I'm often amazed at the elasticity of the English language. For instance, the vast difference between my definition of "bad ass" and yours, subby.

I think that looks fun as hell

Where do I get a bigass free-wheeling bigwheel?

2008-09-29 03:26:58 PM
Rather tepid for bad-ass, but still looks fun. Besides, these are new bigwheels, not the 100% plastic tail-happy undersized death trap icons I grew up on.

Would be more impressed if they actually got up to about 40 mph and did not have to speed up the video.

WTF kind of Big Wheels are those? Are they custom built, or do they sell them like that now?

Nothing was as bad-ass as my Kitt big wheel.

Those need about 10 horsepower to be really dangerous and fun.

2008-09-29 03:44:17 PM
That was pretty lame.

Crappy video. Crappy music.

(That's the music that "traditionally" accompanies bad ass helicopter strafings")

THIS.

I had the same one and rode it to death.

I was waiting for the car to hit them as it was driving up the hill... no such luck, lol.

How can this be Project Badass without pyrotechnics?

2008-09-29 04:13:46 PM
Damn, that looks like hours of fun! I know have a goal... construct a big wheel... find downhill curvy roads!

2008-09-29 04:25:47 PM
That's not a big wheel. A big wheel didn't have a freewheeling front wheel, and if you got over 10 mph it would rip your feet off unless you took the 'death ride' and spread your legs out to the side.

OK, you guys' KITT Big Wheels are a whole new level of bad-ass.

I miss my KITT big wheel.

Senator, I served with a Big Wheel: I knew Big Wheels; Big Wheels were friends of mine. Senator, that's no Big Wheel.

I remember my Big Wheel looking a little bit less... hmmm... custom-built than the ones in the video.

2008-09-29 05:02:19 PM
I had a plain old normal Big Wheel. I would have killed for a KITT Big Wheel.

Does anyone remember a plastic toy you could ride that was sort of saucer shaped and had 2 big tall narrow wheels on each side? You could move them each indepentently with little handles, and a caster kept you from falling over.

I played with this at my grandmother's in the late 70s, so maybe an older Farker will remember such a device and tell me what it was called.

I keep that pic handy because this question comes up every few months.

Actually, considering this, you're probably up there also. The mind is the second thing to go.

Most Farkers seem to be bitter 23 year olds.

Anyway, I want to build a bigger one for Burning Man.

I had a knockoff, I don't remember what it was called. But it was blue, had a solid plastic big front wheel. The cool thing was that the front wheel had a rubber 'tire', a rubber strip all around the edge. This made the thing a lot faster than the Big Wheels that only had plastic front wheels, since the rubber grabbed the ground a lot better.

The only downside was that of course, over a period of time, the rubber band eventually broke when it degraded from use. Back then there was no after market for Big Wheel hopups, so I had to use it with only a plastic wheel- no fun since it was so much slower. It kicked ass while it lasted though.

Goddammit, I miss my Big Wheel. They were party to a many good memories I made as a kid.

Anyone remember some sort of commercial parody (on a TV show IIRC) with some sort of "big wheel" looking thing that had steering bars on the front and the back, that was supposed to be obnoxiously hard to ride?

Anyone? Anyone? Bueller?

2008-09-29 08:59:59 PM
Green Machine FTW!!! I got way better slides out of mine than anyone with a bigwheel.

I had one of the original metal frame Big Wheels when I was a kid in the 70s. That thing rocked. You could ride it down stairs with out bouncing to bad. I do not remember the free wheel though. It has been thirty years so who knows.

Oh my god, thank you for that. That dude flipping the pink barbie car is the funniest thing I've ever seen.

I bought my 6 yr old step-son one of those free-wheel big wheels last year for his birthday... I think I ride it more than he does =) Damn thing is just fun. Pretty decked out too, 3 piece crank, v-brakes, 20" front wheel (which you have to watch in really cranked drifts, will burn the shiat out of your inner knee/calf) and a small racing style seat that keeps your pretty planted in it no matter how fast or sideways you get. Hell now that I think about it, it even has shocks front and back although they only travel about an inch so mostly for looks I guess. I found it at a garage sale for $150 still new in the box, no idea where they got it though. Way more fun than the one I had when I was a kid.

/also had a kitt big wheel as a kid.

kikaku, you just redeemed this entire thread... i was reading each post carefully looking for a reference to the wacky action bike and up until the end, i was thoroughly disappointed... here's to you: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RpYty1PaZLM (new window)

though, i'll have to admit, i was expecting the subby's vid to end the exact same way...

/now only slightly disappointed

Over a span of many generations, the intellectual and emotional maturation of humans occurs later and later in life. Eventually, there will come a time when it's all jumpsies and pull-my-finger, all the time, extending well past the point in life where procreation is physiologically possible. Then it will be time for the bugs to rule.

BigG

Second only to the Sit and Spin for making small children drunker than sailors. Speaking of things you sit in and spin around, what happened to the Drunken Barrels at amusement parks? Disney has the Teacups but they have restrictors on them to keep you from going too fast. The last, best ones I ever road were at Opryland (RIP, shed tear). I got them spinning so fast it caused by 3 yr old daughter to pass out. We were spinning even before the ride started going, all of the sudden her eyes rolled back in her head and over she went. Good times.

/Did you spin clockwise or counter-clockwise?

2008-09-30 04:19:31 PM
I never had big wheels like that... when I was a kid (late 80's) me and my friends only had those extruded plastic ones. Use to ride them so hard that the hollow plastic tires would be worn down so much the plastic tread was gone and there were holes in the wheel that you could see into the interior. I would have kept riding it by my mom thought it was unsafe at that point.

/counter-clockwise

While that looked kind of fun, with that stretch of road and free time, you could have had a LOT more fun with a street luge, skateboard, or even a bike. Why the hell waste it looking like a douchebag trying to be 7 years old again?
