We just went and saw Tropic Thunder this afternoon. It was hilarious.

Our crappy little theater here is a 6-plex with about 80 seats per theater. We were waiting in the hallway when 4 other movies let out. Death Race had 1 person. Babylon AD had 8. Tropic Thunder had 4. Bangkok won with 20. Twenty whole people on a opening weekend matinée. Wow.

Obviously it's the hair.

This weekend is a fairly obvious movie hole. It's the weekend after Labor Day, all the summer popcorn flicks are old hat, and it's still a month or two before the winter movie blitz. It's just as much the stupid release calendar as crappy movies.

Hollywood needs to learn two lessons, not one.

Hollywood should somehow compensate me for the two hours of my life I lost when I saw Hamlet 2 last night.

We saw Tropic Thunder today as well. We loved it, and now a few of the jokes on TotalFark lately make more sense...

Ebert gave Death Race a half star. There is no such thing as a no star rating.

what makes a person actually pay to see Nicolas Cage? It's not the acting- he's been terrible in everything he's been in in the last five years, since Matchstick Men/ Adaptation. It can't be the films he's chosen, as those are universally terrible too.

It must be the pretty. People see Cage 'cause they need the pretty and he can always bring that.

Yes there is. Go check his Q&A, he just addressed his star ratings.

You mean the same weekend kids went back to school and some shows prepare their season finales?
Wow, I'm stumped as to why.

I thought Disaster Movie revolutionized worst box office [noun] of the year.

You need to watch more TV.
That thing was advertised every 10 minutes and Comedy Central even devoted a weekend to the star.

Freddie got Fingered and Slackers are two movies that stick out as having zero stars. I think One Night at McCool's as well.

The whole marquee for new movies looks like a big load of fail. I usually try to go to the theater at least once a week but nothing looks even remotely appealing. And I like Nicholas Cage. *ducks*

Still, the only thing on TV was the Republican National Convention. That's really saying something.

Cathedralmaster: ...Ebert gave Death Race a half star. There is no such thing as a no star rating.

There is, but they're rare. In his own words, zero star reviews cross the line into becoming "immoral" in some fashion. Wolf Creek was a prime example, though most of these reviews are far more hysterical (see Freddy Got Fingered).

I very much enjoyed Lord of War and his acting in the film. The Weatherman was decent, but forgetable. I sometimes wonder if he's an actor who needs a lot of direction - he can be fantastic in one performance and laughable the next.

I've been thinking of seeing Pineapple Express or The Dark Knight again this week. There's nothing at all coming out until the 12th, with Burn After Reading.

i loved freddie got fingered and bought it on dvd. i also thought tropic thunder owned pineapple express. use that opinion at your own risk.

Glad to see that Tropic Thunder is failing to make the money expected of it. If Jack Black is on the marquee I won't be in the theater. His only good acting job was the one episode of the X-Files he did. I'll take Nic Cage over that waste of flesh any day of the week and i despise Nic Cage!

So I hear the original was good. What would one theoretically search for on imdb to find out more?

Bit ti search torrents, just imdb, yeah that's it.

I agree completely with the Jack Black sentiments. However, robbing yourself of Robert Downey Jr's performance in Tropic Thunder on account of Jack Black is a HUGE mistake.

/seriously JB isn't even around as much as some of the other supporting characters

I saw "The House Bunny". Predictable Anna Faris comedy, not bad, funny in parts and decent eye candy.
Even Rumer Willis looked pretty good, when she jogs you can ignore her fivehead.

Well it just isn't very smart to release a movie on the weekend of the first full football schedule, a.k.a college all day saturday and pro all day sunday...

Plus there was football (already mentioned) and a tropic storm going up the East Coast so a lot of people (in the Mid Atlantic region anyway) stayed home Friday night-Saturday evening.

If it was Nicholas Cage as H. I. Mcdonough, the movie might have done better.

I am usually pretty easy on movies. I even managed to get a few chuckles watching Postal this weekend...but the commercials for Bangkok Dangerous just reached a new low. Just watching the horrible trailer all I could think is: these guys are not even trying anymore - just (to quote Henry Rollins) pissing on our brains. The pitch for that movie probably was along the lines of:

Movie Pitchman: "Ok, I have a new action movie for you"

Producer: "Let's hear it"

Movie Pitchman: "It stars Nick Cage"

Producer: "Go on"

Movie Pitchman: "He's in Bangkok and there is a ton of shooting"

Producer: "I like what I'm hearing...what's the clincher?"

Movie Pitchman: "Nick will have...wait for it...LONG hair"

Producer: "farkin BRILLIANT! I am in, where do I sign?"

*cough* Lord of War *cough*

I saw Bangkok Dangerous and it wasn't horrible, but no good either. I don't think Cage was the right guy for the lead. Whole host of guys could have been better - Dicaprio, Damon (although he already is famous for Bourne), Russell Crowe,Denzel, even Val Kilmer.

It's too bad "The Rocker" didn't come out this weekend. It could have made the top 10 Box Office, I bet.
