I for one approve of advances in personal propulsion technology!

However, 55 kilos total weight including fuel? That's a glider assisted by jet for 20 seconds more than anything.

Article fails to mention that this is the 3rd attempt.

Previous efforts included the exciting sounding, rocket powered rollerskates that took him safely over the channel, but wouldn't stop in time and he ended up completing the words fastest circumnavation shortly before stopping, mid air, over a cliff with a surprised expression on his face.

Previously, the cross channel trip was tried using a giant catapult. Prior to this incident, Yves Rossy was actually 6 foot 6. Due to a tragic miscalculation when working out the firing arc of said catapult, he is now only a meager 2 foot tall.

Thats all folks.

I will now read the special vows which Homer has prepared for this occasion. Do you, Marge, take Homer, in richness and in poorness? Poorness is underlined. In impotence and in potence? In quiet solitude or blasting over the English Channel in a jet-powered, monkey navigated... and it goes on like this...

I don't care if the weather has taken a turn, I feel we should be Eugen him on. Maybe if we ask him Gneisenau he'll change his mind. I mean, you people are talking like he is Cerberus to fail.

they aired that live on national geographic today including the weather check and the cancelation notice. I plan on watching it tomorrow. That looks interesting and I expect it to appear in spy movies in no time (even if its just the concept and CGI) much like the "rocket belt" appeared in thunderball (omitting its 30 second flight time of course :)

From TFA: Thursday's trip is meant to trace the route of French aviator Louis Bleriot, the first person to cross the Channel in an airplane 99 years ago.

So he's going to crash into a field next to Dover Castle?

Bleriot only JUST made it. Although to be fair, the cliffs are a fair bit higher than the sea. And Bleriot didn't start 8,000ft up.

Saw an original Bleriot* flying a few months ago at Rhinebeck. It's amazing that Bleriot made it.

*It's been rebuilt so many times that only a few original parts remain, but those rebuilds used the same materials.

Maudite: Would be more impressive if he do it without jumping out of a plane.

This. Especially as the trailers showed him standing on top of the cliffs with his wings on, which kind of implied that was going to be his starting point.

Well, seeing that there are NO high cliffs near the channel, I highly doubt that he could do that.
And he probably could start off the ground, but he wouldn't be able to climb to a safe height when the fuel runs out and he has to deploy his parachute.
It's mostly a matter of security.

Wingsuit flying is fantastic, I'd love to give that thing a try
