Look people, you're missing the point. I know it was just a month ago that John said the economy is fundamentally sound, but he's showing us that he's seen the writing on the wall and that it's time we all made sacrifices. He's actually demonstrating that yes, things will be fine, but we do need to cut back a bit and we all might need to consider whether or not it's time to make some cuts. I know it's not easy to swallow, but we all need to think about making do with 11 houses - you know, like they did back during the Great Depression.

I understand having a summer house or something, but I would be a basketcase if I had more than one house. I would constantly worry about what was happening to them & all the precious junk in them while I was gone-- did that noreaster punch a hole in the roof? are neighborhood kids having sex in my pool? did some intrepid soul cut the power so they could rob the place without an alarm?

It's a 5,000+ square foot estate with nine bedrooms, eight bathrooms, a seven-car garage, an entire extra gourmet chef's kitchen out by the swimming pools, a 1,750-square-foot guest house, and it's all on 2.7 gated acres.

When people get older, and especially when they are nearing the end of the road (I'd bet almost anything that, win or lose, McCain doesn't see 80), they start to think about their legacy, and how they will be remembered. And there's really no better way to be remembered than to be in one of the most exclusive clubs in the world, that of the US President.

Throw in a dash of ego, a pinch of arrogance, and a lifetime of having been a do-nothing-and-mostly-ignored Senator, and voila!, you've just explained John McCain.
