Duh Duh DUNNNNNN!

I got a dollar that says it wasn't a "hacker", just someone who is pretty savvy at guessing the personal questions needed to reset a password.

After my dad died, I did the same thing to get his AOL password. All I needed was his birth date, pet's name, & high school.

Hacking a VP nominee's email has already established that fact.

It may have been, Yahoo is big enough that hacking a single account is a level of obfuscation by itself. But the authorities have seven days to get access to the logs... and there is no telling when the actual hack occurred... their window of opportunity may have already come and gone.

2008-09-18 09:59:50 AM
This wasn't a hack. A hack would be if he bypassed the login all together. This guy just figured out what Palin's dog's name was, or something.

They posted a screenshot without obscuring the URL - these guys aren't that smart.

All they had to do was use any number of free wireless hotspots and they are pretty much home free. Especially if it was one in a big city.

maybe the feds should bring in Trap-Door Spider to find the guy's IP address.

Considering that they blabbed about what they were doing before they saved a copy of the emails, that's a distinct possibility.

Unless the hot spot they used records MAC addresses, which most do, and they didn't spoof theirs. It is a bit more complex to track a MAC address across the internet than tracing back an IP, but it can be done.

They LOST info?
I fear you may be right.

Even if they get the person(s) who did this. You all do realize how Anonymous works right?

You might cut the head off one, but 7 more grow in its place.

I was thinking about this yesterday looking at the screenshots. I saw they were using ctunnel and then I saw the session there in the URL bar. Smooth move.

Uh, yeah, right. The difficulty there is proving that the address wasn't spoofed. Not to mention they're completely changeable on most laptop wireless cards, so it's not exactly a complex thing to do.

This showed up first on the /b/ forum of 4Chan, the person was not looking for damning evidence to make Sarah Palin unelectable... they were looking for the LOLZ. Hence the reason why there was no real effort or preparation put into this.

That is what I was trying to say... if the hacker was a dumb ass and didn't spoof is MAC address and didn't change the wireless card then he can be tracked. If he has done any of these things... then yeah, he's a ghost.

Talon: Library computer. Problem solved.

I'll bet someone a month of TF that they have this person's name within 7 days.

If they were in the US, and this happened in the middle of the night, the odds of them being in a library or using a free hotspot decrease by about 50%.

We have a public community center with internet that purposely doesn't save logs beyond a day, open late. Granted, that's probably not the case most places, but... yeah. Of course the other option is just drive down the STREET, half the houses and apartments have people subscribing to cable internet with wide open wireless running, so it's an open hotspot.

It's an interesting question, though, sure the guy only guessed her password (or the questions to reset it) so it seems like "not really hacking" but on the other hand it's trivial to steal mail out of paper mailboxes and read it, but that's not legal.

2008-09-18 11:08:23 AM
...or is it NOT actually illegal to steal mail/read mail and put it back in the box in the US? (sees other thread)

Exactly, they could have even bought a cheapo card just for this purpose, then thrown it away. But, it would be easier just to spoof it.

Stoj: If they were in the US, and this happened in the middle of the night, the odds of them being in a library or using a free hotspot decrease by about 50%.

When I was looking for apartments and didn't have anywhere stable to stay, I'd drive around with my laptop, until it picked up a signal. I'd park, do what I needed, move along. Middle of the night or not, there are tons of unsecured networks all over the place. Just go by a cluster of apartment buildings or office buildings that don't encrypt their routers/turn them off.

I know of at least 4 places within 15 mins. of where I now live that I could grab some Internet if I really needed it -- and even outside, get at least a "very good" if not "excellent" connection.

No FARK archive links to ye olde "ZOMG our phones are wiretapped!" threads, or the now classic "Your ISP giving logs to FBI" threads?

And everyone's getting in a huff because... a PROMINANT REPUBLICAN POLITICIAN HAD HER PRIVACY VIOLATED?

Not all Americans are created equal, huh?

Like I said - it doesn't make it impossible, just less likely. I don't think this person thought their cunning plan all the way through.

I bet I could have done it if I were so inclined, and I know next to nothing about proxies, hacking, spoofing or whatever other fan-dangled words the kids are using these days.

Please please please let the hacker be a bright, un-indictable 12 year-old. That would be a win on so many levels.

Let's go over some basic IP information here when it come's to IP and MAC addy spoofing.

You CAN spoof an IP and a MAC address, however this is only useful if you only need the information to go one direction, as in a Denial of Service attack. If you are attempting to access a website, however, a spoofed IP and MAC will do you no good because when the server attempts to send repy packets back to the requesting machine, the information will be lost. This makes it impossible for someone to spoof an IP and/or MAC and be able to access IP based information.

The only way the /b/tards won't be caught is if they were on a wireless hotspot that does not take information from the host machine, though most of them do just incase people attempt illegal activities from their connection.

/b/ is dumb, they couldnt hack a typewriter without getting caught.
