not funny subby. More than a million people are facing the loss of their homes and all their possessions today in Cuba. The storm already killed 61 people in Haiti.

Its like two old men who live next door to each other. Forty years ago we cut down a sycamore that had a substantial portion of the root structure on our property. We have vowed never to speak again.

Fidel is on the way out, if we could open diplomatic channels with his successor and attempt to make nice with aid packages they might go the way of other commie nations and become our ally which would be a huge strategic victory especially now with Russia acting all uppity.

Well if their governments' actions aren't enough to stir another revolution, then some prodding from external sources (international politics, hurricanes, etc...) might just be the trick.

That being said, I don't see how we can justify our Cuba embargo when we don't have one set up for considerably worse states.

Sadly that won't happen. The successor has been groomed by Fidel and apparently there are a few people left in this country that actually are die hard anticommunists that want the embargo and actively fight any attempt to end it.

Basically no one has the motivation to make a serious attempt at ending the embargo

Once we beat the soviets and get rid of the embargo I wonder how much it will cost to buy one of those old cars with 1,000,000+ miles on it? and will it cost more to buy the car or to ship it to Miami?

The thing is, the US is -- I think-- the ONLY nation that embargoes Cuba. The poor economy is a farce, blaming "evil America" for their woes instead of inept management. Cuba can get stuff from any other G8 nation (like, say, Canada) so claiming that a lift of the US embargo would somehow make Cuba the promised land is naive at best. The entrenched communists WANT the US embargo, as it is their scapegoat for why things are so crappy for most of the citizens.

From TFA:

A tally of sporadic reports from six of the eight eastern provinces affected indicated at least 900,000 people had evacuated, and former President Fidel Castro released a statement calling on Cubans to heed security measures to ensure no one dies. Cuba historically has successfully carried off massive evacuations before hurricanes, sparing countless lives.

I wonder how they do it?

(no snark)

2008-09-08 11:42:56 AM
I'll have to Listen to Radio Havana on my shortwave tonight. According to them they had ZERO deaths in Cuba because of their superior skill at handling hurricanes or some such. They did spend a lot of time mocking the deaths and damage in the U.S. however.

Tonight should be more of the same.

Mirtha Perez, a 65-year-old retiree, said hardly anyone was left in her nearby town of Salome.

"It's a huge evacuation," she said. "We are waiting and asking God to protect us and that nothing happens to us."

Dumbest shiat ever, this is the most embarrassing slap-fight we have ever been involved in.

We have to drop the embargo, re-open our embassy and cut out the inflammatory rhetoric. I would like to see Havana sometime before I die.

Um, where exactly does an indirect reference to a Country's lack of wealth equal "insensitivity to the suffering of good people?"

1. Because of the political system that has been in place in Cuba, have the majority of the Cuban people had to suffer from poverty for the last 35+ years? (answer: yes)

2. As a result of this economic hardship, do the people of Cuba, through no FAULT of their own, live in substantial housing, work their asses off in businesses to try and survive while making a fraction of what people in other countries make? (answer: yes)

3. Also as a result, will the "economic costs" resulting from Hurricane Ike be significantly less than they would be if the SAME amount of damage were suffered on the soil of the US or virtually any other industrialized non-third-world country? (answer: yes)

4. Is pointing out that the economic losses are a fraction of the "dollar amount" that they would be if they happened to the United States accurate? (answer: yes)

5. Did the submitter use exaggeration to make the point in a humorous way? (answer: yes)

6. (and this is a big one) Did the submitter include anything in the headline demeaning the Cuban peoples, or making light of their suffering, or expressing happiness over their current and pending misery? (answer: NO)

so STFU.

Cigar Afficiando had a series of articles about a year ago that examined various aspects of cuba including the embargo with people on both sides and their reasoning for their support/opposition.
