Sorry, P.J. Here's hoping for a speedy recovery. Your politics suck. But, you are one funny writer.

P.J. O'Rourke is an incredibly rare beast, one many thought must be extinct: a funny conservative.

Ah, P.J. O'Rourke. That magical being who can pen a book with the power to transform anyone who even glimpsed its cover on the shelf of a casual friend's summer house into a dyed-in-the-wool libertarian.

Bingo...

Hope he recovers quickly. Love his books.

My father went to high school with PJ O' Rourke in Toledo, OH, and was rewarded with a spot on the swim team in the National Lampoon's High School Yearbook.

I have, of all the inglorious things, a malignant hemorrhoid. What color bracelet does one wear for that?

Brown. Duh!

These. But don't let that stop you Bittermitter. I'm sure your Ebil Lieberul Action Figure Squad says just the right things for you to reply with the perfect quick and witty comeback when your play with your dolls at night before crying yourself to sleep thinking about where partisan politics and lowest common denominator pandering has gotten your party.

Sorry subby, I'm a liberal and I own all of PJ's books.

There are a lot of us who like him: he's genuinely funny, and we can laugh at ourselves since he isn't spewing saliva and frothing with rage at how 'evil' we are.

O'Rourke is a true conservative like Sullivan, and we can discuss things rationally with them.

/Hannity et al can still eat a bowl of dicks

Also, yes, I know Subby was just pandering to the Modgods himself with that headline. =p Actually, I rather admire how it manages to aim a zing at both sides of the aisle. Kudos. =)

As a liberal, I have a lot of respect for PJ. He is a true old school conservative, and holds opinions that are thoughtful and informed. He is a breath of fresh air compared to the WHARGHARRBLE of Neo-Conservative pundits and I have always enjoyed his work.

Get better, funnyman.

Humorist: a term used for people that aren't funny enough to be considered comedians.

Every O'Rourke piece I've ever read has made me say, "oh, that's funny," but it hasn't actually made me LOL. Meh.

patrick767: P.J. O'Rourke is an incredibly rare beast, one many thought must be extinct: a funny conservative.

Meh, I dunno. I liked O'Rourke for a long time (I even met the guy in 1990, he was very friendly and funny in person), but in the last eight years or so he seems to have lost a lot of his zip. I think part of it is that the "treat your politics like it's a football game" shtick was a lot more amusing when everybody wasn't doing it.

That, and that he's struggled with supporting Bush. On one hand Bush's background is everything PJ hates--Bush is the epitome of the "wiffle life" PJ tore apart so well--but on the other he can't just rip into him full force and still be taken seriously by conservatives. I've always thought PJ would have done a lot better to start pushing the libertarian line more in his writing, but sadly most of the dyed-in-the-wool libertarians I've met didn't care for him that much.

Anyway, I've laughed at PJ's older work more than I've laughed at any other political writing, so get well soon PJ.

(from TFA) But a universe without freedom would have been static and meaningless-the taxpayer-funded-art-in-public-places universe.

If that comment doesn't make your day, you have no day to make.
