That certainly brightened my Christmas!
2002-12-25 12:54:03 PM
now if we could only get an article on the fall of the golden age of christmas lights, and the rise of my next door neigbors all putting 200,000 lights up in random ugly ass patterns just to have more lights than anyone else. With all the elctricity my block uses, we could feed an entire african village... umm, that is if they could eat electricity.

Does this help explain the Griswold's display?

There is nothing on Fark I want to talk about now. I propose a threadjacking. Any suggestions as to the topic matter?

What is a good PS2 game to buy this holiday season?

Let's have a Fark tree burning party. Every Farker in North America can send a tree to Drew and then he can set the match!

/flame bait?

As far as a thread-jacking, how about everyone helps me? Since the majority of Farkers are very computer literate, here's my problem:

I've got Dell with a Pentium IV, and the baseline speaker system. However, my subwoofer picks up a country music station (faintly), and when the speakers are on, the make a crackling sound reminiscent of vinyl, or a fire with extremely dry wood. Anybody want to save me the trouble of calling the eggheads at Dell?

it sucks to be at work on christmas... not b/c its christmas, but b/c i'm at work and everyone I know isn't
2002-12-25 01:41:36 PM
I'm at work too. My job is quazi-customer service, and in the 4 and a half hours I've been here, I have had 0 phone calls. GAWD... midnight mass then into work at 6:00am. This blows.

So if we are going to jack a thread, lets talk about worst Christmas song ever... My vote is White Christmas as it is an obviously racist song masked by the "fact" that the northern part of the US has a chance of snow. Anyone else?
2002-12-25 01:45:23 PM

Worst Christmas song: any of those on a Chipmunks album.

And for anyone not stuck at work, "Best in Show" is on HBO Comedy East right now.

The American Eveready Company tried to patent their lighting strings, but were unable to, as when the company's patent applications were presented to the United States Patent and Trademark Office for consideration, the courts decided that the socket sets were "based on common electrical knowledge" and not actually a new invention. It was not long after the decision was handed down that several companies began offering lighting sets of their own, and the American electric Christmas lighting industry was born.

Its really too bad these guys retired....back when the patents actually made days you could get that patent through with no problems....

I love that movie. The yuppie copule is the best by far.

Chipmunks Christmas was pretty awful. Has anyone heard Jack Johnson's version of rudolf the red nosed reindeer? If you like Jack, it's a great little song.

Not nessacarity a christmas song, but "Wiggly Safari (Starring The Crocodile Hunter, Steve Irwin)" I'll bet is on awful album. If only he had David Hasslehoff on vocals, with Kathy Lee backing, we'd have the worst.album.ever

We've got the old bubble lights and we put them up every year. It seems that a few don't work every time we get them out, but so far, we've still got a complete set. Very cool.

but is everyone who's working today making good $$? that helps take the edge off a bit...

i'm making double time and a half all day. $40-some/hour to sit here on fark. ok.
2002-12-25 02:00:12 PM
I am on salary, so I'm making the same $ as I would any other day... Merry Farking Christmas

that hurts.

I think you should spend 2 hours talking to Dell reps, reinstalling, rebooting, etc.

Then you should just replace the cable from the computer to the speakers, because it has a short in it.

But be sure to restart/reinstall first, just for practice.

Ah..sweet, sweet I love thee.

Thanks Kyo!

Rumbleminz: My parents' Dell speakers make the same crackling noise. I haven't had a chance to hook up substitute speakers to the system for troubleshooting but I suspect that the power amp in the sub is hosed. Their's is the baseline sound system also.
2002-12-26 12:23:17 AM

The radio signal and the crackling are two different matters. First of all are the speakers and all computer components on either a UPS or at least a high-quality power conditioner? The radio is likely coming in through the power cord. You can get coils to go on the wires at radio shack. Cheap fix if it works.

Crackling is usually caused by a bad capacitor. Not good news since those things are transistorized now. B0rg9 is right. Dell will likely warranty it. How old is the unit?
A P4 must be pretty new.

I just saw the comment from Kyosuke. Very bright.

Rumbleminz: Yeah try replacing the cable too. it could have a combo short/poor shielding.

Kyosuke very smart man. *bows deeply*

Best Xmas song ever:

Christmas is Coming Twice this Year by the Holleytones.

It's on one of the Dr. Dimento CDs. Most excellent, dudes and dudettes.
