The current Pope is an inspiring man. Let's hope his message is heard.

2002-12-26 03:49:23 PM
I love it. Cynical FARKers oppose any mention of organized religion or just laugh at it's absurdity when it's against, say, a crappy violent movie or a lame violent videogame or butt sex or whatever suddenly get a "hero" tag article posted because he's against Bush on this whole war thing.

He (the Pope) doesn't have to worry about Saddam's regime because there is not a Catholic left alive in Iraq and gas is already insanely expensive in Europe.

The default position of any world religious leader when they have nothing to lose is "peace".

Does it occur to any of you guys that if left unchecked, Saddam and the rest of the loonies who own/run countries in the Middle East will kill all the Jews and Christians who live there, then hold the entire world (not just the US) hostage for oil?

I am all for alternate sources of energy and all that, but for now, the west needs oil. and that's where it's at. So that region needs artificial stability.

There appear to be plenty of cynical Farkers right here. What thread have you been reading?

I am glad that you have made the connection that the war is all about oil. All this boring talk about weapons of mass distruction or terrorism was hardly credible.

We are plowing ahead in the face or world opinion, with a war in which thousands will lose their lives, in order to get oil.

For some reason, the pope, that lunatic, opposes this.

I seriously doubt Saddam will kill Christians and Jews just because they're Christians and Jews. He's a secular leader, he's about as muslim as a pork chop. I'm of the opinion he gasses the kurds not because they are christian, but because they want their own country. Of course, I haven't talked to the old boy in years, we used to hang, but we just kinda grew apart, you know how it is, so I could be wrong. But anyway, I worry about Saddam like I worry about Polio. Now North Korea and the militant islamists from the REST of the middle east, they're a clusterfark of a different color.

anyway - go Pope, ya dropped the ball on the molestation thing, glad to see you're on for the anti-war thing.

HeartBurnKid I don't think he would have been a big supporter of the axis in WWII since he personally was forced into labor camps by nazi's...

Come on folks, it's the pope - mr. peace. Do you think he will come out with "bomb the hell out of 'em"?

ahum

according to EPPC.org (who's actual credibility I have NO idea about), Catholics make up 1/2 of the world's 2 billion christians -> and the Pope, is head of the Catholic church, and to some devout catholics, God's representative on earth (I don't buy that myself, but then again, I'm not catholic, I'm episcopalien, episcopelian.. epis... uhh. C. of E., we believe that Whiskey is God's representative on earth.)
anyway. so the what the Pope says has the potential to influence the opinion of 1 BILLION people.

yes, his opinion is absolutely worthless.

I love those church bulliten boards. Little bits of asinine morality as you drive down the street.

I'm thinking of starting a coffee table book.

2002-12-26 04:15:44 PM
Hey all you pro-war loonies, why don't YOU join up the Army and get shot in the guts wherever-the-fark Dubya tells you to go next in order to save a few cents on oil prices? Iraqi mass-destruction weapons is a hoax. That's blatantly obvious to anyone. In other news a few headlines back, Iraq, which is anything but a theocracy like Afganistan, has 1.2 million Christians - probably not Catholics, but Christians nonetheless.

Anyway, how come some folks get all so worked up over an already militarily neutered dude, 10000 miles away, who does NOT have MMDs or poses any threat to the US, and you ridicule the Pope for not supporting killing tens of thousands (including thousands of Americans) in order to save some pennies on oil prices (which would already be down thanks to increased Russian exports or if Iraq would be allowed to sell more).

Maybe if Bush would outlaw SUVs we wouldnt have to go to war. OR hey maybe we should just pay 2 to 4 bucks a gallon like most countries, its only fair.
Wait a minute! Im an American! KILL THE OILY RAGHEADS!!!

I seriously doubt Saddam will kill Christians and Jews just because they're Christians and Jews.

Well, I say he will. What basis for your "serious doubt" do you have? Much of his constituancy, including some of his advisors and staff are loony fundy Muslims. These type of guys keep killing Jews and Christians just 'cause.

But maybe Saddam will not (mostly because there are not a whole bunch of Jews or Christians in Iraq). However, again, if left unchecked, he would certainly condone this behavior and ally himself with those who are doing the killing. And if you argue that the rest of the Muslim Arab world will suddenly become tolerant of other faiths just because Bush lays off Saddam, you are definitly in the "glass half full" category. You make Mickey Rooney look like Abe Vigoda.

He knows which side his bread's buttered on. And he will certainly take part in the inevitable war on Israel.

Then the insane fundy "Muslims" will either:

a)take him out for being an infidel (I am aware he is not a practicing Muslim) or

b) keep him around as a token secular leader to show the world that they are tolerant of other beliefs.

Then they will hold the entire world hostage for oil. See how against Bush the "moron" and the war you are when gas is $9.00 a liter (no more gallons for you, decadent American pig!!) and terrorist murders of innocent Americans are weekly, not once in a lifetime, events.

This is a scary time in the world and despite all well meaning anti war sentiments, sometimes war, or the threat of war, is the only way to solve a situation. Only a psycho wants to kill a nice doggy, but when the doggy gets rabid, someone has to shoot the f*cker.

