Myrdinn: Or all the foreign investors will pull out of America's finicial position, and we'll have a long overdue nasty correction right into a depression.

When they call to collect, we just don't answer if we don't recognize the number on our caller ID. Worked for me for years.

can someone explain why 700$ is controversial, and why a guy who i assume cannot do simple math explaining this?

Supposed to be $700 Billion, and the muppet is doing so because the grown up voices tell him to.

Y2Jericho: John_From: Y2Jericho: Silly McCain. Obama doesn't need to show up for work in Washington. He can text his vote of "Present" while on the road.

What work? Congress is focusing on writing the slickest speech they can to make you 'feel ok' about the bailout.

Obama might as well focus on his campaign. There is no place for him in congress with these criminals.

My interpretation is this bailout has next to no support so I'm not following your slick speech from Congress.

Let's take our chances and let it fall to the ground. It'll fix itself eventually, RIGHT!?

The bailout WILL PASS with zero doubt in my mind. This is because the people pulling the strings on our country need it to pass. Certain members of congress (Mccain) and the President are on the take for the investment banks. The FBI is just learning the tip of the iceberg.

If the meltdown happens it would be the best economic event in our lifetime (ever?) for the poor and the middle class in America.

But don't worry, no meltdown of the current system is going to happen.

Obama rocking McCain right now:

"No need to infuse Washington with presidential campaigning politics at this delicate time. I will be available if they need me."

"Presidents are going to have to do more than one thing at a time..."

absolutben: What if the roles were reversed? What if Obama wanted to suspend his campaign to work on the economic crisis? What would most of you be saying then?

People on Fark would say "All glory to Obama, the holy man who seeks to save us from our $700 billion fallout, praise him, praise him"

Meanwhile the realists would know that Obama isn't that great without cue cards (rememeber the primary debates), and that he's trying to avoid the debates.

Meanwhile the realists who look at McCain will say this is his "weak" issue, and he's trying to show leadership in it.

If I was Obama I'd let him do it and if nothing came out of it Obama could say you have no solutions! The risk being that McCain actually does something that works and comes out looking great (chances of that happening...about the same as hell freezing over).

Please GOD, let this be a resignation speech.

*enters into daydream*

My fellow Americans... it has come to my attention that I suck at my job. Rather then inflict myself and my dumbass and corrupt policies on the country I love any longer I resign as the President of the United States. In my last action I sent Vice President Cheney to Guantanamo Bay so there will be at least one real war criminal there, and am appointing my father as new Vice president and my successor on the grounds that he seemed to have been right about just about everything.

I'm sorry, my bad.

Well, on par with the Great Depression of the 1930's. I'd like to point out it took a World War to pull us out of that.

...however, the great fortunes (bar Microsoft's) of the last century were all made by people who kept their heads together during that crisis. Might be time to clean out the hubris again, and let others from the middle/poor classes up into the higher teirs of wealth.

I expect you're right. Maybe it's needed, but I'm for waiting another couple months and let the guy who's going to be in office the next four years at least and has to suffer the consequences of this decision do the deed. Not some imbecile who shouldn't have had the office at all, never gave a shiat, and I wouldn't put past stirring the shiat just to see what happens.

Via viable long term investing. No naked shorting, no junk bonds, no high risk hedges. It needs to be wiped clean.

As someone who recently joined the middle class, but has no savings I don't know if I am in favor of a melt-down anymore. Can we schedule it for about 5 years from now so I can use my new found lack of poverty (because calling it "wealth" just isn't accurate) to save up for a bit first?

Thanks!

katiegd: Heroes had so many plot twists in the first episode...it just might be more comlicated than the economy.

I don't really consider them "plot twists" (aside from the "I'm your mother" thing at the end) but more of a "reboot". They're saying "Look, we farked up Season 2. We know. Give us another shot."

That's my excuse for why Ali Larter's character is still alive, at least.

Yes it was. Are the writes assuming we are idiots? And I think everyone knew there would be repercussions to him injecting himself. I was thinking he'd turn into a spider.

And then HRG comes home to sift through papers instead of seeing Claire first thing! Are you kidding me, Sylar just told him where he got his ability from! And he goes home to look for some paperwork first? Durrrrr

Other than that I thought the premiere of Heroes was pretty damn good. Lots more action...but I would prefer a great story, character development and good dialogue over all the action though.

Linderman may not be alive, so maybe only 2 resurrected characters. And Nathan already had the regenerative blood in him from his burn thing in Season 2, and Ali Larter is probably farking one of the producers to stay on the show.

No, no, Mohinder is turning into Godzilla. That's what was attacking Tokyo when Hiro went to the future. It should be a huge improvement for his character.

