(Bloomberg View)   Drudge gets 20 million page views per day, beating the NY Times and most other news sites. Which is the same amount of views Fark gets per day when matching his absurd auto-refresh rate   (thestandard.com ) divider line

Drudge is a news site? It's a gossip site with an accuracy level barely reaching the Weekly World News.

But still better than CNN.

I'd disagree but I'd be lying.

If they use auto-refresh shouldn't these numbers not count?

Drew went over this in his book.

I do find the Drudge autorefresh absurd, but what really pisses me off about it is that it doesn't actually refresh...you know, show the new content. Not for me anyway (Firefox). I mean, the page does "jump" so it looks like a refresh but new content doesn't seem to show until I manually refresh it.

Forbes has a top 10 list of why this is good news for online media. It takes 10 clicks to view it.

I want to think CNN is better than Drudge, but I can't.

Does anyone really care about pageviews? Aren't the real metrics visits and unique visitors?

You never hear Drudge talk about that though.

I'm sure those numbers are decent too, although probably not as impressive.

I'm going to go hit F5 at zombo.com until it's the most widely read news site on the internet.

Anything is possible at zombo.com

Sure, but can Drudge post 2,995 Sarah Palin greenlites in under a week?

Nope.

Page views is not an accurate indicator of traffic volume. You need to use unique IPs. All stat services (even from the hosting provider) will give this info.

Also, anyone that thinks Drudge is a news site needs to get punched in the box.

2008-09-02 06:20:58 PM
The refresh rate on Drudge is only once every 3-4 minutes or so. And almost all of the content is just links to other news sources. The rabid far left needs something to grasp at.

2008-09-02 06:21:05 PM
Yeah but Drudge is willing to suck cock.

Drudge is just a new aggregator -- you know, a site that provides links to the real news articles elsewhere. But without the Florida tag.

He is using google-analytics to track numbers so he has to be following their rules for impression counts and doubleclick to serve.

Drudge does a good job of ferreting out news, which is why I visit it frequently each day. It has an extreme right wing bias, but Drudge also has a knack for featuring interesting stories that aren't obvious elsewhere.

Of course, Fark is much better than the Drudge Report. Can't beat Fark's Photoshop contests!

The vast majority of the articles on Fark are accurate. Comments...perhaps not. But the news being provided is.

Hell, Free Republic and Democratic Underground are more reliable than Drudge, and typing that makes me feel dirty.

dletter: Does anyone really care about pageviews? Aren't the real metrics visits and unique visitors?

There are so many metrics people follow. Click-thru rate, page-views-per-visitor, visit-length. The only one that matters is ROI. If you're making money on your pay-per-impression, who cares if he's lying.

2008-09-02 06:27:55 PM
If only Drudge allowed users to comment on stories, instead of having refresh as the only feature on the site.

Drudge definitely does refresh:
var timer = setInterval("autoRefresh()", 1000 * 60 * 3);
function autoRefresh(){self.location.reload(true);}

Our old firewalls had a hell of a time with that site and the auto-refresh, because the remote HTTP server was broken in several different ways. For example, Drudge ignores the client's "If-Modified-Since" header in the refresh request, so every 3 minutes the entire main page is downloaded, even if there is change.

I laugh evry time I see people saying Drudge isn't a news site. No shiat. Drudge isn't gathering the news, it's linking you to the news. Kinda like a rather popular website we all know of.

Psumek: It's nice to see he's #6, but why is weatherunderground.com on there? Are there a lot of CHUD who use the interwebs?

I think it's because when you Google the word "weather" and a city (new window), weatherunderground is usually the first hit.

My Mom is a right wing fundie and use to love the Drudge site. Then she realized how much adware you get from the site when I built her a new PC. She doesn't go to Matt's site anymore.

"Page views is not an accurate indicator of traffic volume. "

I guess every other site on the internet that uses them as their metric is completely wrong, and I guess that's why it's one of the standards for internet advertising - because it's not accurate.

You keep being cool, quoting your number of unique IP visits per day, the rest of the world will catch up with you eventually.

"Aren't the real metrics visits and unique visitors?"

There are many different ways of analysing a site's traffic, it depends on the site itself, a crap may get 1000 visitors who view one page and bounce, or a good site may get 100 visitors who view 10 pages each. As someone mentioned above the RoI is the important figure, but ads are usually sold by pageviews.

I'm guessing you didn't really read the article, Drudge said "HE PAGE LOADED 614,577,960 TIMES WITH 14,163,025 UNIQUES"

I'm not anti-drudge. It's actually my 2nd most viewed page after Fark. Good source for news.

I read Fark. Therefore, I don't read the news.

Weather Underground is probably there because there's been a lot of interest in weather lately with Gustav. I know I visited wunderground.com/tropical/ every 3 hours for the advisory updates.

"Unique visits" is the metric that site operators study internally to gauge the true reach of their content.

"Pageviews" is the metric that site operators present to advertisers who don't know any better. The larger the number is, the more impressive it seems.

2008-09-02 07:22:14 PM
I can't figure out why Fox News is so far down the list. I guess people prefer biased, liberal media.

No. That would be "hits" . Advertisers aren't stupid in most cases. Pageviews and visitors would be a good indicator of the quality of content and if their advertisements were focused there would be a good RoI thus enabling you to charge more per page view.

2008-09-02 07:27:28 PM
Fark sounds bitter that Drudge is getting all the press for high page views.
