Why the "strange" tag? Of course they're angered. -1 subby for missing the obvious.

2008-09-28 05:24:12 PM
Do you mean Eskimos, subby?

2008-09-28 05:25:12 PM
Those mining companies shouldn't go there if they don't speak the native language. I thought that was the rule.

2008-09-28 05:25:22 PM
Quinn will fix THAT.

2008-09-28 05:25:50 PM
Just on the radio, it seems. Which makes a certain amount of sense.

If the company tries to outlaw the language completely, that's a different issue.

Business should be conducted in the conducted in the language of Canada. Canadian.

You mean the English speaking people? Because it sure seems like the Inuit have a better claim to speaking the original language of Canada.

Why can't we force people to speak English in the United States?

WTH? I understand if they have to communicate to an english speaker in English, but why can't they talk to each other?

What if their english isn't so hot? They're just supposed to use made-up sign language to each other?

/didn't rtfa

Martin Bergeron, Agnico-Eagle's general manager for Western Canada and Nunavut, said the company strives to be respectful of Inuit language and culture, along with the many other cultural backgrounds that converge at the Meadowbank site.

"If you go at the kitchen or cafeteria area, for example, you will hear a mixture of languages. People are enjoying themselves in their own language and are comfortable," Bergeron said.

"We do not stop people from using their own language. We want, for safety reasons, to make sure that people use a common language - English - when on the worksite."

I see absolutely nothing wrong with this policy. But hey, if the Inuits don't want to follow that rule, we can send up some Mexicans who would take those jobs..........oh, wait.

" Lo siento, no hablan Inglés "

If they don't want to speak English, why don't they cross back across the Bering land bridge and go back to where they came from?

I totally doubt English will be the main language of English-speaking parts of Canada in the future. Consider I listen to Arabic, Korean and Chinese more often when I visit Toronto for a day.

Just give 'em a few blankets. That usually solved the problem.

Okay, so after rtfa, I can see why there's an issue.

If it is just over the radios, for safety reasons, that makes sense.
As long as workers won't get written up for chatting in their language as they walk down the hall together, or something.

2008-09-28 05:54:23 PM
You want to emigrate here you can learn to... oh, wait.

2008-09-28 05:54:40 PM
Did anyone even read the article?

It just says the mining company wants people to use a single language for radio communications for safety reasons. Sounds about right to me.
Everyone can use any language they want for anything else.

This is a non-story. It's the same thing with airline pilots and virtually any industry where safety and communications are important.

You can speak whatever language you want while chatting, but when using official lines of communication as it relates to a job, you need to speak a language that everyone understands.

There is no point in a handful of Inuits calling for help because a mine has collapsed if most of the people listening in won't understand what you're saying.

I think the main difference is Spanish speakers that come here immigrate. English speakers that are already here are conquerors. When you lose a war, bad shiat happens. Get the Spaniards to learn the King's English!

/why spanish speakers have so much 'pride' in speaking it is beyond me; its your slave/conquerors language. You want some real pride, relearn your native languages.
//looks forward to one world, one language. Don't care which one it is. Even if its Spanish lol.

If it relates to the job, you do what The Man says or go find another job. The Man sez speak English. End of discussion. Back to work.
