I am sorry but of all the things that we can poke fun at, this tragic event is not funny nor should we use anythng or anyone's sincere attempt to pay respect as a joke. Any one of us could of lost a loved one or realitve in that event. I like a good laugh once in a while as anyone else but Drew, shame on you for this one. A time and place for everything, this day, this was not the time.

Psycho Zombie Monkey: (other than Gwendolyn's office mate's girlfriend - who did know guy who saw Ferris faint at 31 Flavors)who actually saw the shoot down (mid air explosions tend to be visible for miles) or jets streaking away.

Well, number one, I was sitting next to him when she called so it's like second hand. Number two as I said I assumed she saw jets in the sky after and was confused.

that's the last i heard of a shoot-down... after that it was all "Let's roll!"

OK.. but what is the effing point of covering it up?

Hey.. we might have shot a plane down to prevent it from hitting another target. So? why hide that?

i dunno... it seems like the people i talked to that morning all took it as a given that it was shot down and that it was necessary until the official story was put out there.

Can you imagine the lawsuits of shooting down a plane full of people? Let alone ones who were on the phone will family claiming to be fighting back. They would have gotten the plane back and you MURDERED THEM!

NotWithoutAsswelts: Hey, McCain only crashed, like, 5 planes.

For all the dumbasses in here saying he crashed five planes, let's examine at least two of the instances:

One "crash" was when he was shot down.

The other "crash" involved him sitting in the cockpit of his jet on the flight deck of the USS Forrestal. A missile on another jet malfunctioned and was fired across the deck, hitting the jet next to McCain's. The Forrestal was nearly lost in the ensuing fire and horrible explosions.

And a burnout of a jet in another crash, I would say, was not all that uncommon.

I'm not saying the guy was a great pilot or anything, but to say "BUT, BUT HE CRASHED FIVE TIMES!!!! OMG!!!!" is completely false. I wouldn't count two of those.

Ya morons.

THIS. Even if the government shot the plane down, what do they have to gain by lying about it? And the 9/11 Commission report clearly states that the President did give the order to shoot down any remaining hijacked plane on 9/11, but that the order came after 93 had already crashed.

What's the motive? Why would they admit that they would have shot the plane down, but cover up the fact that they actaully did. Take off the tinfoil hats people.

OK, fair enough. How about instead we count the number of times he surrendered to the North Vietnamese? The freepers here can then tell us the acceptable number of times for a wannabe president to surrender to the enemy. And then we're all happy.

As much as you might like to believe that, it's simply not true.

And here I'd heard that repeated enough that I figured it was true. This is one liberal that won't be repeating that story anymore.

McCain still pretty clearly got where he did in the Navy by being an admiral's son (not to mention Slew McCain's grandson), but at least he was a competent pilot.

How many of you think United 93 was actually shot down?

My in-laws are all from PA, and every single one of them states this as a fact. Some are Republican, most are Democrats, but they don't disagree on this.

Personally, I'm not sure if it matters...if they had to shoot it down, they had to. And it doesn't take anything away from the passengers that fought back in-flight.

Just wondering.

I live about 15 minutes away. Many friends, coworkers, etc that live near the crash site swear it was shot down. No dramatic conspiracy theories or anything, they just state it as fact and have ever since the day it happened.

Seems to make sense to me, ever wonder why they won't let us listen to the last few seconds of the recording?

All naval pilots are competent pilots. You do not fly off of or land on aircraft carriers unless you have the skills to do it. There is way too much risk involved to just hand that job to someone based on who their family is.

This.

McCain had mechanical problems twice, was shot down once and had a fourth plane destroyed on the deck of the Forrestal. By the way, he was apparently trying to help rescue another pilot when one of the bombs went off on the Forrestal.

The fifth incident which is usually cited involves power lines near the Mediterranean in which his plane never crashed.

Instead of being a lousy pilot as the left attempts to claim, he appears to have been quite heroic.

None of these incidents prevented McCain from winning regular promotions and being assigned additional flight duty. The Navy praised his "aggressiveness and skillful airmanship" when awarding him the Navy Commendation Medal for an attack Oct. 18, 1967, on a shipyard in Haiphong, North Vietnam, prior to his capture. The Navy also commended his "superb airmanship" in awarding him the Distinguished Flying Cross for a bombing attack on a Hanoi power plant Oct. 26, 1967. His plane was hit by a surface-to-air missile on that mission, but he "continued his bomb delivery pass and released his bombs over the target" before being forced to eject, according to the official citation.

What are you talking about? He surrendered to the North Vietnamese? Are you referring to when he was captured, half conscious with broken arms and broken knee, pulled from the lake he landed in? Or are you talking about statements made when he was a POW?

Either way, i think you are egregiously out of line and ignorant.

If you are trolling, you suck. Subtlety is needed to bait people before you build up to outlandishly stupid statements...

Just wondering.

I'm south of Pittsburgh, 93 flew damned near over my house on its wacky path before crashing up in the mountains. I've seen the flight path, listened to ATC tapes, looked at every piece of evidence I could find, and I see no reason to believe that it was shot down. But I also can't conclusively say that it wasn't, and under the circumstances I could see the government possibly making the call to do so. My guess is the assholes just ran it into the ground when the passengers were closing in on them.

I shared an office with a guy who's girlfriend went to Saint Francis. She was driving back after seeing him and she was driving on 219 at the time it happened. She called right after saying she saw a plane get shot down.

I dunno if I would take her word as gospel. I could see why the plane was shot down if it was and there could have been jets following it anyway.

That was a very shiatty day at work. My coont of a boss actually expected us to get work done AND have the board of directors meeting that evening. "there's nothing you can do about it. Turn off the TV"

I have an uncle whose best friends sisters nephew heard from his neighbors mothers hairdresser, that she over heard some guy at a gas station telling the attendant that her fathers brother heard from someone that knows someone that is positive he heard someone say that that his best friends girlfriends brother "knows" for a fact that the plane might have been shot down because he thinks he heard them say that on TV.

But don't take his word for it.

John McCain would rather stay in Iraq for another 100 years than acknowledge the kind of change we need to honor the victims of 9/11 and their families by taking a realistic approach to stopping bin Laden and his followers.
