They have demands! Listen to them- we have trees that we don't own. You own them. We will allow you to do what you want to do with property that is not ours, provided concessions are made to organizations beneficial to us.

I live right by this hoorah and it's been nothing but helicopters flying overhead. Farking annoying.

I don't find that my political views contrast too greatly with the other students here unless we're talking about fiscal policy. I'm part of the secular "individual rights and limited government" branch of the right-wing, not the "hate gays and love Jesus" crowd.

Because UC Berkeley is the best public state university in California, and one of the top schools in the nation. I'm not condoning the ultra-right wingedness of Single White Male, but all Californians have a right to an excellent education, smelly hippies and all.

I don't know if it was old-growth or not but they're currently felling 500 year-old trees near me so that the zoo can be remodeled. Build up, go underground, try anything not to destroy a medieval forest for a goddamn stadium.

The farking trees outside the Cal stadium were planted after WW1.

Yeah I addressed that, didn't mean to say that.

Yeah if you could manage to get a table there it's best to go on Thursdays when they're serving monkey head arboreal ale in those liter bottles, it's good stuff. As for Raleigh's, the food is pretty decent but we mainly went there because it had a nicer atmosphere than all the other places on Telegraph; the patio out back is a great place to have a few drinks with people after class.

Props to these students for putting up a good fight. It's a shame that these universities are so myopic when it comes to the environment and campus planning.

I'm one of those liberal Bay Area folks, and my parents were Berkeley hippies in the '60s, but we all think they were up there 2 years too long.

The most beautiful thing about trees is what you can do with them after you cut them down.

2008-09-09 09:05:54 PM
What's the holdup? Get an axe or chainsaw. Make sure they are well aware that the tree is coming down regardless. 4 less hippies sounds like a good start.

makhno: actually got my alma mater to save a tree and change the plans of a building that's now been there for 20 years (the tree finally died)

So let's see...they had to spend extra money to change the plans and 20 years later the tree was dead and gone.

Maybe had you lobbied them to spend more money on planting new trees there would still be a legacy of your efforts (you know they are a renewable resource and you can always plant more). Now all you're left with are an aging hippie's foggy memories and less trees than when you started.

You fail.

Screw these jackasses. It's not myopic by any means. There will be THREE trees planted for every tree cut down for the stadium.

//actually got my alma mater to save a tree and change the plans of a building that's now been there for 20 years (the tree finally died)

So you have a net of doing NOTHING.

They are not students. They are a bunch of shiat-stirring gutter punks who otherwise sit on Telegraph all day, trying to bum money they didn't earn.

I'm so sick and tired of this bullshiat, and let's just say I'm very happy they finally kicked them out. It's one thing if the trees are a native species to the area, but it was a dumb landscaping project of the university. All I've been hearing all f*cking day are helicopters buzzing around campus. It woke me up at 6:30 this morning, in fact.

2008-09-09 09:32:17 PM
the best part of the story is that the tops of the trees are just about level with the weight rooms in the stadium, so the football players got to heckle hippies during their daily workouts. The worst party of the story is that, after building a fence to protect the tree-people, the university starting providing daily food and water to them. They should have just built a fence and then waited.

Oh wait, we live in the country where a burglar can successfully sue for tripping on something in my house while he's breaking in, of course they had to provide food and water.

I had a weird theory as to why people do these sorts of things. I think these people want to make a positive difference in the world, but they can't see a way to do through the normal channels because making change happen through normal channels is very slow and unsure. So they instead go for the crazy gesture to try to make a positive difference, even if the ultimate end of that crazy gesture is basically meaningless. It's so they can feel inside that they've made a difference regardless of the chance of a positive outcome.

They've made really stupid and debunked claims about it being an "indian burial ground" and then a "WWI memorial grove". It's basically a bunch of dumbass hippies looking for a cause and making Berkeley look ridiculous.

This is why I left Santa Cruz. With people starving in the streets, violence rising and children being beaten to death by their own parents this is the best thing these assholes can find to protest about? If they're so concerned about the trees, they should go out to a grove and kill themselves. A decomposing body makes good fertilizer, right?
