lol, you'd also think an orthopedic surgeon could identify a human foot.

I loved the headline subby but on a serious note:

A bear paw looks very similar to a human foot, more so if it's decayed or simply skeletal matter. Many forensic courses, especially in areas where there are bears and large expanses of nature always drill this into students since what may be human remains found in the hills or the woods are in reality nothing more than the paw of a bear or other wild animal and vice versa. I've gotten to play with both human skeletal remains and those of a bear and let me tell you that either one can pass for the other especially to the untrained eye or barring further scrutiny.

It took me a second to get that the headline was a donut joke. Whatever bearclaws are, we must call them something else around here.

Nice subby.

I used to live in Alabama. The cops in my hometown could not only identify a bearclaw when they saw one, they could probably tell you what store it came from while wearing a blindfold.

I ran across a nice little .pdf about it for those who may be curious, with pictures and x-ray. I gotta' admit, I likely wouldn't be able to tell them apart either.

Years ago at a butchershop I work at, I looked in a scrap barrel and saw little skun out childrens hands. of course I freaked out and called in my boss. He took a look and then told me that his taxidermist friend needed to get rid of some scraps that he had forgotten to get rid of at his house. They of course were bear paws.

a skun out bear hanging in a cooler looks incredibly like a human hanging there.

Wow, that is pretty similar.

So was it just a cub paw for it to be mistaken for a child's foot? It'd have to be a small paw, right?

That is amazing. The second photo looks enough like a human hand I could see how someone could mistake it for human. Or a bigfoot.

claws like nails usually fall off with decomposition, especially if they were found out in the woods where critters chew, play or mess with them.
