(MSNBC)   Think American TV is bad? At least you don't watch TV in Europe or Japan. "In Germany, for instance, they have a hard time with humor -- producing their own, or appreciating humor from other countries"   (msnbc.msn.com) divider line 33

I don't know about that, Harold Schmidt did a great job of lifting Conan O'Brien's show. I have no clue if it's still on the air over there though.

I wouldn't make fun of the Germans. They'll march right into your country and stay for dinner. And three days later they'll just be hungry again.

I was in France recently and the only time I watched any TV was in Paris. I would usually turn it on in the morning before heading out and I noticed the Bill Dance fishing show on in English with sub-titles.

This could have been a hallucination brought on by a massive wine overdose.

Strange analysis. There are many comedy programmes and sitcoms on TV here, and House is currently the most successful show in Germany especially because of the humor.

What kind of lame country would appreciate humor from another country?

Years ago, German TV had this lame-ass game show called "Tutti Frutti," where the losing contestants had to strip off one piece of clothing at a time. I never did quite understand the point, but they did have these hot chicks who would strip every so often...wait, oh yeah.

I thought that was Italian. I remember that show. The girls had little bikinis that they could flip open. It used to carry the red dot at the bottom right corner of the screen. That of course meant stop what you're doing and watch.

Baldrick: I've heard what these Germans will do, Sir. They'll have their wicked way with anything of woman-born.

Edmund: Well, in that case, Baldrick, you're quite safe. However, the Teutonic reputation for brutality is well-founded: their operas last three or four days; and they have no word for `fluffy'.

Surool: Don't they run p0rn on regular TV in some of those countries?

I think Germany finally cleaned that up a few years ago. When I was there in January 2007, the only thing on regular TV that was sounding like it might be remotely pornographic came on after midnight. Didn't stay up long enough to find out.

I recently stayed in Marseille, France. For what it's worth, one TV station was nothing but German hardcore porn from about 10 at night to 6 in the morning. Not ENTIRELY cleaned up, but certainly not 24 hour free porn.

Germans dub all non-German flicks into their own language.

Apparently, they have a Sean Connery guy, a Harrison Ford guy, a...girl etc etc who do the voices in different films to keep continuity.

I found out when I did my James Bond Sean Connery impression and my German friend had no farking idea what I was doing.

Lazy bastards.

I, for one, think Japanese television is awesome.

Game shows that don't suck, celebrities acting and being treated like human beings rather than depraved demigods, and news media that talks about the news in a rational and sane manner, rather than sensationalized bullshiat about attention whores. It was very refreshing to have tabloid crap filtered out of The News and relegated to its own channel.

Plus the dramas were wacky fun.

/and during Golden Week, the whole news media breathlessly reports on just how overcapacity the train system is, for the amusement of all of the sensible people who stayed home to watch the news

Yup, your average German wouldn't know, say, John Cleese's voice. I pretty much hate the practice (I lived in Germany for a few years back when), but will confess that the German voice used for Bender (Futurama) was far superior to the US original, in my opinion.

And it's always interesting when the German voice actor dies, of course...

I love Japanese TV too, at least from what I watched there during my last visit and what gets brought here, but their news can be just as "OH NOES EVERYBODY PANIC" about stuff as much as US news can be. Though obviously not at the same frequency.
