The Iranian economy could very well be the thing that brings "regime change" there.

that's what an iranian girl i knew told me. she gets pissed when we stick our beaks over there.. according to her, most iranians hate ahmadxjhfgskd, and eventually they will throw him out on their own.

Did you explain to her that Ahmedinejad holds no power, and that the Ayatollahs actually call the shots, and that therefore her opinion is pretty goddamn worthless because she doesn't know that?

The thing about Iran having a lot of oil is that it doesn't have a lot of refining capacity, so they can't really get much use from their own oil. That was one of the reasons that they were pushing for nuclear power, originally pebble-bed reactors which can't make weapons-grade material, until we started banging our shields about it.

Iran has no refineries, right? All gasoline has to be imported.
They are sitting on a sea of unusable oil until somebody else refines it.

Then why not just build a refinery? it's cheaper than a nuclear plant, and fractional distillation aint' exactly rocket science--it's century-old technology.

Why can't Iran build a refinery or two? They can build a nuclear reactor and long range missiles but not an oil refinery?

We could help bring regime change by kicking oil addiction. Then those scary Iranians will be on the UN floor threatening pistachio embargoes while the Arabs try to fund their gold toilets for every sheik 5 year plans with frankincense and myrrh or whatever the hell the Arabs produced before oil.

So it makes sense for the US to provide an external threat to help Iran's leaders stay in control, so they can provide an external threat to prop up US leaders. Everyone is happy!

Isn't it typical of the countries in the Middle East to not refine their own oil?

By that, I mean rely on outside resources to understand the process, design the refineries and run them.

That's my understanding, anyway.

/anyone?

bales: that's what an iranian girl i knew told me. she gets pissed when we stick our beaks over there.. according to her, most iranians hate ahmadxjhfgskd, and eventually they will throw him out on their own.

This.

The US (and England) sticking their noses (and armies) in the middle east and thinking they know best since nonstop world war one continues the fark over everyone all over the world. Iran sitting on a bed of oil doesn't really do a lot for a country that has had minimal investment and huge domestic problems (including heroin - which has flooded the country even more so since the US kicked out the Taliban. Huge amounts of unemployemnt (heroin is good for that since its dirt cheap, and alcohol and pot is illegal there, so you might as well go with the most bang for your buck since its all illegal), huge gap income gap, huge amounts of governmental bullshiat, etc etc)

sorry I digressed then I noticed:

This. again. sitting on a ton of fuel (no matter what source) doesn't really do anything unless you make use of it.
i.e. 1 ton of nuclear grade plutonium...and no powerplant...equal no power.

/would equal wicked burn though

2008-09-18 12:04:22 PM
Oh great....maybe we should invade/occupy their country to help them out while we go broke in the process. Pretty soon we can be like a poorly ran franchise occupying countries all over the world while not turning a profit reducing the overall quality of the US economy. Then we can subsidize our own failing franchise with a government bailout from tax payers. Oh no I just got lost in my own thought. Phew need to get some coffee.

AlinaJoan: However, if they take down the current government they would have to take down the clerics as well. So, it's win win.

It depends on what you mean by "take down" - presumably they'd have to vote him out of office. This regime has been stable for thirty years now and there damn sure doesn't look to be anything close to an insurrection coming along. More likely this is just an Iranian expat's wet dream we're talking about.

Heroic Poser: Ya, you idiot! Only the people that live in America know what's going on!!

Right. Like the "iranian girl" he's talking about, who lives in America.

To say that Ahmedinejad holds no power is about as stupid as to say that he holds all the power.

If they put someone like Khatami back in (as they did pre-axis of evil), it would go a long way towards increasing personal freedom for people in the country.

It may be about the only thing left that will keep the current Iranian government in place is another war.

one-state.net

I don't think it's likely, but I think it is still possible Iran's nuke sites will get bombed by Israeli and/or U.S. aircraft before Bush leaves office.

Israel sure seems to be getting prepared for a bombing run.

If THAT happens, you can forget about any government reforms in Iran for another generation or two.
