Do you, Sen. Reid, agree with the Bush Doctrine?

In what respect Charlie?

He and Pelosi are truly great leaders.

Unless we get a time machine to undo Gramm-Leach-Bliley, there's not much we CAN do besides restore Glass-Steagall and then ride it out.

...and give the Republicans a crap-load of welfare for their failing banking companies that exploited their Republican bill's deregulation.

I'd probably answer with a blank look if I were asked how many Band-Aids I'd use to treat a sucking chest wound.

Holy crap this and a bag of chips

Yeah, and if he had said, "Let's do something," all of the internet conservatives (I am one of those) would say, "Slow down there, FDR."

Damned if you do, damned if you don't, Harry. I say this was an honest and intelligent response. Better to admit that no politician alive has had to deal with this in American government, and that everyone needs more information and some healthy debate.

Seriously. I am a conservative, and I will gladly dump on Harry Reid for every other stupid thing he says, but this is not one of those things.

How about we just let bad businesses fail, like a free market is supposed to?

You think the GLB Act made this happen? Funny.

I'm sure that's going to be high on the Democratic talking points when people start asking them about how their huge push to get poor people into home ownership back in the 1990s - starting with muscling the big banks to accept low-quality loans - made most of this come about.

2008-09-17 08:10:52 PM
He should have said "we need to form a commission to examine the problem, just like 9/11."

That's what a real take-charge leader would say.

get em out.

Churchill2004: Forget passing legislation. They need to start repealing legislation.

You'll always get someone to agree with that statement.

/Had a discussion with my brother's gf yesterday about the 'economy is strong' nonsense McCain said the other day. Decided that McCain campaign sound bites usually had three things in common. They are vague, repeatable, and incorrect.
//not saying you were incorrect C2004, just going on a tangent.

This was an honest, intelligent response. He's in favor of waiting and getting more information. That's reasonable at this stage.

Hmm, I remeber a certain president in the last 8 years taking credit for the record home ownership levels in the SotU.

rodeofrog: Stupid mormon.

Hehe.

This isn't new territory. I do believe our banking industry has crashed in the past. We'll go ahead and pass some sort of legislation to provide federal government guarantee of deposits and maintain stability and public confidence in the nation's banking systems. Then we'll go ahead and live in a very depressing time for most of a decade before we decide to conquer half the world to revitalize our economy.

You're right, and the Dem side of the aisle has to take their share of the blame for this clusterfark. But don't forget what the GLB act DID do - it vastly facilitated the packaging of all those shiat loans into financial vaporware that was then disseminated like a toxin into our entire financial system. And they can't fix it. At this point, about all they can do is act to prevent it from happening again in the future.

Harry Reid, is by far, the greatest asshahat has ever been 'graced' the floor of the Senate. Suck me libs. Between him and Nancy Pelosi - you lose ANY argument about Bush or any elected republican since Lincoln. It is absolutely embarrassing.

2008-09-17 08:21:11 PM
Did Reid's blank look take on a "My Pet Goat" appearance or was it more of a "In what regard, Charlie?" type of thing?

2008-09-17 08:21:25 PM
It won't matter if they attempted to pass anything. Bush would either veto it or add a signing statement to make it useless.

Why should Congress do a damn thing? Businesses are failing, they should fail because they were poorly run (by Republicans, generally).

We could do what Gov Palin suggested. We should hold the financial sector accountable and regulate them and then we should make the government hands off and not interfere anymore. Or something. Or .. huh?

Just think, if you vote for Sen. Obama this Nov, you will just make this asswipe (Reid) more powerful.

Don't do it!

After an awkward pause, Senator Reid responded, "That's not something we do here in the Senate."

My favorite part of the article is how the Republicans attack the Dems, but when it's pointed out how the current disaster is due to the Republican administration not enforcing existing rules, then it all becomes about "rising above politics" and "avoiding partisan bickering".

During the 1930's the US still had a pretty strong manufacturing industry thank you Ford, et all. WWII energized this base to drag our shell shocked country into the prosperious 50's and 60's Today, ummm not so much.

This is pretty much true.

An Obama Presidency with this congress could be horrific.

With the party's reputation on the line, they just did nothing. Politics as usual.

I have an idea....more stimulus checks but this time make them big like the ones you get if you win a golf tournament.

You're right! We should vote in McCain who will send in Phil Gram to save us all with unregulated/trickle down/supply side economics! 4 more years! It's Super Gram to the rescue! Wooosh!

Do you need a bucket to carry all that stupid around, son?

I have to weigh in with those who say that his response was honest and accurate. Before a hurricane is a good time to argue building codes and evacuation plans. Also after a hurricane. During a hurricane is a terrible time to argue building codes and evacuation plans.

You are out of your mind. Reid and Pelosi suck, but NOBODY has done near the damage to this country as Bush and the Republicans recently.

You did have complete controll of the government in every aspect for 6 of the last 8, and still control the executive and can crash any bill in congress. I mean, the fact you STILL try to point at dem leaders for this is amazing. not really, but surprising.

Eh, not really. You have a mental illness when it comes to your "team".
