"All copies destroyed" my ass. Nice publicity stunt though...

Someone explained the All Star Batman & Robin as giving the fans exactly what they wanted.

Gritty, foul mouthed Batman written by Frank Miller and drawn by Jim Lee.

I totally think Miller is phoning this in and not even trying because what the fans want is just cliche material over and over again. I really think to him it's all one big joke and that's why the line "God damn Batman" seems to work it's way into almost every issue.

But that was just one person's theory, not mine.

I think he's too busy producing movies now, he's moved onto a new medium.

/Spirit FTW.

The price is only going to drop as the "scandal" goes away.

I would be selling them for $25 each.

So teenaged Batgirl rides a skateboard and makes the arcade safe from drug dealers?

If not for the swearing, I would think this was produced in the '80s by the Just Say No folks.

Having read the first couple issues of the comic, mere destruction is too good for it. It's unbelievably awful.

I'm convinced Miller is farking sick of Batman and just wants to get fired.

Bondidude: I really think to him it's all one big joke and that's why the line "God damn Batman" seems to work it's way into almost every issue.

It definitely is all a joke now, but I'm of the opinion that it didn't begin as a joke. The early couple of issues (before the giant hiatus that was the delays surrounding I believe issue 4) take themselves far more seriously than the later ones.

/Spirit FTW.

I think you're the first person I've seen who's said that.

That said: you're wrong on the headline, submitter. It may be the "Goddamned Batman", but it's the "farking Batgirl".

Really?

I've not read much Eisner, but I did enjoy what I've read. And with Miller behind the wheel producing, it's going to be a very interesting movie, if nothing else, visually.

I think you may have confused "greatest" with "dumbest". It's a common mistake, don't worry about it.

DjangoStonereaver: You used to be so brilliant.......

When was that? Oh, he had a few hits. He single handedly reinvented Batman when it was desperately needed. A few of the stories in Sin City were pretty good. And then we get shiat like Ronin, 300. When he gets license to do what he wants, we get garbage.

"300", the comic sucked. I didn't bother with the movie.

2008-09-10 01:33:27 PM
Yeah, a superhero using profanity would be pretty shocking...if we were still in 1955. Somebody should send DC editors a copy of:

forbiddenplanet.co.uk

Now that's not safe for kids. I think we can live with Batgirl dropping the F-bomb.

Does anybody know if this book is actually any good? I'm a big Moore fan, so I'm curious if it would be worth the shiatstorm I would get into with the wife for owning such a thing.

gO26r:

I was lucky enough to meet Eisner about a year and a half before he died. In general, I'd be interested in "The Spirit," but Frank Miller's gone off the deep end.

During the trailer (with music that sounds like it was stolen from "The Untouchables"), when the narrator says something like, "The City is my mother, it's my lover..." there were a lot of laughs. Maybe the City is in West Virginia.

I'm afraid we might end up with "I'm the goddamn Spirit, that's why" and little else.

t3knomanser: I didn't bother with the movie.

It had a lot of slow motion and CGI blood splatter.

And slow motion CGI blood splatter.

Anyone recall that story from eariler this year where Catwoman and Batgirl are fighting naked?
I didn't hear anyone complaining about that.

For those that were reading this comic run (I haven't), there's a particular article regarding it that I happen to find hilarious every time I read it. Thought I'd share it with you.

Straelbora: During the trailer (with music that sounds like it was stolen from "The Untouchables"), when the narrator says something like, "The City is my mother, it's my lover..." there were a lot of laughs. Maybe the City is in West Virginia.

I almost laughed at the line about leaving the mask on, though that may be because it reminded me of that really bad Batman/Black Canary scene from one of the previous issues of All-Star Batman & Robin.

The moment I saw it was being done in that high-contrast with touches of colour B&W that Sin City was done in (not appropriate for The Spirit!), my hopes sank. Then I saw Miller's name, and I realised it's another project that's fallen victim to the blame eater.

/The backlash against comic-based movies is coming.

2008-09-10 03:07:36 PM
any comic store owner would be farkin retarded to destroy any copies. RETARDED. however they shouldn't sell them immediately. Keep them on wraps for a week or two. have a "anonymous seller" sell them one.

Dark Knight, Electra, Sin City, Daredevil, HardBoiled? He's had more than a few good turns, an amazing early career. So, he's become a right-winger nutcase in his dotage, he's hardly the first artist to lose his critical and creative faculties.

Slam his stuff all you want now, and there isn't a woodshed big enough to take him behind imo, but he deserved those kudos back then.

2008-09-10 03:25:58 PM
deadsanta: but he deserved those kudos back then.

I'll give you The Dark Knight stuff. Sin City was okay. It was more groundbreaking in its time, but it hasn't aged as well as it could have. I never liked his stuff on Electra or Daredevil.

I thought Hardboiled was a Hong Kong action movie. What does he have to do with it?

deadsanta: So, he's become a right-winger nutcase in his dotage

Read DKR again and you'll realize that he was always a right-wing-nutter. He just used to be a talented one. DKR's characters feel like they're lifted directly from a Jerry Pournelle book, only without the suck.

2008-09-10 03:45:10 PM
Miller's work is pretty much all noir/pulp crammed together with 1980's hyper-masculine movies.

While his stuff worked for the time of the early 90s and 80s now it just feels dated and weak. Like most of the industry has moved on but he's stuck in the same time period and unable to go any deeper.

Most of Miller's "edge" was swiped from Denny O'Neil and 70s Detective Stories.

/300 was borderline gay porn.

I bought it right after reading Watchmen. The art is very cartoony/waterbrush, and there isn't much of a story. I tried reading it, and just stopped.

Imagine that, putting a premium price on "swear words".
Someone call Andrew Dice Clay and tell him that his career just got yanked out of the "Stale Produce" bins of history!

Ah, the Internet, where pussy-wimp censors are not celebrated and the total content of the viewed writing is considered as a whole and not as a hole.

For those not willing to squint (and look away now for bad language) the offending balloons read:

Hey-- you little coont--

fark me that little coont stole my board!

fark you twice, DICKWAD, you let a farking little piece of jailbait

ASS steal your wheels...

...little jailbait coont's making us look bad... we cut her come on...

Text every friend you've got, shiatheads--

Sell your poison somewhere else. This arcade belongs to the

I enjoyed it. I think whether you like it or not may depend on how you feel about breaking sexual taboos (because just about every one is broken), and if you can look past the titillation of the sex and see why the characters are having sex.

Do I care why the characters are having sex? Sex is generally only interesting if you're one of the characters having it.
