I'll at least give the admins this much: the political opinion articles that are green-lighted do seem to stay even, ie equal number of pro lefts and rights.

Yes, he won the popular vote - teaching a new generation of Americans that being elected is no guarantee of winning under the arcane and anti-democratic provisions of America's 18th century Constitution. But with an opponent like George Bush, Mr. Gore should have won that vote by a large enough margin to make the entire business of Florida and the Supreme Court irrelevant. He should have, as they used to say, "mopped the floor with" an opponent as inarticulate, unimaginative, and with such a questionable background as Mr. Bush. But he didn't.
To paraphrase, "The Constitution of the United States is broken. I don't like the way that the Electoral College works. Even so, Gore sucked rocks; any other candidate would have won."

I think that [image from too old to be available] do its detractors' dirty work, MrBeefy. This isn't insulting liberals in general, it's insulting Gore because he tried to use non-liberal methodology, "family values", in his campaign. Thus, he's saying that the Democratic Party is not liberal any more.

I'm a Dem, but I have never ever found Al Gore a compelling candidate from the get-go. Thank GOD he is not running.

I do thank him for inventing the Internet, though. And for making some hot girls.

2002-12-20 03:42:18 PM
christ this is long-winded.

i'm a really liberal person, but i HATE it when people attack the constitution in the first paragraph. the constitution is pretty damned good. and the electoral college is there to keep people from voting in Mickey Mouse or Carson Daily.

The Net is great. You used to have to read Communist screed on papers passed out on street corners in college towns. Now all you have to do is click.

2002-12-20 03:45:16 PM
I see the liberals are comming out in response to this headline. Must not be a lot of people using the computers down at the food bank today.
2002-12-20 03:45:41 PM
Depending on whether you plan on rapping or just rhyming, there's a couple things that rhyme loosely with "Liberal".

Hit a bowl(or bull, if you're not a pothead)
Induril, if you played Morrowind at all.
From there on out it starts to push it pretty good, and I'm tired and feverish, so that's all i got.

Please note the author's bio:

[John Chuckman is former chief economist for a large Canadian oil company. He has many interests and is a lifelong student of history. He writes with a passionate desire for honesty, the rule of reason, and concern for human decency. He is a member of no political party and takes exception to what has been called America's "culture of complaint" with its habit of reducing every important issue to an unproductive argument between two simplistically defined groups. John regards it as a badge of honor to have left the United States as a poor young man from the South Side of Chicago when the country embarked on the pointless murder of something like three million Vietnamese in their own land because they happened to embrace the wrong economic loyalties. He lives in Canada, which he is fond of calling "the peaceable kingdom."]

And Canadians wonder why we don't like them. Canada is only peacable because they have the US to protect them. Nobody wants to beat up on our little brother.

Furthermore, this author is an cheesedick.

Bush's Texas-barbecue-and-lethal-injection crowd is driving all civilized nations on the planet to reconsider aspects of their relationship with the United States, something that likely will have profound consequences over the next few decades.

What a great line!
2002-12-20 03:49:43 PM
yes north korea did, invade south korea. Truman's "fiasco is that the communists didn't win.

remember these people's problem isn't who being oppressed it's who's doing the oppressing. The united states using force to make saddam follow the agreements that iraq 10 years ago is unforgivable. also note that EVERY SINGLE step made by the government to protect american citizens is a hate crime in their eyes. but if china wants to round up a bunch of it's citizens and sumarily execute them no one at the yellow times would see anyting wrong with that. china would simply be guarenteeing their own security. because america isn't a communist nation we have no such rights.
2002-12-20 03:49:55 PM
Whoa, I closed *BOTH* tags correctly...amazing!

Oh, and liberals suck.

The only presidential candidate in recent memory who was more of a retard than W Bush was Al Gore. Pretty sure Al could read at better than a fifth grade level so he had a bit of an edge.

Bass555: "Mr. Johnson's fiasco in Korea"

This guy is a misinformed idiot.

Look who's talking. It was "Truman's fiasco in Korea". Johnson caused the "Holocaust of Vietnam".
2002-12-20 03:56:44 PM
Who gives a fark what this guy thinks. He is a draft dodging ex-American who now lives in Canada. The only thing that is right is the color---YELLOW----
2002-12-20 03:57:45 PM
Rhymes with liberal: Farcical? Comical?

I think that this article is leading to exactly the same problem as the Democrats themselves: correctly identifying the issue (lack of enthusiasm-generating candidates) but totally misinterpreting the solution (turning harder to the left).

Gore was a complete disaster from the get-go. He had no idea how to get people excited about him, and all he could do was go around looking for some arse to kiss and trying to figure out whether he was liberal or conservative, so nobody really knew what he stood for. Likewise in the midterm elections, nobody could figure out what the Democrats really stood for because they couldn't disagree too strongly with a popular president, and so they didn't have a concise platform to run on. So, the Democrats picked a very liberal Nancy Pelosi to lead them in the House, signalling an overall shift to the left.

This won't work. After he lost the election, and Bush gained popularity, Gore tried to do this, differentiating himself by turning hard to the left, endorsing single-payer health care and coming out questioning war in the middle east. Needless to say, that was a total flop, he was ridiculed, and his support totally went away, forcing him to give up his presidential aspirations. What makes the Democrats think this will work on a party-wide scale?
