I will agree with a previous statement that the mainstream 80's sucked. All the sub-cultures were SO much better. Goth before Marylin Manson and Hot Topic came and wrecked it all, mods and skins...
And the music! Depeche Mode (Dave Gahan is the longest standing crush on anyone I have ever had), Skinny Puppy, Sisters of Mercy, XTC, I could go on for a long long time about the non-Phil Collins type music there was. Or cock rock for that matter.

The HELL you say!

The 80s gave us awesome movies.

So true. By coincidence, I just happen to be hosting an "80's Over-the-Top AWESOMEthon!" today.

On the list:

Megaforce
Mad Max 3, Beyond Thunderdome
Remo Williams, the Adventure Begins
Big Trouble in Little China
The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai: Across the 8th Dimension

Notable runners up: The Last Starfighter, Beastmaster, Krull, Flash Gordon, Tron

Pure fail.

The best things to come of the 80s were John Cusack, John Hughes and John McClane.

Most people pick the decade they "came of age" as their favorite for reasons of nostalgia. But not me. I was in high school and college in the 1970's and that decade sucked ass.

In the 1980's I was a young adult with a family and working a lot of hours so I wasn't so much into the music scene and didn't watch much
TV. But I did see a lot of movies.

It was latter on that I came to appreciate 1980's music and even some of the tv shows in reruns.

The eighties were great, people were a lot more optimistic, there was more comedy and fun things going on, it was better.

Popular culture didn't start to suck until about the mid 1990's.

Things have improved slightly in the last three years.

Halfmast Trousers: I was class of '85.

Never feathered my hair. Never owned acid-wash jeans. Never a mullet or "big hair." I don't recall that being the prevailing fashion, other than in music videos or among the same cheesy-type trendy people who now mouse their hair up in a stupid kind of mohawk.

I came here to say that. I knew just just a couple of people with mohawks. Now parachute pants on the other hand.....

80s fashion - horrific. Flourescent sweatshirts, anyone?

80s politics - unspeakable. Reagan, anyone?

80s music - excellent. My pick for the best music year of the decade? 1987, which saw the release of Document, The Joshua Tree, The Lion and the Cobra, and If I Should Fall from Grace with God.

80s film? Other than those already mentioned, there was Footloose, Flashdance, Girls Just Wanna Have Fun, and all the John Hughes movies.

/Finished middle school in 1987.

dillenger69: well ... if you can't pick the 90's, you'd better not pick the 70's or 60's. The 50's were just dorky ... and anything before that can't be "cool" since the word hadn't been used in that manner yet.

I still wouldn't call the 80s "cool" by any stretch.

How about we just call it "fun" instead?

I kinda like that "every other decade" theory mentioned in Dazed and Confused...

"The '50s were boring, the '60s rocked, and the '70s-- Oh, my god, they obviously suck. Come on. Maybe the '80s will be radical. You know? I figure we'll be in our 20s and, hey, it can't get any worse."

-Can't stand Spike Lee, but that was his one good movie.

2008-09-06 08:46:58 AM
Let's face it, most of the music sucked. John Bonham died, David Lee Roth left Van Halen and then everything pretty much sucked until 87 when Appetite for Destruction came out.

But the movies of the 80s are awesome. Ghostbusters, Lethal Weapon, Back to the Future, and so and and so on.

My guess is they interviewed a bunch of people in their 30s (like myself) for this. But folks lets face it. The 80's sucked big time. At least the pop culture music side of. Most popular 80's music was served up by untalented ass clowns. They forgot how to play a guitar, and they hadn't yet figured out the synth.

Now, early rap was decent. Whatever happened to that?

2008-09-06 08:48:17 AM
Boring music from a musicality standpoint. I've been bombarded in this sort of discussion before by Butt Rock apologists, claiming it was far from boring from a stage presence point of view. I'll give them that. There were many, many gimmicks.

Oh yes, the 1980s, - the era that continued hairy porn until the shaved themed crap took over in the 1990s. 1970s and 1980s ruled in that respect.

HowlingFrog: Glasgowsfinest: I guess it depends on your age, I was 13 in '85, so I was pretty much running with the kids, but I remember seeing some FAR OUT haircuts in the older kids. Think Kajagoogoo.

Yeah, I imagine you're right. I was 25 in '85, and the Kajagoogoo look was NOT in. Neither was Kajagoogoo, come to think of it. That was teeniebopper crap. In my age group it was more like Industrial and anarchy.
You heard more Rammstein than Culture Club, let's put it that way. :)

Class of '85 here. The 80s were a fashion, social, musical and political nightmare. Some of the bands you guys are mentioning were fun but for every cool, catchy song there were a million others you youngn's never heard which were godawful. And let us not forget the shadow of nuclear annihilation, which was very dark indeed.