Anywho, the belief that the meltdown of the American Financial System would be of benefit to the poor or mostly debt ridden middle class is fairly laughable. If you think of it as everyone just trying to be the last rat to go under the water on the sinking ship, they'd be the first to drown. Maybe one or two would scurry up on the bodies of his drowning peers, sure, but everyone isn't suddenly going to get a share. That's just not the way it works.

Errr? What's laughable is that anyone thinks bailing out these corrupt institutions is distasteful yet 'necessary'.

I am saying that the current methods of investing on Wall St. are completely corrupt. Seriously, you would get 1000x more value from your investments if you just purchased a tap system for your keg and drank your savings away.

A meltdown of the current corrupt banks and a clean slate for the common man *is* needed. No one is going to drown. There will be no depression. A revamp is what needs to occur immediately, not a bailout.

Lest I point the fingers only at corrupt Republicans. Warren Buffet is showing his true colors today.

Bush has 4 months left on the "job"... this is why we haven't seen him much. He's got the typical "short-timers" attitude... like we used to say in the military, "117 days and a wake-up!"

Milkbeer: ** 2001

April: The Administration's FY02 budget declares that the size of Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac is "a potential problem," because "financial trouble of a large GSE could cause strong repercussions in financial markets, affecting Federally insured entities and economic activity."

** 2002

May: The President calls for the disclosure and corporate governance principles contained in his 10-point plan for corporate responsibility to apply to Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac. (OMB Prompt Letter to OFHEO, 5/29/02)

** 2003

January: Freddie Mac announces it has to restate financial results for the previous three years.

February: The Office of Federal Housing Enterprise Oversight (OFHEO) releases a report explaining that "although investors perceive an implicit Federal guarantee of [GSE] obligations," "the government has provided no explicit legal backing for them." As a consequence, unexpected problems at a GSE could immediately spread into financial sectors beyond the housing market. ("Systemic Risk: Fannie Mae, Freddie Mac and the Role of OFHEO," OFHEO Report, 2/4/03)

September: Fannie Mae discloses SEC investigation and acknowledges OFHEO's review found earnings manipulations.

September: Treasury Secretary John Snow testifies before the House Financial Services Committee to recommend that Congress enact "legislation to create a new Federal agency to regulate and supervise the financial activities of our housing-related government sponsored enterprises" and set prudent and appropriate minimum capital adequacy requirements.

October: Fannie Mae discloses $1.2 billion accounting error.

November: Council of the Economic Advisers (CEA) Chairman Greg Mankiw explains that any "legislation to reform GSE regulation should empower the new regulator with sufficient strength and credibility to reduce systemic risk." To reduce the potential for systemic instability, the regulator would have "broad authority to set both risk-based and minimum capital standards" and "receivership powers necessary to wind down the affairs of a troubled GSE." (N. Gregory Mankiw, Remarks At The Conference Of State Bank Supervisors State Banking Summit And Leadership, 11/6/03)

** 2004

February: The President's FY05 Budget again highlights the risk posed by the explosive growth of the GSEs and their low levels of required capital, and called for creation of a new, world-class regulator: "The Administration has determined that the safety and soundness regulators of the housing GSEs lack sufficient power and stature to meet their responsibilities, and therefore...should be replaced with a new strengthened regulator." (2005 Budget Analytic Perspectives, pg. 83)

February: CEA Chairman Mankiw cautions Congress to "not take [the financial market's] strength for granted." Again, the call from the Administration was to reduce this risk by "ensuring that the housing GSEs are overseen by an effective regulator." (N. Gregory Mankiw, Op-Ed, "Keeping Fannie And Freddie's House In Order," Financial Times, 2/24/04)

June: Deputy Secretary of Treasury Samuel Bodman spotlights the risk posed by the GSEs and called for reform, saying "We do not have a world-class system of supervision of the housing government sponsored enterprises (GSEs), even though the importance of the housing financial system that the GSEs serve demands the best in supervision to ensure the long-term vitality of that system. Therefore, the Administration has called for a new, first class, regulatory supervisor for the three housing GSEs: Fannie Mae, Freddie Mac, and the Federal Home Loan Banking System." (Samuel Bodman, House Financial Services Subcommittee on Oversight and Investigations Testimony, 6/16/04)

** 2005

April: Treasury Secretary John Snow repeats his call for GSE reform, saying "Events that have transpired since I testified before this Committee in 2003 reinforce concerns over the systemic risks posed by the GSEs and further highlight the need for real GSE reform to ensure that our housing finance system remains a strong and vibrant source of funding for expanding homeownersh ...
