I'm guessing it's more to do with a bush ravaged economy.

During a cruise in '06 I stopped in on Grand Caymen after a hurricane (can't remember which one...) The place was indeed trashed. My first thought was 'Hey, great! Cheap stuff, no crowds!' What I quickly realized was that with all the trees down the place looked very non-paradise like and the locals gouged even more for things like beach chairs and towels. It ended up being super depressing.

The trade group is urging local tourism officials to use webcams and broadcast live video of idyllic beach settings porn to counter concerns.

You're guessing wrong, jackass. The islands have gone through the same thing every time hurricanes pass through for many, many years. Bush may be an idiot, but I don't blame him for your idiocy.

I'd advertise the post-disaster looting opportunities. That'll bring some bargain shoppers down.

Leaving Sunday for a week in St. John - the US Virgin Islands. Four big hurricanes have whipped across the Carib and left the USVI and British VI alone.

It will be a nice week away from Fark!

My wife and I went on a cruise in the spring and the islands really looked like crap from all of the storms last year. I wasn't impressed at all.

2008-09-17 10:48:38 AM
Do you need a passport to go to the USVI or Puerto Rico?

I didn't need one for Aruba or Cancun but that will probably change soon.

Its true. I was there 3 years ago. Gotta get back. The best part is that there were no pushy obnoxious Americans around. The worst part is that there were pushy obnoxious Europeans around.

The next time you hear someone complain about rude Americans, point them to the Tripadvisor.com message boards Cuba section; where if you're lucky, you'll see Comedy Gold Flame Wars between Britons complaining about rude Canadians and Canadians complaining about rude Britons.

Fark.com evolution, politics and college football flame wars are pretty weak in comparison.

Ya, but the rude Canadians are all from Ontario. :D

I was on a booze cruise, and this one guy would not shut up talking to this dutch couple about how great he was and how awesome Ontario was and how much money he makes and the boat he owns and bla bla bla. I said to my wife "bet he is from Ontario" sure enough . . . I finally couldn't take it anymore and went over and saved the Dutch couple. They were VERY grateful. The 4 of us ended up having a really good day and the Ontario guy went back to tormenting his family.

have to agree with varadero, it's a special place. Unfortunatly, "pushy obnoxious Americans" are on the way once Castro Lite takes the money and runs.

/I'll see a S'bucks @ the RIU in V-dero there in less than 2 years
