2002-12-29 01:38:21 PM
more bullshiat from the same "futurologist".

2002-12-29 01:38:45 PM
*gives a hi-five to Jakal ,and keeps fingers crossed.*

2002-12-29 01:43:00 PM
This is quite a funny coincidence, I just had a dream where I was present at a futuristic Xmas day. One of these damn synthetic turkeys pecked me in the face then sprinted off on my hoverboard and the kitchen robot cooked the dog.

Tasted just like real dog.

2002-12-29 01:44:29 PM
Someone has to say it:

I thought by then Santa Claus was going to be replaced by a killer robot?

2002-12-29 01:47:30 PM
As long as there's a place to get a hover conversion for my car like in Back To The Future I'll be happy

2002-12-29 01:47:50 PM
I predict that in the future we will still be using the internet and masturbating like wild monkeys

2002-12-29 01:51:28 PM
I think we'll have robot assassins by then, but not assistants. Can't let the rabble have that sort of thing. Gotta keep all the really cool toys in the hands of responsible people... like the Pentagon.

*cough*

2002-12-29 01:51:43 PM
I'm waiting for a hoverboard

2002-12-29 01:53:16 PM
"Futurologists" suck. They get my hopes up for hoverboards and flying cars and robot wives that are efficient, yet inexpensive, and nothing ever comes of it. Where are the robot lady hookers from A.I.? And flying cars? Stupid cars are getting to be more like apartments than aeroplanes, soon you will live in your car and it will be three stories high and 18 cubits long. Life is becomming more like the Flintstones than the Jetsons. I still mow my lawn with a crab on a stick and use a bird to do my hedges. I still don't have a small jetpack to go to class, nor do I see many self walking sidewalks. And why doesn't my car fold up into a suitcase? Yes, these future teller people are billshiat. Maybe they should start saying things are going to be exactly like they are now so some fool up and changes them. Reverse psychology and whatnot. I am not going to do it, so don't send me any money (wink).

Science. What has science ever done for us?

2002-12-29 01:53:43 PM
Xmas in 2050? We'll all be glowing little mutants wondering what the hell happened in 2003, scrabbling around for the last remaining bits of human flesh...

Christmas will merge with Kwanza after talks with Jesse Jackson to create the new ultimate super-holday: Kwanzmas

...that and the Earth will be run by damn dirty apes...

2002-12-29 02:03:40 PM
In 4 or 5 years, I will become a futurologist.

Best. Job. Ever.

The Future of Xmas Trees.

Inflatable trees with fiber optic lights, come packaged in its own box which doubles as its stand.

You heard it here first.

12-29-02 01:13:51 PM Optikeye
"Thanks to Bush the trees won't need lights as they'll glow all on their own."

...And we all might still be free (thanks to GWB) to see them.

Warren Peese: Are you saying that if bush doesn't turn america into a police state that we will be enslaved?

2002-12-29 02:36:27 PM
Eatmorejesus

Yes! And how come I don't have a summer getaway on the moon. Sure I can buy some property there, but where are the galactic construction workers that will build me a nice Earthview biodome. I'm sick of all the empty promises as well! Take biology for example. That penis enlarger never did...I mean, ...how come medical advancement is going slow? I want to be able to cut my arm off and regenerate it just for the fun of it. Those damned scientist can't even find a cure for cancer. WTF?! They tease us and fill us up with hope by giving us that damn MP3 technology, but where is the real progress? I want a toaster that talks! I want a penis enlarger to...I mean, I want have a moon house with hot robot maids. Jetsons Smetsons, I want a a sidewalk that moves for me so I don't have to walk. I'd even take TV dinners in pill form. Hmff. Nothing. That's what we get.

2002-12-29 02:57:02 PM
I'm still waiting for my flying car.

2002-12-29 03:06:08 PM
Behold the flying car. Yes you too will be flying such a vehicle in a few decades, providing we don't nuke the world to shiat by then.

2002-12-29 03:50:23 PM
HDTV Porn is the killer app of the future.

2002-12-29 04:44:07 PM
Hmm... isn't this basically the same crap that, in 1950, they said we'd be having NOW?

I think Christmas of 2050 will be more like this: The few remaining human survivors of the Robot Revolution will call out to Jesus for salvation as they await having their precious chemical components harvested by their robotic masters. Their cries will go unanswered.

This thread needs a picture of Conan O'Brien in his "Year 2000" gear.

2002-12-29 09:14:04 PM
What about a replicator from Star Trek? I dont know if those will around by then. But it would be cool, so that way you wont have to worry about cooking the turkey!

2002-12-29 10:41:34 PM
Talking about synthetic turkey, this one really looks great.
