Just move farther north.

I've never been in Edmonton, so I can't say the phrase "Come on, is it really that bad?".

So there.

I resent the second and third comments - I live in Edmonton and I'm well-mannered and happy.

Thanks.

FTFA: The planning document suggests "lantern parades" where "people of all ages" would be urged to make lanterns. Later, they would be carried in neighbourhood parades.

Max avg. temperature in January: 15.6°F (-9.1°C) Link

/sounds like a winnar

I was just in Edmonton this weekend...such a hole. And I'm not just saying that because I'm Calgarian.

...okay, maybe I am.

Q- What to the Oilers and the Titanic have in common?
A- They both look good until they hit the ice

Q-Why to all the trees in Calgary lean north?
A- Because Edmonton sucks.

/Here all week, try the veal and tip your waitstaff

Ooo! An Edmonton bashing thread! Nice! My father in law lives there, I'm not sure which is the better reason to stay away . . .

Fail.

They start this in January when it reaches -40 degrees (Celsius and Fahrenheit are the same here)? Yikes.

Ok, I've been to Edmonton and it doesn't strike me as a bad place.

However, it's DEAD FLAT! It's on the edge of the prairie, and the mountains are a 4 hour drive away. How can you have a 10 week winter festival without skiing and tobogganing near by?

FTA:
"Let's do it right. Do it or go home. Let's own winter."

In Edmonton, winter owns YOU!

Well, they do have the river valley, and Rabbit Ski Hill is almost like Whistler *snicker*

"The animated figure, yet to be commissioned, is expected to be a mascot of sorts for a new festival called Winter Light: A Celebration of Edmonton's Winter Spirit. She represents the "beauty and goodwill of winter spirit," according to a city planning document."

In the US that mascot'd be shot down as sexist, if not a sexual harassment lawsuit.

I like living in Edmonton. I really do. I especially like how mother nature tries to kill you for six months of the year. If you don't dress properly you'll end up dead or in the hospital.

Edmonton? Pfft - I grew up in La Crete, about 500 miles north.

Live in Deadmonton and agree with most comments above .
Glad my town got mentioned.... The crazyness

2008-09-30 12:53:14 PM
fark that noise, it gets too goddamn cold during the "best winter months" to even let the dog more than 5 ft out the door to take a crap, let alone have parades and events and shiat.

you could probably arrange to have it in March and it'd still be snowing and cold, just not nipples-freezing-off-through-the-parka cold.

You only need 2 days in Edmonton, 1 for the Mall, another for the Mall.

10 Weeks in Deadmonton is a curse I'd wish on no man.

2008-09-30 12:57:13 PM
Edmonton is a lot better than Calgary if you like not being a redneck hick. I mean, at least there is something for not-redneck-hicks to do, even if it requires dodging gang gunfire.

2008-09-30 01:04:54 PM
So, like, take off you hosers, eh?

I took Canadian as a second language.

Tsk, they use knives here man. Stabminton is what I call it. I assume it's because people had to pay so much for their rent that they couldn't afford guns.

Also, edmonton happens to be the city with the highest cost of living in canada at the moment if I remember a report I saw a week ago correctly.

One of our summer students kept saying how great Edmonton was, and that crap flowed downhill, that's why Calgary sucked . . then I pointed out to him that Edmonton was at a lower elevation than Calgary. That shut him up good.

/Geography FTW

You couldn't pay me enough to live on the prairies.

Well ok, you could, but it would be a lot. I'm thinking about $200k/year.

2008-09-30 01:17:33 PM
Wow, so many Edmontonian farkers... someone should organize a Fark party and not invite the Cowtowners. :D

Don't they have Christmas in Canada? That shiat lasts at LEAST ten weeks down here.

Oh, Kent, that is so unfair! And we were going to make you King of the Winter Carnival.

stejm: Edmonton? Pfft - I grew up in La Crete, about 500 miles north.

I'm impressed. Even more so because I've been there about a dozen times.

I learned early on not to talk about getting wasted when in that town. I'm pretty sure the one lady whom I mortally offended is still praying for my soul...

Oh yes, the Mennonites are just a bit touchy. They'd call the New Jersey Devils the New Jersey No Names b/c they were all horribly offended by the name.

An interesting childhood, to say the least.

I hear this. But while many things said about Edmonton are true, what is also true is that it is so much better than Calgary.

Poor Calgary.

On what basis? Calgary atleast has good places to eat and hang out. Close to Banff. Why, IYO, is ED better?

/Genuinely want to know.

Oh, Edmonton. I could smell the drugs coming from you from the CFB. You are a terrible, terrible city and you destroyed the ligaments in my left knee and left me a broken Pte(t).
