And that church was more than likely built over decades a couple of centuries or more ago. So the bill for that place has been paid over and over again. Meanwhile 10 miles from my house, a protestant SECT built this huge, HUGE church right along I-40. Two years later they thought, not ostentatious enough and built a BIGGER one right next to it. Now there are two.

They had a black and white electronic sign in front of the church when they opened, a year later its replaced by a FULL color one. I wrote the pastor, preacher (whothefarkever) and asked how many meals and clothes for needy people the upgrade would've bought, I have recieved no response yet.

I lol'd, because I grew up in southern baptist churches, and I -knew- as soon as I saw the picture that's exactly what it was. That's a bit of an extreme way to put it, or I just got really lucky (in one way. . .) about the family I was born into and the churches we attended, especially given my dad is a s.baptist pastor.

I once tried to explain Gnosticism to a friend of mine who happens to be a Jehovah's Witness (long story). In particular, I was focusing on the Gnostic belief that the teachings of Jesus are just one of many paths to salvation--a view that was crushed when Rome adopted Christianity basically because it wasn't authoritarian enough. It seems like the majority (or at least the most vocal) of Christians, including Jehovah's Witnesses and Southern Baptists, still hold the blatantly authoritarian view that it's basically either Jesus's way or the highway.

That conversation didn't change her beliefs, but at least she found it interesting. Hopefully it at least got her to think about her beliefs a little more critically.

I know someone who considers herself a "neo-pagan" who tried the same thing when talking to some fundie. I wasn't there, so all I know is that she couldn't get it through the other person's thick skull that Jesus was NOT a Christian.

I don't know what variety of Christian that particular fundie was (or even if it was a man or a woman), but I think that once a religious group gets to that level of fundamentalism, they all look exactly the same.

Just makes me sad
