He is the most loving fuzzball on the face of the planet.

whiskeyinthejar: Makes me want to adopt. Again. We have no more room. But the ASPCA here is looking at euthanizing around 60% of their animals this year because of budget cuts. :(

Yeah, I know. It's gotten to be too big of a problem to do anything about- right now, just trying to home all the animals is like trying to bail out the ocean with a slotted spoon. It won't get better until people and communities get serious about spaying their farking pets. Luckily, where I live there is often a free spay/neuter clinic touring so those that can't afford to go to a vet, or people who want to spay a stray animal, can get it done.

I wish I could adopt more, but I'm already maxed out with 2 cats and a dog in the apartment. When my guy and I get a house I'm going to build a cat enclosure so we can take in more creatures.

I'll admit that I didn't want a black dog when I was looking to adopt. I just thought it would be depressing; black isn't a very uplifting color, and because my dog had just died, I wanted a dog that would cheer me up. It was a simple as that.

I found Casey tho, a black lab mix, realized I was thinking like a moran, and have never looked back. She's the best dog evar.

Black dogs are much more difficult to photographmake eye contact with - their eyes blend in with the color of their fur, so it's difficult for someone looking for a dog on the Internet to feel a connection

Sadly. Though just as wonderful doggies those that catch the potential adopter's eyes.

I'm just in this thread to be a masochist. I want a dog so bad, but the bf is allergic and the landlord says no.

And I seem to be a friendly stray magnet. 3 cats and 2 dogs with flea collars and well behaved but no tags in the past month have been outside my building, begging to be brought inside.

When I went to the Humane Society to get Dave, they told us up front they wouldn't let us have any black cats, as it was so close to Halloween. Same rule with rabbits and Easter. People get them for the seasonal novelty, then forget about them.

The Power of Positive Drinking: I think having a black cat would be awesome. All the neighborhood kids would stay off your lawn because you might be a witch.

I had a black cat growing up...she was gorgeous. I haven't adopted another black cat, because I'm not sure my heart could handle it. Anyway, during Halloween, she would sit at the top of the stairs and stare at the trick-or-treaters. She always got a reaction. It was very amusing.

dumpstergirl: Sumpinlikedat: Il Douchey: Why is discrimination ok when it comes to adoption?

Because when it comes to adoption, most people would rather see a family with a kid that 'matches' because they're less likely to have strife that way.

I could see that, except a lot of these people are happy to have an Asian baby, just not a black one. My aunt was like this- it really pissed me off. She was talking about going to China to adopt a little girl. When I asked why she didn't just get a kid here, she said the only ones she could get without a waiting list are black. She doesn't think of herself as racist at all. When I tell her an Asian kid is just as obviously adopted as a black child, she's like "uhm... pancakes." These are sweet, innocent, less than 2.5 year old children we are talking about. I just don't get it, I guess.

You don't need to "get it". It's somebody else's personal decision. It doesn't concern you.

Oh, that's a cute pup. I'm glad you got him before he went to the big sleep.

My dog use to belong to a neighbor. He bought her for his fiance'. The couple broke up a few weeks later and the neighbor put the dog on the streets. The dog had to live by taking eggs from a farmer down the street. I took her in. That was 5 years ago. She's a sweet heart, and she knows it.

If your girlfriend likes dogs and wants to have them, and just can't because of the allergies, she can fix that. When I went in to the allergist for migraines I found I was allergic to cats (in addition to the big triggers.) I took allergy shots with the cat serum in it (among other things) for a while and it's pretty much gone. My sensitivity to cat dander was almost negligible in a matter of months. Which is good, because I'd never give up my little fluffy creatures. They can do this for dog as well (or dust, mold, cedar...).

He's attempted the desensitivity thing before and it didn't work so well (mostly because its his allergy induced asthma that's the big problem). But we know he's not allergic to cats or terriers (low dander). Yet, no pets yet. He claims the cost and the fact that our landlords are kinda one of his clients, so he doesn't want to make them mad.

I'll wear him down yet. I'm only on step one of my cunning plan. I'm very persuasive.

Black animals are hard to adopt out. I wouldn't call it "racism" (even though some ppl call EVERYTHING "racist"). I don't know if it is superstition (especially on the part of cats) or what the reason is. Having volunteered at the Fredericksburg SPCA for 2 1/2 years I see black kitties (even kittens) that people just do not want. Even ones with the sweetest dispositions are hard to find homes for. This kitty (http://search.petfinder.com/petnote/displaypet.cgi?petid=10504186) is my favorite; she comes out of her kennel onto my shoulder and loves to snuggle. She has been there since April, awaiting a good home.
If you don't have a pet adopt one from your local shelter!

I have found that passive aggressive works very well. It's quick, and it's fun! It sounds like that's what he's doing with you: "don't want to make people mad... or it cost too much for allergy shots". Turn it around and make it work to your advantage.

Be warned... it will either wear him down or run him off.

Good luck though. I hope you get you pet. :)

Welcome to my world. My partner doesn't want any kind of pet. He has no time for a dog. Cats are "stupid and they don't do anything and they run away when (he) tries to pet them!" Chinchillas and guinea pigs and bunnies are "weird." Birds are "weird." And fish aren't an option? Oh, and no turtles either.

