Nope, can't be him. We already have evidence for him dreaming in Ry'leh .

I've gotta imagine that something like this would explain how some ships have vanished without a trace.

Buh bye buoyancy.

I've tried to get a half dozen Lovecraft themed headlines greenlit so I'm glad to see somebody got one through the gate.

Methane gas bubbles are a common theory put forward for ship disappearances.

/R'lyeh is in Antarctica though
//cyclopean for the win

Ok, articles like this piss me off because it tries to say it is a huge climate threat but at the very end says this

"It is likely that methane emissions off Svalbard have been continuous for about 15,000 years - since the last ice age - but as yet no one knows whether recent climactic shifts in the Arctic have begun to accelerate them to a point where they could in themselves exacerbate climate change, he said."

So, its not that they are new formed but that they have just been discovered and some people only guess that maybe it's possibly being accelerating. God damn hippies.

flagnut: So, its not that they are new formed but that they have just been discovered and some people only guess that maybe it's possibly being accelerating. God damn hippies.

And then the previous paragraph again please...

FTFA: "Professor Westbrook said the area surveyed off the west coast of Svalbard was very different to the area being studied by the Russian vessel because the water was much deeper and does not have a layer of permafrost sealing the methane under the seabed."

Now I know you wingnuts are excellent selective readers, but please, try to notice more than just the single paragraph that satisfies you.

Yes, I should have been more specific - nearer Antarctica, as opposed to the Arctic. This is what I get for drinking and farking.

Oh wow. I iamgine that the methane was always under the permafrost, but the permafrost was thick enough to keep it down. now that the permafrost is melting because of global warming, the methane is breaking through. the methane could potentially accelerate the warming in the arctic. And then...whatever is supposed to happen when the frost is gone. Maybe an army of Valkyrie yaks descends from the North tripping balls on a methane induced hallucination of yak apocalypse.

Methane vents don't strike me as anything particularly unusual. There's a lot of rotting algae in the sea and it makes sense that pockets of it would form

Methane vents? BOTTLE DAT SHIAT duh

If you had to speak through a face full of tentacles, you probably too would have some pronunciation problems.

Unless you're a Japanese schoolgirl, then everything would come out high-pitched and sound annoying

Wow, heres something I'd never thought I'd need to do... *pulls out copy of "The Cthulhu Mythos Encyclopedia" (new window)*...

Yep, there it is on page 225 - "Ph'nglui mglw'nafh Cthulhu R'leyh wgah'nagl fhtagn. - Rough phonetic rendering of R'lyehian phrase often spoken in the rites of Cthulhu. It may be translated as "In his house at R'leyh dead Cthulhu waits dreaming."

First off, this is one long sentence.

"It is likely that methane emissions off Svalbard have been continuous for about 15,000 years - since the last ice age - but as yet no one knows whether recent climactic shifts in the Arctic have begun to accelerate them to a point where they could in themselves exacerbate climate change, he said. "

Second of all, he said "Exacerbate!"
