I encountered these guys in Flagstaff last year. They managed to coerce twenty people into a library lecture room for their little seminar/sales pitch/brainwash session. I personally knew half the people there, but I was scared that they may have actually enticed ten people into hearing them speak.

The lecture was given by a creepy French husband and wife team. I don't really remember any of their doctrine. The blurb in the article pretty much sums up what I do remember. They were trying to get funding to build a temple in Flagstaff. Thankfully, no one bought any books or gave them money.

I wonder what the Farm-Aid baby will be called. Moon Unit and Dweezil are already taken.

Is the French scientific community so lax they let cult-members into their clone development areas? I think not.

Or at least I hope not.

Holy fark!! Now where the hell is Moon Unit and Dweezil from? It's just on the tip of my brain...goddamn I'm not getting any refs today

I hate to be a jerk...but repeat post.

Well, once you actualy manage to create a cloned fertilzed egg, the rest is just the application of 30 year old technology. Anyone with a fertility clinic could probably pull it off, after reading the science papers about cloaning.

It's not like building a nuke or fusion plant, which requires billions of capital. You really have all you need in a well-stocked bio lab.

That said, unless they figured out a way to 're-age' the DNA, they are probably going to create a farked up little girl :(

Great reference Zeb! To bad "every sperm is sacred" doesn't fit the bill here too.

Clonaid says the birth by Caesarean went well but there is no independent scientific confirmation the baby is a clone.

this is important, ya'll:)

This gets the Unlikely tag. Even if they have cloned a human (they haven't), I'm sure the U.S. Govt has done it already.
2002-12-27 03:13:12 AM
McWilly, you wouldn't be a jerk if you had read the comments alreay posted. It seems that Flibbertigibbet already pointed that out to us.

It's a girl?!? I wanted a mouce with teeth in its stomach!
2002-12-27 03:28:16 AM
I believe it has happened. It's just IVF with a little added extra work at the beginning. Provided you get the initial fertilisation right, the rest of it is just like any other IVF pregnancy....

and therein lies the issue.

No photos yet. I would have thought they'd be splashing piccies around everywhere by now.

Maybe they got the recipe wrong...

..and they ended up with Dennis Rodman.
2002-12-27 03:33:15 AM

Hooooly shiat.

I want one of THOSE for my birthday.

*grabs shotgun and goes looking for kittens*

I read a story over a year ago about a breakthrough in reproductive science which could make this a plausible article. A scientist found out that with a little help humans can acheive parthenogenesis in a lab setting. All you need is an ovum and another cell from either the egg donor or another human. Which all means that women don't need men anymore. We keep you because we like you.

Ironically, the female scientist who discovered this was trying to make it possible for men who don't, for whatever reason, produce sperm to reproduce, have their own natural children. She'll bring down the adoption industry one day.

Why can't they just leave the job to the alien Kaminoans from Episode 2?
2002-12-27 03:52:55 AM
This cries out for a "Scary" tag.

Frankly, I don't buy the whole "We'll use it for reproductive purposes!" argument. What kind of psycho wants to raise an identical copy of him/herself?

Old news, I saw these in Wal*Mart weeks ago.

"Well, once you actualy manage to create a cloned fertilzed egg, the rest is just the application of 30 year old technology. Anyone with a fertility clinic could probably pull it off, after reading the science papers about cloaning. "

It's more complicated than that. There is no 'fertilised' egg according to the stuff i've been reading, a single egg has the paired DNA injected, then the egg is forced to start cell division. From there on in it acts just like it got that second DNA strand from a sperm, and creates a zygote.

No male required, just like Pathenogenesis.

You guys better start being awful nice :P~

Sounds BS, but may have something to it. IIRC correctly, this was one of those "Lotsa kinky orgy sex and half your worldly possessions for clones and eternal salvation" sort of cults, but it was a very well funded one. They've got quite a few independently wealthy members.

Again, IIRC, they had a lab stocked with materials and doctors hidden mad scientist style in an old schoolhouse that the feds took seriously enough to shut down and make arrests over. I doubt they made a clone, but it's certainly not for lack of effort.
2002-12-27 04:05:50 AM
If the pay is good me and my right hand will spit out DNA samples all day. I won't wear any Nike loafers though.
2002-12-27 04:08:14 AM
Are you sure?
2002-12-27 04:12:14 AM
If my clone bobs on my knob, is that gay?
2002-12-27 04:21:25 AM

its evident you're gay just thinking about it.