My cat is black. She and her litter (all black) were rescued from a dumpster and brought right to us. They were filthy with fleas, and had apparently been doused with used motor oil, because it took three (3) baths before we could pet them without brown guck rubbing off. We found an excellent home for her sister right away, but her brother had to go to the humane society.

We've never had a more affectionate pet. She's the first feline I've ever known to like being hugged.

What's scary, is I would believe it. My pup was born on a farm, but the original owners gave her up when she attacked a chicken (when she was the tender age of 4 mo.). She bounced around the shelters and pounds for about four months until I saw her and fell in love. Her name is Suzy Q. If you've ever heard the song "Suzanne" by Weezer, you know why I spelled it with a Z.

Dog lovers don't want black dogs. This is not surprising. They are in fact racists, but that is not the end of the story.

Dog lovers in general are delusional. This explains why a pitbull can rip the face off of a two year old and idiots will defend the pitbull.

Dog lovers are in fact racist, but they are also mentally deranged.

I'm not saying everyone who has a dog is crazy, but there is a huge minority who are loony.

2008-09-28 10:25:39 PM
All other things aside (meaning the fact that black is the most common color of a lab and labs are very common dogs so also very common in shelters and the fact that dogs don't have races), it is interesting that black haired dogs have white skin normally and white haired dogs have black skin (gray really), so even if it were "racism" it would be against white skinned dogs, haha.

Impudent Domain: Il Douchey: In the people adoption world people are racist.

Try saying you don't want to hire a brown person or a female, try saying you don't want to rent to an old or handicapped person...Outrage. But specify that you are only interested in adopting a white male in good health and under 6 months, and nobody bats an eye. Why is discrimination ok when it comes to adoption?

A lot of it is due to the prejudices of the adoption agencies. My wife and I have been trying to adopt for a while. The state tried very hard to steer us away from adopting either a black or Hispanic child. We told them we had no preferences, nevertheless, I got a new case worker, and just the other day she called to introduce herself and stated that my file said interested white adoption.
BTW, every single worker with child protective services here is either black or Hispanic and they are all female, at least every one I ever met.

/THey also suck and don't help you

I have given up with them and I am trying for international adoption.

We adopted two hispanic girls through CPS in Harris County, TX. We are as white as Canadian businessmen. They'll do it, you just have to get the right caseworker. I wish you the best!

With kitties, the personalities seem to be fairly consistently whatever color they are.

Orange kitties are pretty much even keeled. My vet said he's never met a mean orange kitty.
White kitties tend to be particular... but absolutely adore pne person. A lot like a woman... awesome if you're on their good side.
Bengals are loud and get in your face. Very energetic and needy.
Black kitties are attention whores. My black kitties have always acted like THEY are my boyfriend, not my husband.
Grey tabbies... I don't know yet.. I haven't have any of them.

I didn't want it to be that way, but kitties I've had that never met the predecessors, and they act just like them. It's weird.

You want a cat who always wants to be in your lap being worshiped... get a black cat.

I wonder if dogs follow a similar thing or if it's all breed.

In the world of animal rescue, they call this phenomenon Black Dog Syndrom

Well, I suppose all of those people who suffer from White Guilt Syndrome will now be adopting all of the big black dogs to shows us all how open-minded they are.

Guilt can be a powerful thing regardless of whether or not it is real or manufactured.....

The only thing I can think of is, 2 of the 3 "big black dogs" i can think of, have a reputation for being mean:
Dobermans, and rottweilers

The other I can think of offhand is black lab, which are AWESOME dogs, my mom has one. I'm not a fan of big dogs but I'd take a lab in a heartbeat (or a german shepard, or husky).

Oh yeah, rottweilers aren't all that mean, and dobermans are one of the smartest dog breeds, I'd take either of those, but not in my small apartment.

A friend of mine had a rotweiller, and being as it was a farm dog and used for working she was not spayed. She mated with the farmer down the way's black lab, and puppies came forth.

My *god* those were gorgeous dogs. They looked like labs, but had the stockiness of the rotties, and fur so black it looked blue. Absolutely gorgeous animals. I wanted one so bad but at the time we could not have one. :-(

I want a rottie or rottie mix in the future, and I certainly wouldn't turn down a black dog. That said, this "big black dog" syndrome is very well documented.

Kinda off subject, but...

When we picked out our two kittens from the Humane Society, they were part of a two-litter combined group. The entire group was orange and white kittens with faint stripes.... except for a grey tiger with white belly and a tuxedo cat. Strangely, we were told that the two oddballs could be ours as no one had put dibs on them. We thought it was odd, as the orange ones all looked the same, but everyone wanted the plain-looking ones.

As the orange ones filled their faces with grub, the tuxedo (soon to be Monty) reached out through the bars and gently tugged at my boyfriend's pants leg with his tiny claws. He had apparently chose us too. He, and his brother, George, are now 20 lbs. each and sound like horses running through the house.

Ironically, we took in an orange and white cat a few years back.... until we could find her a home. She's still here.