In response to those of you who think that despising the catholic church because of they are bunch of short dick pedos is shallow, if I EVER found that anyone, including Popey Dopey, had ever molested on of my children, he's a dead motherfuqer. And just how the hell did he help end any conflicts? Theres no way he could have. He has no military force, he has no real influence on anything, the worst he can do is lay a guilt trip on you for (GASP!) SINNING. He's nothing. He's sh!t. He doesn't even have the balls to lay the smackdown on his own corrupt organization for feeling up children that trust(ed) these sick old fuqs. If you want to have sex, the fuq the priesthood, and go have sex, don't repress it until the best you can do is take advantage of trusting children.

Iraq, which is anything but a theocracy like Afganistan, has 1.2 million Christians - probably not Catholics, but Christians nonetheless.

Link please? If true, I stand corrected.

Do you really know weapons status of Iraq? I'll bet if we back completely out of the middle east, as some of you guys seem to think we should, Israel would be crushed instantly. Due to the fact that they are a Jewish nation. And Islam, in general, is a pretty aggressive religion as these things go. Christians and Jews would be in real trouble without the US presence in the ME.

I am not a loony, by the way, and I am also not pro war. Nobody but a psycho wants war, but history teaches us....oh forget it. It's like talking to a wall.

Um....actually the pope DOES have a good bit of influence. The majority of christians in the world are catholic, and he helped fight for polish independence( that's why he's pope).

I'm glad you included the phrase "IF" in your sentence: if you argue that the rest of the Muslim Arab world will suddenly become tolerant of other faiths just because Bush lays off Saddam, you are definitly in the "glass half full" category. You make Mickey Rooney look like Abe Vigoda.

I never argued that, and you're not going to get anywhere setting up straw men and knocking em down.

but let me pose a question: do you believe that the rest of the Muslim world will cease and desist with the terrorist attacks if we dispose of Saddam? I do not believe that they will, and furthermore, I do not think he is a serious threat because, being a secular leader, I'm willing to bet he'll only get as involved as is necessary in the "inevitable war against Isreal", just enough for the bread-butterers to keep their attention elsewhere.

Nope, when I think of serious threat, I think of hardcore wahhabi muslims who would kill me for purely ideological reasons. And I'll gladly be the one to drop the hammer on them if and when it becomes necessary.

I think you have confused me with a terrorist apologist sir, but just because I do not advocate war with Iraq does NOT mean I'm willing to roll over and apologize for real and tangible threats to my nation. I just don't think that Saddam is one.

At some point perhaps he had a mild influence but now the US is going to give a collective "YAH RIGHT" to him about this. Maybe one day he was influential, hell even Strom Thurmond was at some point
but now he just needs to take his whole message and wipe his chin with it...like Strom Thurmond.
In 100 years the world will either have no religion, or it will be destroyed because of it.

You are right. I did lump you in there. My apologies. And I agree about the way more scary nature of idealogical terrorists. Gives me goddamn chills.

You make some good points, and we will just see how everything goes, I guess, but here is what I predict:

Despite our threats to the contrary, we do not go to war with Saddam. I think this is a tactic. And I think that all politicians, including Bush, run their foreign policy based on polls of idiots like me and my neighbors. I think the last undeclared war that anyone gets away with was Clinton's Kosovo mess. But he's a Democrat and a good public speaker, so he can hardly be held reponsible for those massacres.

The super-evil terrorists will be coddled, as they have been in the past, by the Arab Muslim world. These dudes will turn on you faster that crap if you show signs that you are not in support of their vision. Retribution against a percieved traitor is nasty and painful and everybody knows it, so they will be funded and supported quietly. This will eventually lead to one of them (either an individual or a entity with several members) coming to hold real power. This entity will frame it's acts in some benign, defensive idealogy that will convince a lot of people that it is being forced to kill babies and women.

Yasser Arafat is a good example of this kind of a-hole getting to power. One of these people is going to get a hold of some nuclear/chemical/bio weapons sooner or later, and after Israel is destroyed to the last baby, we will be next.

2002-12-26 05:05:24 PM
It doesn't matter what the Pope says. The American government has been working on their anti-Iraq propaganda for a year now and aren't going to be stopped by the Pope. Dubya would look like a pussy to the world if he didn't take Saddam down.

And you don't want to end up like your Dad do you Dubya?

2002-12-26 05:10:22 PM
Things are looking up. I hear Iran is oulawing stoning as a means to punish adultry. The old law said stonings should take place in the following manner.

"Under Iran's strict Islamic law, in place since the 1979 Islamic revolution, men and women convicted of adultery are normally sentenced to death by stoning. The condemned are buried in a pit -- men up to their waists, women their armpits -- and pelted with stones.

According to the law, the stones must be big enough to injure but not kill with just a few blows. If the victim manages to dig themselves out then they are acquitted."

Those fun loving Iranians. Give the guy a shot at digging out from the waist, the woman, well let's just say the woman aint getting a pass.

Craven, sick bastards.

On a side note, does anyone else find it mildly ironic that some of the right-wingers here hate the catholic church, quite possibly the most 'right' church of all?

2002-12-26 05:14:03 PM
robbiefal and ironbar

OK, so the pope signed treaties with Fuhrer and Duce. So did England, France, Poland and the SU. Big deal.

The pope´s encyclica (sp?) "Mit brennender Sorge" was a clear stance against Nazism. Everybody with an inkling of knowledge has heard of it.

And what concerns ole Adolf´s words about nazism not being an enemy to christianity: Well ironbar, if *Adolf* says it it must be true ...

The pope Pius XII was severely criticized by the generation of 68, which was - in a nutshell - a bunch of worthless liberals. 'Nuff said.
