Everyone knew it. It was just that it was bad PR for the government to actually admit it, so they never did.

...Anyone who followed history paying attention kind of saw this as blatantly obvious. It was an execution in a power struggle. That it has been denied for so long is a symbol of the kind of power the Bolsheviks held.

Do we really need to sit here as judges of something that is still relatively recent history. Historians in the West have done a good job of laying blame, I don't think a court order in a country still unheeled by a century of turbulant revolutions should feel comfortable rocking the boat just yet.

I remember reading somewhere recently that they've definitely found all the bodies, so yes, it would appear Mick Jagger was right on that one :(

The body of Anastasia was positively identified by DNA evidence.

As for Rasputin, he was poisoned, but the poison took no effect, and was considered to have been weakened by the cooking process when the cakes were baked. He was then shot and wounded, then left to crawl around a while, shot a second time and kicked savagely to the head with a heavy boot.

He was dead when they threw him in the water, but the rumor "floated" around he had drowned. This is important because no one who died by drowning can become a saint in Russian Orthodoxy.

Russians believe great men never die, they just go into the ground to sleep for a few hundred years, then wake up and walk the earth again when a grave crisis looms. That is why they took such great pains to destroy the corpses of Rasputin, the Tsar and his children. That is also why they keep Lenin stuffed and mounted like a taxidemy specimen.

They fear a dead body as much as a live man.

Did they shoot the Deputy too?

I'd heard that the Bolsheviks were a little paranoid about shooting the Romanovs -- the Russian Orthodox church always preached that God would defend them. Yeah, these were war-hardened, trained men, and the Marxist party line is agnostic or atheist but, religious programming does leave a lingering doubt.

Anyway the story goes, they start shooting the Czar and his family, and the Czarina won't die, bullets are bouncing off her chest. After making enough of a mess of them, they go check it out. She'd hidden jewels in her corset, I guess assuming they'd escape and she could have put them to use. Instead, they just prolonged her death. That's why they had to bayonet them.

And scared the Fark out of some Bolsheviks, so some small payoff.

2008-10-02 03:54:08 PM
The shootings occurred on July 17, 1918, in the cellar of a merchant's family in Yekaterinburg. The Tsar's family was told to stand as if about to be snapped for a group photograph. Their guards then shot them, but the Tsaritsa and the girls had jewels sewn into their corsets and these appear to have deflected the bullets.

This reportedly terrified the killers, who had been brought up to believe that the royal family ruled by divine right and was therefore somehow shielded by God. The bayoneting also failed to kill all the group, so they were shot in the head at point-blank range.

Holy shiat! They were so rich the used jewels as body armor! You gotta give em this; the royal ladies were bad ass!

/Rest in peace, awesome Tsar and Tsarina of Russia. I liked you guys more than the Soviets. You had better taste.
