Hey, I'm cool with the law if it means women can't wear bikini's.

That means more topless beaches.

You know, muslims wonder why everyone else in the world hates them.

Perhaps its because they take the fun out of everything they touch?

I was expecting this to be a muslim thing too, but FTA: "Bali, which is mainly Hindu, is up in arms...". This is surprising because it seems hindus are typically pretty "live and let live" type folk.

Urrrrmmmmmm, fail?

Did you read the rest of TFA or just those words? Coz even that full sentence gives it away: "Bali, which is mainly Hindu, is up in arms, fearing for its easy-going lifestyle and sensual charms. "

It's a Muslim fundy thing, nothing else. Bali is a minority Hindu culture in Indonesia which is a Muslim majority country, and they're trying to push these standards on Bali even though the Balinese are not uptight enough to actually want these rules.

As a person who lives in Bali 6 to 7 moths out of every year, this is particularly upsetting. Up until recently, the Indonesian government has been largely secular, despite the fact that the population is 90% muslim. This change is ominous. The Golkar party doesn't care what happens to Bali, and would be happy if tourism ended there.

As an Indonesian living in the US (and going back there tomorrow), this scares the shiat outta me.

The govt is largely secular, but those fundies are goddamm persistent.

Personally I'd avoid Bali (too many whities) and go to Lombok or any of its neigbouring islands. Despite all of its chest thumping Indonesia has a very weak central gov't. Outside of Java and Sumatra, people just don't give a shiat.

I love Bali and I am in the process of building a home there. It would not bother me one bit to see less Europeans and Aussies scantily clad on the beach. I like boobies as much as the next dude but it's rude to go around like that on a predominantly Hindi island.

What's the big draw of the beach anyway? These old Euro-leatherface 50+ women seem to like to lay out there for hours. Boring!

It seems to me like some of the Eurotrash and Aussies that frequent the island tend to walk around like they own the place and are quite rude and disrespectful. Not all, but some. I suppose that could be said for people from any country visiting another country.

/you should visit Bali

jiaxiaobo: Why does the entire world have to share American values? Leave 'em alone.

Which is really funny since this whole story is predicated on the fact that the conservative Muslim government, on Java, is trying to impose its values on the people of Bali.

Why does Bali have to share the values of Java? Leave 'em alone.

It is upsetting to stroll down the beach and see a fifty year old woman with tits hitting the sand in a bikini.

Gross.

I think even in the United States it should be illegal to wear a bikini if you don't have the body for it.

It should be illegal for men or women to wear any type of revealing clothes, unless you've got the body for it.

I hope you're trolling. While I agree with you regarding the rotten attitudes of the Aussies, the obvious issue here is the imposition of reactionary morality by a supposedly secular government.

This changes the environment of Bali in a terrible way. As you should know, if you live there, Bali's economy depends on tourism. The law would "criminalize all public acts and material capable of raising sexual desires or violating "community morality", including poetry and music."

If imposed, it would destroy the economy of Bali as easily as another suicide bomb at a club. This is the last thing Bali needs, as it has only recently recovered from the last suicide bomb in 2005.

In other words, don't be naive.

The Muslims are not happy with Australian attitudes to beachware so you may not see Aussie girls in bikinis even in Aus. before too long.

Bali is truly one of the most beautiful places you can go and the natives are a friendly and enjoyable people. It is unfortunate that the muslim government is messing with the place so fully. Most of the people that I met throughout Indonesia claimed to be muslim in order to be left alone and in order to receive basic government services. The majority of them were not muslim but it was the only way for them to have any form of life.
