Ok, so is this product placement in the movie or just the requisite franchise band waggoning ? If well placed cans of that crap are in fact going to be in the film then its indeed a sad day...real men don't aspire to driving Ford Mondeos (Casino Royale) and drinking fizzy pop, they aspire to tearing around in beautiful Aston Martins, getting muellered on expensive cocktails and shagging exotic looking women...its all just too working class for me

Mugato: What's with all the product placement in these movies? It really started with the Brosnan ones...

Actually, if you can stomach it, go watch Moonraker again for the clumsiest (and first) example of this wretched phenomenon that I can recall noticing.

I think I was 10 or 11 years old, watching it on tv, when I asked my dad why every visible sign, beverage and logo was for 7-Up.

I can only see product placement becoming more and more important for movies - it might even be seen as one of the ways the industry is fighting back against piracy, as it gives them a way of indirectly recovering money from people that get to see their movie for free.

2008-09-03 11:08:52 AM
The only product placements in a Bond movie should be the Walther PPK and the Aston-Martin DB5.

That being said, one of my friends was raging that all the "Transformers" (the "good guys," anyway) were GM vehicles and it was "just a big commercial."

I think that one falls into the case cited above where if the items are some clearly fake brand it becomes MORE jarring. Like when you see characters on TV drinking "BEER" brand beer.

Same. That was the first time in my life I became aware of product placement. Later I would realize that Bond had been doing a lot of it, the filthy whore.

padraig: DjangoStonereaver: and then there's
the whole 'gay subtext' thing they're trying to push, but
whatever

Gay subtext, really? I've missed that.

I read some article (from Fark, of course) that because Daniel
Craig is popular with the gay community the producers are trying
to throw them a few bones (so to speak): hence the lingering
shots of his buff bod coming out of the surf and the rope and
chair torture scene (which is even more leg-cross-inducing than
the carpet beater scene from the novel if you ask me) where
he's buck nekkid.

The rumor is that he will kiss a guy (Felix Leiter) in the next
movie, but again this is probably something that is either
publicity whoring or a misunderstanding of something in the
script.

Nemo's Brother: The real reason why Deadwood, Carnivale and Rome were canceled is because HBO couldn't do any product placement in them.

Wow. You mean they spent millions producing these shows, and only after doing that realized they couldn't make product placements? Talk about a facepalm.

HBO Producer:

"Whaddya mean there's no current market for togas and short swords? Goddammit, if we had found out at the script stage that Rome's plot occurred 2000 years ago, think how much money we could have saved. Why wasn't I informed of this before we spent millions? I thought we were making a multi-million dollar multi-year series about assh*le sports talk show hosts."

Av8rLuvr: The producers choice for Daniel Craig as James Bond positively butchered the character, so this Coke Zero thing just sounds like it's par for the course.

Yes, after that masterful performance by Pierce Brosnan, we were all a little dissapointed. NOT.
Craig made the perfect bond after Connery (debatable IMHO). But Connery is a relic of the past. The only way Connery could work as bond: When the bad guys close in on him, he shiats himself, and then hobbles away as they reel back in disgust.

I never said Brosnan was a great Bond. Maybe I just can't get away from the Connery films. I thought he was awesome and haven't been impressed by any Bonds since.

I have to say though, your little scenario there is pretty funny.

Frankly, Daniel Craig's a great Bond. I liked him in Casino Royale (and he's the first Bond I've gone to see in theaters), and will probably like him in QOS.

Product placements are evil, but I don't see them going away. Also, I'd bet he'll drink Coke Zero during the day / out on a boat, instead of alcohol.

/never understood why any agent got drunk, if he expected to live.

I'm trying to keep an open mind about QUANTUM OF SOLACE (always one of my favorite Bond stories).

But the movie appears to have zero connection to the story. The story is about some rich lady telling Bond a story about other rich people buggering about. The movie poster has Bond sporting an enormous gun.

Am I misremembering something?

swaxhog: The worst was when he was driving the Ford Focus and checks his Sony Ericsson phone

The fact that Bond in his early days was driving a Ford Focus was more of a joke than product placement but everything else was pretty gratuitous. Bond has to drive some model of car and has to use some brand of cell phone service but there's no reason to focus in on it at every opportunity.

2008-09-03 05:17:12 PM
You wanna know why Coke Zero is such a flop? 'Cause there's no need for it. Diet Coke is one farkin' calorie. ONE! You burn that up breathing for 30 minutes.

If I want a zero calorie drink, I'll stick with water. Plus, it has the advantage of not tasting like malted battery acid.

It's not just Bond movies, it's everywhere now.

Look at Tropic Thunder... Wii, Tivo, ipod, etc. I almost walked out when Tom Cruise was reading a copy of Maxim and you could see him making sure the cover was perfectly visible as he laid it on his desk.

Or when Seth Rogan's teen girlfriend was watching UFC in the hotel room by herself in Pineapple Express.

Or when Tony Stark makes a big production out of getting a couple Whoppers at Burger King.

That kind of crap takes me right out of the movie.

Kaybeck: That kind of crap takes me right out of the movie.

So fictional characters portrayed to live in modern times in our world may, from time to time, use non-fictional products. Big farkin' deal.

You're okay with the concept of a secret agent living through numerous gunfights, insurmountable odds, and saving the world from global domination multiple times with his incredible timing, gadgetry, and marksmanship, but the second someone mentions the name of his watch, THAT takes you right out of the movie? LOL!

Actually product placement was in the Bond movies from the beginning. there wasn't a drink called a vodka martini until the Dr. No movie (and the product placement).
